When I referred to mixed martial artists as generalist I meant that they are forced to look at the big picture. In order to excel in MMA they have to take in account a wide variety things such as strikes, takedowns, submissions, etc..... and can't devote themselves to just one discipline while in a MMA fight. that why i refer to them as generalists and not specialists

As for Anderson Silva, this is a man who drastically cuts weight for his bouts, up to 30 pounds. He goes into his 185 pounds bouts above 205. If Silva were to fight at his natural weight, it would be heavyweight like Fedor -- who never cuts or gains weight, and has never fought anywhere but 230 to 235 his entire career, yet he he has consistently defeated numerous taller and heavier opponents. He is almost never the larger opponent. THESE are the sorts of things that make him P4P best.
He has always taken the game to the person in whatever is supposed to be their strongest forte. One of the top Jiu-Jitsu practitioners -- does Fedor try to stand with him? No. He goes to the ground and proceeds to pound the living shit out of him for 50 minutes over 3 fights, complete dominance. Arlovski is great at stand-up? So he doesn't take it to the ground and knocks him out. etc. etc. etc. Try actually WATCHING Fedor's career if you want to know why he's the best P4P fighter in the world.

You shouldn't base your opinion toward MMA fighters on one fight between two people. There are some great MMA fighters who box very well and come from boxing background. You should judge on a case by case basis. In this case Tim Silva sucks at boxing and Ray Mercer is a good boxer.
It doesn't work that way. A boxer is so good at punching, because that is what they practise day in and day out. The stand-up game in MMA is far more complex, it involves leg-kicks, body-kicks, head-kicks, push-kicks, Muay Thai behind-the-head clinch and so on -- as well as the punching. A boxer can't use a boxing stance, or their legs will be destroyed and they won't have any spring in their step at all.
In this bout, Tim was stupid to stand & box, he should have done leg kicks then ground.
Big mistake for Tim Sylvia. No MMA fighter can fight a standup fight against a boxer. Boxers are trained for stand up bouts. Even an old boxer beat Tim because a boxer simply has greater stand up skills. A boxer will always beat an MMA fighter on their feet.

If boxers fought with the traditional angled boxing stance in an MMA fight, their legs would be mashed potatoes. The reason you don't like MMA striking is because you have to adjust your stance to deal with leg kicks and the like (against a good fighter - the dude above hasn't been for years).
Fedor is fighting Brett Rogers who is 5th at heavyweight Lesnars fighting Shane Carwin who's ranked 9th so I think we all know who's fighting the nobody.

What Im trying to say in reference to Video is that a MMA fighters punches are no were near on the same level as a boxers punches because thats what boxer specialize in. Boxing fans fail to realize that there is more to MMA then punching and they are quick to criticize a MMA fighters fighters punching skills. When I referred to mixed martial artists as generalist I meant that they are forced to look at the big picture. In order to excel in MMA they have to take in account a wide variety things such as strikes, takedowns, submissions, etc..... and can't devote themselves to just one discipline while in a MMA fight. that why i refer to them as generalists and not specialists

As for Anderson Silva, this is a man who drastically cuts weight for his bouts, up to 30 pounds. He goes into his 185 pounds bouts above 205. If Silva were to fight at his natural weight, it would be heavyweight like Fedor -- who never cuts or gains weight, and has never fought anywhere but 230 to 235 his entire career, yet he he has consistently defeated numerous taller and heavier opponents. He is almost never the larger opponent. THESE are the sorts of things that make him P4P best.

It has very little to do with records. Try watching Emelyanenko's career, from start to finish. That is why I think he is the best fighter in the world, not "30-1" (which is actually 30-0 2 NC, as his "loss" was a cut from an illegal blow). Go watch the complete career before you talk trash about someone you don't know. He took the hardest slam in all of MMA and didn't even react, just flipped his opponent over and arm barred him. The closest transliteration of this name to English is roughly "Yemelyanenko Fyodor". On his official web site, they translate his name as "Emelyanenko". Re his name, his official web site spells it "Emelyanenko". His book spells it "Emelianenko". There is *no* wrong spelling for a name written in Cyrillic transliterated to English. You shouldn't base your opinion toward MMA fighters on one fight between two people. There are some great MMA fighters who box very well and come from boxing background. You should judge on a case by case basis. In this case Tim Silva sucks at boxing and Ray Mercer is a good boxer.

It doesn't work that way. A boxer is so good at punching, because that is what they practise day in and day out. The stand-up game in MMA is far more complex, it involves leg-kicks, body-kicks, head-kicks, push-kicks, Muay Thai behind-the-head clinch and so on -- as well as the punching. A boxer can't use a boxing stance, or their legs will be destroyed and they won't have any spring in their step at all.
In this bout, Tim was stupid to stand & box, he should have done leg kicks then ground.

If boxers fought with the traditional angled boxing stance in an MMA fight, their legs would be mashed potatoes. The reason you don't like MMA striking is because you have to adjust your stance to deal with leg kicks and the like (against a good fighter - the dude above hasn't been for years).

this doesnt show n ething, it just shows how much tim sylvia is not a striker. tim always wants to fight stand up with guys who are beter than him in that and always gets crushed. boxers by design arent naturaly stronger in terms of pure strength than mma fighters based on the amount of weight training and resisitance theydo compared to boxers, its science, in most cases in a boxing match the boxer has the edge. a complete striker would kil a complete boxer most of the time in a striking match.

i agree a high level striker in mma comes from so many angles and uses so many tactics that would be illegal in a boxing match. dirty boxing, elbows, back fists, backhanding(which bothers the hell out of boxers, i know this because i do it at my gym lol), that to limit an mma fighter to the straight forward, hooks, uppers, jabs, crosses, straights would be to the boxers advantage because mma fighters are use to limiting themsleves that way. boxers have gameplans based on the limited striking

I don't think it shows anything about the relative sports but I do think it shows that Sylvia did well whilst he was champion, had less to prove to win a fight and no one could quite work out how to deal with the size issue. Couture showed them how though and now everyone's doing it, get in close seems to be the key... if only Andrei worked that out he might have had a better time out in that rubber match.

You're right I don't watch boxing very often. I don't watch grass grow either for the same reason. MMA is growing exponentially and boxing is declining at the same rate. The "plenty" of time you say boxing has to go is all borrowed.

You say boxing has been dead for awhile, well how about you look up some recent PPV buys for boxing and MMA. YOu will see boxing by far generates more money and fans.

the reason MMA fans diss on boxing imo is because of all the guys in boxing discrediting MMA as a real sport. Boxing isnt dead it jus isnt the same anymore, boxing PPV's do generate more but not on a consistent basis, UFC PPV's are consistently selling every month you cant say that with boxing.

Boxers shouldn't discredit MMA and vice-versa.People have to realize not to compare Boxing and MMA.They are both combat sports but in different levels of competition.You're right boxing isn't what it used to be b/c there is no American Heavyweight for us to look to like back in the day.We need more Tyson and Holyfield to have boxing be at it's best, and to have a Klitschko who nobody in the US cares about dominate the most marketable division in the world puts boxing a step below what it was.

Boxing and MMA shouldnt be compared like Hockey and Football shouldnt be compared. But what i do wanna see is MMA get covered on ESPN like all the other sports do. I mean that is such bullshit to see tennis and golf get covered way more than MMA and even boxing, really who the fuck would rather watch golf and tennis rather than a fight?

Yeah ESPN should step it up when it comes to that stuff. UFC 100 is like the first time I've ever seen ESPN hype a MMA PPV. MMA doesn't appeal to old ass people like boxing still does, and ESPN still sucks at covering boxing. Plus they don't cover UFC b/c like I said they are all old ass people who wouldn't know shit about MMA.

The UFC now brings in literally tens of millions of dollars every UFC event, once you factor in PPV sales, ticket sales and later DVD sales. They have more than one pay event per month average.
So how does that compare to boxing revenues?
That said, I think Dana White is an absolutely greedy, disrespectful fucker that should be run over by a few thousand shopping carts.
The majority of the income goes back into advertising and the management's pockets, very little of it to the fighters.

PLUS a good MMA fighter has some sort of stand-up skill and all forms of standup have some sort of boxing in them. Watch Diego Corrales v. Jose Luis Castillo 1 and tell me that boxing is a boring sport that people won't pay to watch.
