just received my (3) Sima Quickonnect from Adorama for 12.81 each. Wish I had seen this before for 8.57. always my story. Buy and then will see cheaper. May buy a couple more at this price. Thanks
Dear Frugaldude. I always enjoy your shows. So much, in fact that I'm gonna watch 127 hrs to see you. Funny you annotated "annotation" but not the table dolly - seemed like something I would do (grin). Anyway, wanted to tell you I picked up a 750 watt - 2 outlet - inverter at K mart last week for $69 - not a bad deal. Also, please note that CFLs draw roughly twice the watts when first igniting. Thanks for the video - keep 'em coming! Have a great week!
The Kodak Zi8 is an OK "cheap" camera if it's going to be locked off in good light. Any movement and it starts to look ugly. I use it as my Camera B if there is a possibility of the camera getting destroyed. I also just picked up a Sony HX9V. Retail is well out of your set price range, but you can find them on eBay for $200-300. That may be out of the poster's price range, but it does 1080 at 60p, steadicam like stabilization and 16x zoom. It is now my "always with me" camera.
your shows are so very helpful. I have yet to build anything, but have used clamp lights. I find it tough to look good under them though. So I purchased a really cheap soft box kit. My camera is the Kodak Zi8 (picked up for $150). Definitely needs good lighting.
The Xactis are getting hard to find. Panasonic bought Sanyo, and has recently made a pistol grip model under the Panasonic HXDC1 and HXDC10. The DC1 can be found for around 200 bucks. They are great cameras. You might also go with a Canon HS300 point and shoot. It shoots 1080p video with a 5x zoom, and it is about the size of a deck of cards.
Bought and put together a PVC stabilizer this weekend. They had the plugs at my local Lowes. Made sure to grab like 15 of them. Good luck finding them everybody.
hey guys I'm making a short action film with fake guns and fake cigarets and stuff do I need to make a disclaimer on my vid will I get it trouble by law or youtube????
I just need to get this out. This is seriously the most helpful 'filming how-to' video series i have subscribed to on YouTube. The amount of links and tips is just, wow. thanks!
I went a little above my intended budget, and spent $400 on a refurbished Canon Xixia M40 from eBay (linked). Haven't received it yet, but everything I've seen from it looks like it'll be great for what I want to do with it. I'll want to upgrade to a better camera in the future, but this should hopefully do for now.
I've actually just finished up the $5 camera stabilizer, and it looks great. About to add my hockey tape and grips to it to top it off. Thanks for your vids!
I've used a Kodak Playsport Zx5; I found it through google shopping for ~$100usd. It shoots in 1080p at 30fps, and 720p at 60fps. and you can get magnetically attachable fish eye, wide angle and macro lenses. It doesn't have too many settings, and can't take external hardware.
Check out "A quick lap with Phil Kmetz" on my page. That was shot with said camera.

Eventually once I get into filming a little more I'll get something more, but for now. I'm happy with it.
This is the camcorder I got on Amazon, Toshiba Camileo X100 Full-HD Camcorder. I paid $172.11 for a $400.00 camera, as right now it is still that price.
Inexpensive 100-200 range, I'd suggest a gopro. The versatility for the low price is hard to beat, if you can overlook the shortcomings. (such as lack of view screen, mediocre mic etc).
1/2 inch pvc was easy for me to find. I just went to Home Depot and they had an entire isle of pvc. I also went to an ACE warehouse and they had the same. Any store that sells plumbing supplies will have 1/2 inch pvc as well.
sanyo is perfect for entry level camera :) i personally invested three times more money into learning how to use the camera, video, design courses and similar stuff.
I don't know what you think of pocket camcorders but I use a Kodak Playtouch and just picked up a used Kodak Playsport($30)..The Playtouch was on sale for just over $100 Canadian and is a decent little camera with an external mic port not many bells and whistles though but gets the job done.
Damn hate buying pvc in Britain. Pipes arnt too expensive but 2 pound for a tee joint is awful. Im resorting to investing in a heat gun to bend the pipes.
I found the 1/2" PVC plugs at my local Home Depot, no problem!!! The ones at my HD are not faceted like a nut on top like yours, just a circle. It works great and adding a rubber washer on top makes it look kinda pro!
Not sure why everyone is having a hard time finding these. Saw them at both Home Depot and Lowes here in Colorado!!
thanks for you help im gonns try 800watt potable generator

U can also add some glue or all purpose cement to the threads of the screw once the nut is in place so that it does not back off on the dolly wheels
