The same people were starting to organize and were complaining long before they heard of Obama. It only reached the boiling point when Bush started the bailout scams. By that time Obama was a contender for the Dem Nomination, but the movement had nothing to do with him specifically or race at all.

The same people were starting to organize and were complaining long before they heard of Obama. It only reached the boiling point when Bush started the bailout scams. By that time Obama was a contender for the Dem Nomination, but the movement had nothing to do with him specifically or race at all.

What was the difference? in 1957 credit would have gone to Republican Pres Eisenhower who originally demanded its passage. First of all, I'm not white, and I supported Barack Obama in his presidential election campaign. Yes, there are racists who hate Obama because he's half-black (maybe Joe Wilson is, I don't know), but they are VERY FEW. How many people do you see bashing Obama because he's black? You see anyone on CNN that says we shouldn't have a black president? Would it have been any different if John Edwards was trying to create national health care? Even the White House rejected Carter's statement.

I don't think the outburst was racially motivated. But I can understand why Carter said what he did, because he grew up in Plains, Georgia. He is working from a different context and probably the outburst calls to mind similar behavior he ran into in the past, and that was, perhaps, racially motivated.

I don't agree with Carter on this it's not about race. I'm a moderate democrat and I even disagree with some of Obama's decisions. Healthcare, as much as it needs to be reformed, should not be the administration's main foucus. Stabalizing the budget, paying of the deficit, putting people back to work, and coming up with an exit strategy in Iraq and Afganistan should be the main foucus. The previus Bush/Cheney administration didn't do anything about it and look where we're at because of it.

I don't understand how this is construed as "Wilson's outburst" :Based on Racism". It seems like two separate topics. Crazy people are being allowed (and in certain cases, encouraged) at these rallies which is not just an out burst of policy difference... He speakes about civil discourse in our system of law and then says Joe Wilson was reprimanded. Sounds like he is stating that he shouldn't be propped up as a "Hero". Not that his comments were based on racism. It's puzzling.

I find it telling that the people closest to the president, the secret service, hated this man. They said he was mean unfriendly felt like he was above everyone and basically a liar that would go to the oval office at 5 AM to make the American people think he was working, only to go back to sleep until 10 or 11. Wow, the dialog here is stunningly intelligent. I was expecting to see ridiculous slurs and cheap insults, but instead I found a vigorous debate in coherent sentences.
That being said, I tend to agree with Carter. The modern Republican Party formed in the late '60s when Southern Democrats like Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond switched their party affiliation in reaction to federal Democratic support for civil rights.
In many ways, it was racism that brought the Republican Party together in 1968.

The Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, when the South was still exclusively Democratic. It wasn't until 1968 that Southern Democrats began leaving the party to regester as Republicans.
I'm not a Republican or a Democrat, but I am a historian. I make it my business to tell the truth.

This isn't the place for an indepth debate, but I'm very interested in your responses. I haven't read the Shafer and Johnston paper, so clearly you have more information than me. I'm interested in seeing an interpretation of the time period that uses a class analysis.
I will say this with certainty: the Southern politicians who switched party affiliation after Nixon's election in 1968 were motivated by opposition to civil rights.

According to Johnston and Shafer, working-class white voters in the South continued to vote for Democrats for national office until the 1990s. In summary, Shafer told The New York Times, "[whites] voted by their economic preferences, not racial preferences". It doesn't make any sense for racist to join the republican party who's very existence was created for civil rights for blacks.
