its just rock n roll band shit man, anyone who has EVER been in a band with TWO guitarists will know that this shit goes on ALL the time! lol, long live rock n roll!!
The odd part to this is that the British lads cracked open the music industry and gave old Chuck a new voice in 1963/1964. He would be an interesting curio if it were not for the British Invasion, a small fry lost in some old club in the sticks.. as he was finished by 1959... just 5 years with only 4 number 1 US Hits. see wiki/Chuck_Berry_discography
@jnrolf likewise to the british invasion. they'd be a floating turd, in the north atlantic, if it were not for the guys that wrote the blues tunes that the british lads copied.

@jroxx11211 I'm a musician too, but I also have a life. Why bother getting involved on here when you could collaborate with other musicians in real life? Don't tell me that you don't live near 1000 different musicians, because you do and you could be jamming with them and having a social life instead of living on facebook and youtube, or playing music as a hobby and doing something much more beneficial for society as a career, like being an engineer, which is easy if you eat healthy and study,

Face it, Chuck Berry has always been a first class asshole. Keith plays Berry`s songs better than Chuck does. Why Richards took on this challenge is beyond me....
@whyyeseyec Because there would be no keith richards without chuck berry, keith has said so, chuck is his idol, he was his number 1 influence in playing the guitar, this was a labor of love for keith, he did this out of respect for his talent, he begged chuck for the chance to be the musical director of this movie, chuck has been doing this for going on 60 years, hes allowed to be whatever he wants!!!!!
@jroxx11211 : I stick by what I said. On Chuck Berry`s best day he couldn`t hold a candle to Keith Richards on his worst day. Every song Berry wrote sounds just like the last one. Same riff different day. That`s all he could play. That riff. Richards could replicate everything Berry did. Berry couldn`t come close to playing Midnight Rambler, Tumblin` Dice or Honky Tonk Woman.....
@whyyeseyec c'mon dude, its apples n oranges, chuck is a pioneer, he came up with a style nobody had ever heard, keith took that n progressed it to another level, i give keith all his props, hes a phenominal talent in his own right, but chuck did it before anybody else did, there wasnt anyone he could copy from, give him his due, he invented rock n roll guitar, like jerry lee lewis invented R&R piano, they were breaking new ground with every song, its not easy inventing a new style of music.
@jroxx11211 : Look, I`ll give you that. Kudos to Berry for coming up with that riff. He was the first with that `sound` and yes, everyone immediately copied it. But that `s all he ever did. Every song had that same riff and he never progressed. His career lasted for 2-3 yrs then he was just repeating himself like the Beach Boys. Play the same 10 songs for 40 years. Do you realized in the 60`s the Beatles were putting out an album every 3-4 months?! Mick and Keith wrote new stuff constantly.....
@whyyeseyec yes, your right, he kinda stalled, but boy he sure had his niche', and if he had someone to collaborate with, like, keith had brian jones, mick taylor, and ron wood, page had plant, of course the greatest songwriting team in history, lennon n mccartney, who knows how much better he could have gotten, most of the best ones, it was a group effort, i know chuck probably was an asshole as a person, but for a black man in the fifties to do what he did was amazing, im sure it wasnt easy!
@jroxx11211 : Funny thing about Lennon & McCartney. Most of their songs writing efforts together stopped after 1964. Once they came into international success and had their own homes they wrote separately. Same with Jagger/Richards. Except for adding an occasional word or phrase to each others songs they worked apart....
@whyyeseyec im sure even though they wrote seperately they still influenced each other, they had the same musical backgrounds and were still like brothers, even brothers fight n argue but love each other, there were alot of other people around them musically, slowly pushing them in different directions, yoko was influencing john, paul wanted to do solo projects, eventually wings, as far as jagger n richards, however they did it, it lasted going on 50 years, it obviously worked pretty well.
keith was trying to do something with this tune, but chuck's songs always sounds the same and he seems to don't like changing them. keith is better in my opinion
Read Keith's book to find out what it was REALLY like working with Chuck Berry! Unfortunately meeting your heroes isn't always as good as you hoped. But, to give Berry credit, when Rolling Stone mag was telling him that he invented rock and roll, he was (wisely) very modest and pointed out that was one of many. Every sincere musician knows just how much he has borrowed and learnt from those who went before.
Hail Hail, the King iz inna House! Keef has a shit load of ballz giving cues to Mr Berry. And as for you nerd choirboy hypocrites that are down on Chuck for his past "cinematic" transgressions, well, you all are full o' shit porno fiends...He never did anything that a curious child wouldn't have done.... HA! Got YA! Busting your uptight stones...
@KingKook I really don't have porn in my possesion.Really have not since my older brother got penthouse in the 70,71,72 time frame.I'm too cheap,do not like the idea of spending time on pics of girls I will never get or films where every title should be "Stuff that never happens to you". Anyway what CB did was film women without their consent.Playboy/Penthouse gets consent/models know they're being photographed.IF THIS Happens to your daughter, wife, mother, etc by CB would you say 'Cool"?
@skillzdatkillz900 lol too, basicallly every original musician has got only two songs, a fast one and a slow one. Not only this, basically every master painter has only two pictures, a dark one and a colourful. Not only that, basically every original poet has got only two poems, the one with the rhyme in and the one with the rhyme out. So I really can`t see what´s the big news on that...
@ElizR56 Well lez i feel regardless of how good of a muscian u are....violations(in the 100's) of privacy by rigging a video recorder to the women's toilet ....in your place of business could get ya killed by certain hubby's, boyfriends, Daddy's,etc. Now if you want chuck to watch ya go to the bathroom he has a website and u may be able to play music with him afterwards.Good Luck.
@midsizedwhiteboy Yea, but who knows how much sick shit the stones pulled in their heyday, especially drunk n stoned mick n keith, they make chuck look like a choir boy, there would be no stones without chuck berry, keith has said so, chuck invented rock n roll guitar, hes a pioneer and a rock n roll and guitar GOD!!!!
@andrewr62 better person? yeah..he basically hurt his wife( anita also a user...introduced him to herion),kids and may have left other bandmates carry more of a musical load. But his drug use hurt himself, his finances and those dependent on him.Berry violated a lot of folks(women) right to privacy by rigging camera in a ladies bathroom. What if your daughter, wife, mother, etc was photographed unknowingly?I'm not as big a Keef fan as I am of Mick Taylor.

Chuck was kind of an ass... he would show up at gig's with out of key guitars, change keys mid song, and sometimes just mash other songs all together. So here he his having keith play the same riff like a dozen times as though it's really any different than any of his other songs. And I like chuck Berry A LOT more than the stones...
@whiteej21 Agreed. Chuck was a weird guy sometime. His live performances sucked, & he was temperamental as heck. Chuck was just resentful for taking direction from Keith (& because Keith was so much more successful, & lifting Chuck's licks) so he turns around & tries to bust his balls over trivialities just to show him who's boss. Thank God for Keith helping Chuck''s career with "Hail, Hail Rock n Roll"" anyway.
He put up with Chuck, and made a great critically acclaimed tribute movie to him.
I lost all my respect for Berry after his treatment of Kieth....it was disrespectful and just plain daft. The Stones were far bigger then Berry, I have seen them both.
Chuck is Keith's musical father... If it were not for Chuck Berry and those old Black men that created blues and rock and roll there would be no Rolling Stones. Chuck was making sure Keith properly respected his musical Godfather!
@esl63 keith is all confused, chuck dont need anybody tellin him how to play his songs, hes been playin them for 50 years, just stand back n watch chuck do it, then throw in some leads!!!!
*come GODO*
ahahahahaha ^^ ciao a tutti! xo' alla fine pare che gliela fa, va là!
@whiteej21 People play incorrectly by ear all the time. It takes skill to be able to play by ear and still faithfully duplicate a given riff or whatever. Tell me you've never run across someone who couldn't read music (or wasn't reading a chart in a given case) and thinks he's picked off a lick, run or whatever, and in fact he's got it wrong. Far from being impossible, it's sadly common and we've probably all been guilty.
@whiteej21 There's no dispute about what happens in band practice. The fact is that one can play by ear and play badly either because of poorly hearing what's played or lacking the technical knowledge or dexterity to duplicate it. Have you taken a look at MyTwangyGuitar's videos? The guy knows what he's talking about in spades. Show a little respect.
@whiteej21 What MyTwangyGuitar said made perfect sense: if you can hear it right, you can play it right. That's what being able to play by ear means. If a master like Keith Richards can be humble in the presence of Chuck Berry, then you ought to be doubly humble toward MyTwangyGuitar, as he is a master of what he's talking about — as a glance at his video portfolio will show.
i've been in band but a so called pro like keith should've had this shit down before he got there hell he is older than berry, not really, but come on he played this stuff before why is it so hard to do now
chuck's not a cunt..ive explained a intro to a bloke of mine, and he just coudlnt get it right..so you have to interrupt him early, otherwise the wrong goes into his head..chuck didnt do this because of his ego, he did it because keith wanted to play it right
So Chuck is being too hard on Keith because he wanted the intro to be right? Yeah, Chuck interrupted Keith a few times because guess what... Keith played it wrong a few times! It sounds much hipper the way Chuck wanted it to be played - with the strings already bent at the start of the slur and starting on the "and" of one! Kieth continually played it starting on the one, and starting with the strings unbent, which was what Chuck was telling him not to do! It's just a rehearsal, people!
I sort of agree with this statement...but it's more than that. He's found his internal 'song', his "voice" if you wil....l and that sound beit the beat, the riffing, the tone etc. are all part of the uniqueness of the Chuck berry sound...No matter what he plays, he sounds like 'Chuck Berry' and he'll never be anybody else. And if you stop and think about it, that sound had probably a bigger influece on rock and roll than any other sound...
When it comes to creating and inventing new riffs and new sounds Berry is in high school , and Richards has a Masters in nuclear physics. I like Chuck but he never really evolved where Richards constantly evolving musically.
Maybe take off the bandanna, cut off some drugs use, practice some more and cut those bullshit showmanship will help him keep up with those black dudes.
@CroissantOrange Chuck Berry was notoriously difficult and stubborn and Keith Richards had kicked his heroin and cocaine habits by this time, Keith was speaking a lot of sense trying to keep Chuck looking and sounding good in the song and the movie they were in. This kinda stuff is the usual bullshit everyone does and puts up with in a band.
@CroissantOrange Yeah, cuz we certainly can't remember any black dude who wore a bandana, took drugs employed over-the-top showmanship whilst playing a Fender guitar oh wait...
I think what we're seeing is two guys "busting each others' chops." Berry, a notorious non-perfectionist when it came to things musical, is giving Keith a taste of his own medicine as Keith had been having to lean heavily on CB just to get a decent guitar sound out of him, and pissed him off in the process. Anybody who thinks Keith can't handle the "Carol" guitar riff need only listen to the Stone's recorded version, which tears Chuck Berry a new one.
Of course Chuck is a perfectionist, but at the same time he wanted to learn Keith a thing or two about playing his licks right. The 'server' still has to serve the master, right?
@easypiecy2001 Nothing. It's his music, and he want's it right. This is not a collaboration. Reverse it and have him play a Stones song, then Richards will be boss.
I was at the show. Keith was brought onboard as the musical director. His job is to rehearse the band and call the shots. If Chuck needed to be rehearsed it would only make sense that Keith would have the last say. Just because Keith had trouble copping Chuck's lick doesn't disqualify him from rehearsing the band. As director he had full right to call every shot. That being said, it is only a matter of fact that Chuck would revert to whatever he was playing prior to working with Keith.
Chuck is one of the founders of Rock and Roll, but he is also insecure concerning his musical abilities. He spent decades playing with musicians who wouldn't challenge him. He's like a petulant, spoiled teen not used to being told how to play, so he gives Keith a little of "his own medicine". Keith's attempts to integrate Chuck into a great band amount to very little, as Chuck ignores the agreed upon arrangements once the concert begins. Thankfully, Keith carries his ass during the entire gig.
Not really a big fan of chuck. He let being a star get to his head. Keith is a great guitar player actually even better that chuck. I have heard that chuck was really hard to play with because he had to have everything exactly right everytime.
@Andreas748 i suspect keith would know better than to try to tell chuck what to do. according to him he actually brought a bullet to bite on when working with chuck, to keep things going and his own ego in check. chuck is playing oneupman on this, and well he has the right to, but who's the bigger person?
I'm so jealous of Steve Jordan (The drummer), he actually plays with John Mayer Trio...
Ohkthxbye 3 days ago
Wow, Keith gets schooled by daddy. A thrill for Keith I'm sure. . . after the bruises to his ego healed up.

@whyyeseyec yes, your right, he kinda stalled, but boy he sure had his niche', and if he had someone to collaborate with, like, keith had brian jones, mick taylor, and ron wood, page had plant, of course the greatest songwriting team in history, lennon n mccartney, who knows how much better he could have gotten, most of the best ones, it was a group effort, i know chuck probably was an asshole as a person, but for a black man in the fifties to do what he did was amazing, im sure it wasnt easy!
jroxx11211 5 months ago
@jroxx11211 : Funny thing about Lennon & McCartney. Most of their songs writing efforts together stopped after 1964. Once they came into international success and had their own homes they wrote separately. Same with Jagger/Richards. Except for adding an occasional word or phrase to each others songs they worked apart....
whyyeseyec 5 months ago
@whyyeseyec im sure even though they wrote seperately they still influenced each other, they had the same musical backgrounds and were still like brothers, even brothers fight n argue but love each other, there were alot of other people around them musically, slowly pushing them in different directions, yoko was influencing john, paul wanted to do solo projects, eventually wings, as far as jagger n richards, however they did it, it lasted going on 50 years, it obviously worked pretty well.

Chuck was kind of an ass... he would show up at gig's with out of key guitars, change keys mid song, and sometimes just mash other songs all together. So here he his having keith play the same riff like a dozen times as though it's really any different than any of his other songs. And I like chuck Berry A LOT more than the stones...
lcmtvbreath4 7 months ago
I think Chuck is a little resentful and of course Keith ripped Chuck but Chuck ripped T Bone Walker.
thebonkersjupiter 7 months ago
@whiteej21 Agreed. Chuck was a weird guy sometime. His live performances sucked, & he was temperamental as heck. Chuck was just resentful for taking direction from Keith (& because Keith was so much more successful, & lifting Chuck's licks) so he turns around & tries to bust his balls over trivialities just to show him who's boss. Thank God for Keith helping Chuck''s career with "Hail, Hail Rock n Roll"" anyway.
He put up with Chuck, and made a great critically acclaimed tribute movie to him.

ChopJoplGershw 8 months ago
@whiteej21 There's no dispute about what happens in band practice. The fact is that one can play by ear and play badly either because of poorly hearing what's played or lacking the technical knowledge or dexterity to duplicate it. Have you taken a look at MyTwangyGuitar's videos? The guy knows what he's talking about in spades. Show a little respect.
ChopJoplGershw 8 months ago
chuck telling the best blues player alive how to play.... friggin funny !!!!
timjessa1 8 months ago
@whiteej21 What MyTwangyGuitar said made perfect sense: if you can hear it right, you can play it right. That's what being able to play by ear means. If a master like Keith Richards can be humble in the presence of Chuck Berry, then you ought to be doubly humble toward MyTwangyGuitar, as he is a master of what he's talking about — as a glance at his video portfolio will show.

CroissantOrange 9 months ago
@CroissantOrange Chuck Berry was notoriously difficult and stubborn and Keith Richards had kicked his heroin and cocaine habits by this time, Keith was speaking a lot of sense trying to keep Chuck looking and sounding good in the song and the movie they were in. This kinda stuff is the usual bullshit everyone does and puts up with in a band.

I feel for Keith, but I have to admit, it sounds way better when Chuck plays the riff. I wonder why Keith struggled with it? It's not hard.
ProfessorBunglesmith 10 months ago
I was at the show. Keith was brought onboard as the musical director. His job is to rehearse the band and call the shots. If Chuck needed to be rehearsed it would only make sense that Keith would have the last say. Just because Keith had trouble copping Chuck's lick doesn't disqualify him from rehearsing the band. As director he had full right to call every shot. That being said, it is only a matter of fact that Chuck would revert to whatever he was playing prior to working with Keith.

oneswatter 10 months ago
Chuck is one of the founders of Rock and Roll, but he is also insecure concerning his musical abilities. He spent decades playing with musicians who wouldn't challenge him. He's like a petulant, spoiled teen not used to being told how to play, so he gives Keith a little of "his own medicine". Keith's attempts to integrate Chuck into a great band amount to very little, as Chuck ignores the agreed upon arrangements once the concert begins. Thankfully, Keith carries his ass during the entire gig.
