The reason leg picks are removed is because the game was getting boring with all these wrestlers and BJJ guys coming in and going for single and double leg take downs. There were no big throws, no technique - it went back to high school wrestling. - nothing to do with Russians.

@TheMythTheMagic Your logic is flawed. Look at the origins of Sombo. MANY techniques were scrapped. Your next question should be "WHY?" Stop and think: Who are you more afraid of? The man who has done 1000 throws once? Or the man who has done one throw 1000 times? If a technique is quite difficult, or has limited applications, then scrap it and move on to one which possess more uses in a broader range of applications.

I may be misunderstanding your comment. but basically if the number of possible attacks on a Judoka decreases by decreasing the number of attacks that are legal then in a real situation Judoka may not have the reflex to defend these illegal attacks. In BJJ schools you tell them your a judoka and they'll try and heel hook or knee bar you because they know you don't practice it. I mean its getting to the point where you'll be able to a wider variety of throws in BJJ tournis than Judo ones.

Most of the people that I trained with went the way of sambo and BJJ because of what you just stated. We all wanted to fight a more "pure" style then MMA, and because we all liked judo, but the constant onslought of rule changes were just too much. By the way.... love the heel hook!

Van der walle and rhadi thrived on pickups and leg grabs etc and I'm sure their opponents had to learn to defend them to be succesful. they don't have to as much anymore. There is no such thing as perfect technique. In the begging there was no technique at all, and then the people who were successful taught their stuff.

The top echelon of coaches MAKE the techniques up, but it is different for every individual/body type.

All of the athletes in this video are highly technical but upper level wrestling/judo is sloppy; it's a scramble; a fight. This is the real world, not the hypothetical practice arena. If you want finesse throws, watch at the high school level.

"Sambo" is what the Soviats renamed Judo after a certain political malice against Japan... since they pretty much changed the style and added a huge amount of russian wrestling they felt it was in their right to change the name... though Sambo was developed by a certain Judoka (his name escapes me) and when the it was finished they killed him off... Russian Judo actually kicked major ass for the first few years it was introduced but then the Japanese caught on and countered it.

Why is everyone bagging Russian judo? Granted, I feel that generally Russian Judokas' tend not to be as 'graceful' as most, but that is just because most Russian Judokas' have trained in sambo and wrestling. Of course if you have trained in other styles of wrestling, it will influence you in what attacks you utilize. In addition, there is nothing wrong with being a physically stronger and more 'muscley' judoka. A stronger judoka is a better judoka. Period!
