Man o man!!! I knew the Dixie Hummingbirds and Paul Simon did this. But I just love it with Stevie Wonder being added in there. This is so refreshing. Thanks for posting this ray of sunshine.
To Esperanza243: "The Rock" reference is a religious symbol for a strong unmoving, unchanging thing in the midst of turmoil, like God's love or a rock in the ocean. The song "Rock of Ages, cleft for me" uses the same reference. So if someone "loves you like a rock" it's an unchanging, undying love.
It's been edited from this particular file, but the band actually had to restart the song because Stevie Wonder forgot his lines. He lifted his sunglasses from his face, and said "I guess I forgot my cue cards."
@Asylum709. Good... you're not holding that against him. Glad to hear that Assylum. Good talent, always recognizes... Good Talent. Nice to hear you're not a "Hater". When I grow up...I think...I wanna be just like you. @shoutfactory, nice performance. Thanks for posting.
Does anyone understand this song? I've read the words to Paul Simon's song quite a few times and still don't understand it. Why would a mother love her son like a rock?
@Esperanza243 — I'm sure the poet is referring, not to his literal mother, but to his momma, in the African-American sense, you know? He means his lover, girlfriend, wife, paramour, etc., — someone who is perhaps the mother of his children, but not his own maternal ancestor.
When they do shows like the X Factor... this is what they are looking for (and do they ever find it?). Amazing talent, individual voices you immediately recognise. An absolute joy to watch and hear!!! All the guys on stage, brilliant!
Actually all their looking for someone who's easy to market and they can make a quick buck off. Who needs to find talent when you can package shit and the people will buy it.
this was a great dendition! I don't normally make a racial point of things usually, but seeing paul simon in concert with a group of black soul/gospel singers, black tie playing in a gorgeous theater with an almost completely white audience singing a white adaptation of black music. I makes me think about how innocuous racism can be.
@RhythmBluesSoul1 ....Paul Simon went through this phase when he was facinated with the Black culture, for some reason......But, i'm not gonna hold that against him....he's a talented singer/songwriter
@Asylum709 Dude if only you knew how dumb this sounds. I guess Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Elton John and countless other white performers went through this same phase huh? Stop it. Good music is good music period.
@deshawn1020 actually, Paul Simon is the original composer, but he recorded the original version with the Dixie Hummingbirds, and then they put out their own version sans him, which did quite well.
you have a valid point, but my counter is this: the amazing influence of black culture on day-to-day american life is undeniable and we're all better (and some would say "blacker") for it.
The Dixie Hummingbirds were awesome on this on the original "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" and then in we have Stevie Wonder.
Paul Simon always said he wrote songs his voice couldn't handle and I guess this is one of them. Funny he is the only one who can still hit those high notes though . . . !
Love this song! My Mom's loves me

@ladyeulailia I imagine Paul Simon cares that he wrote it, it probably made him a fair amount of money.

For those unsure about who wrote the words and music, Paul Simon's website gives him (Paul Simon) credit for both music and lyrics.

what do you mean a white adaptation? this is paul simon's original song.

He could mean that the style of music has its roots in black culture.
