  • Outfuckingstanding.

  • I remember making a video like this for a girlfriend. It was George Michael's Praying For Time. There was no mp3 or audio compression back then, so I recorded the program on tape, and when you hit run, the tape would run again and the music would play. Ah, the days of the Atari 130 XE.

  • cool man ;D

  • sophisicated, sensitive, very artfully executed, and a perfect medium for what the music means. amAAAzing. truly wonderful.

curious: is the text "wedding ring" a deliberate mistake for the lyrics "ready ring"? very intriguing!!! thank you for making this beautiful truthful sad life-fulfilling video. i'm truly madly deeply touched. keep creating.

  • First open-source music ever made.

  • That's insanely amazing. Wow, my favourite music music video. Great every time.

  • In BASIC on an old apple. Brilliant man, just brilliant.

  • Always loved Grandaddy... Always will.. This song brings tears to my eyes just from the sheer beauty

  • Great song. Love Grandaddy. And love your vid mang. Kudos! Very 7337.

  • teet?

  • One of the best songs ever written. Our band is named in honor of Jed and Grandaddy.

  • its beautiful man, i like your code skills too... on a vintage mac? you my friend are 1338

  • Not a vintage Mac, but an Apple II. It's _before_ the Macintosh existed ;)

  • really before mac cool man

  • @stew4rtsmith Yeah! Apples Kicked Ass Macs Suck Balls.

  • Did anyone else notice this song,Beautiful Ground , was used as background music on the Channel 4 documentary "TheFalling Man" ? The documentary was about trying to identify one of the jumpers from the twin towers from a press photograph....ironic ,a little bit sick or just coincedence?..great video and song by the way...5*'s

  • flawless

  • Amazing, very neat and well done. I just sold a WOZ edition IIGS on ebay because I need the money. Hope it went to a good home.

  • Love this song and the video is just beautiful!

  • apt. I love it. I freaking love Grandaddy and their robot fetish. This seems like the ideal way for their primitive Jed to communicate his poem... because of course, as you know, the projects that followed him were much more advanced and improved upon an already great - although neglected - concept and set up.

    Ah how I MISS Grandaddy.

  • Test tones and failed clones and odd parts made you

  • Great song & video. I wonder if that was Jed's last poem just before crashing...

  • I give you probs for that. I've always wanted to do something sort of like that but never learned to program =(. you got up to almost 4000 lines lol not bad

  • prett y cool :°)

  • this is great, how was it done?

  • They showed you the source code at the end, just type that into an old Apple II and you can recreate it at home.

  • It's the first open-source music video. Code available on my site. If you don't have a real Apple II then I recommend the Virtual II emulator.

  • Awesome video... But oh, how I wish you hadn't cut out the last line. Its my favorite.

  • You'll find the full version on Vimeo. Yes, it includes the last line.

  • fantastic

  • extremely creative use of trailing-edge technology

to produce a most highly imaginative rendering

which complements a first-rate song beautifully.

    highest kudos...

  • my version thanks to grandaddy and stew

    watch?v=SeD9_D7rPkQ

  • OMG my ears ......im joking its great

  • Great song - great video. Basic is good. Come back grandaddy.

  • This is really cool. Good job.

  • Visually it reminds me of the OK Computer lyrics layout and aurally of The Eels. Most enjoyable ☺

  • This song and this video are fantastic!

  • Excellent video. Extremely well done!

  • Incredible - in terms of concept and execution. A beautiful accompaniment to a haunting song, I applaud you.

  • genius.... nothing more can be said

  • I like the video.

  • outstanding video. i really love it.

  • Beautifully done! I started computing on an Apple II+

  • This song, the other Jed song, and So You Aim Toward the Sky are my favorite Grandaddy songs of all time!!

So fucking brilliant it makes me sick.

  • @stew4rtsmith: WOW you made this video by yourself?amazing

  • thanks ;)

  • This is one of my favorite songs now, its really deep and I love the mood the music gives, and that the vid is on a old apple is awesome

  • I mean, I like the lyrics and so-on now

  • WOW I REALLY SAID THIS? lol

qwertyxf (6 months ago)cool vid but ugly lyrics

    --

qwertyxf (6 months ago)but the music itself is godd but not the text they sing :P

    ----

Sorry, i wasnt really good in english back then.

Now i Watched it again i like it.

no i still dont read books though lol

  • n'import quoi, je l'aime

  • This song gives me the chills...

  • Brilliant. One of the most criminally underrated bands ever.

  • i never get tired of this work of beauty.

  • ;-;

    Poor Jed.

  • Now, this is how great songs like "Still Alive" are made.

  • Yea . . . I'm a big fan of the "Still Alive" video. When my friend showed it to me he introduced it by saying "check it out, these guys totally copied you." I don't know about that exactly, but it is very similar. (I had the idea for this in 2002 and made the actual video in 2005. Portal's "Still Alive" came out two years later.)

  • Hmm...maybe your video was Johnathan Coulton's inspiration for "Still Alive". ;)

"And remember, the Weighted Compainion Cube will never threaten to stab you, and, in fact, cannot speak."

  • Well, stolen, perhaps. But always remind yourself.

Good ideas will always be stolen or copied.

"I see you. Are you still there?"

  • Good advice, but what about bad ideas?

  • That was so beautiful i broke down and cried... ='(

    well not really

but this is really a masterpiece...

  • I've watched this video around 10 times now in several days. It's truly a masterpiece. The synchronisation to the lyrics, the filming, the programming.. everything's just awesome. I just love when the Apple does the printout of the program at the end of the video and the camera slowly zooms out while that soft emotional music is playing. It gives a sort of cold and poetic digital feeling. Hard to describe, but this is art. Highly priced ART!

  • nice band, nice idea

  • love it!

  • The text is not that bad.. really a good work, i like it! bye from italy ;)

  • but the music itself is godd but not the text they sing :P

  • Yeah, like I'm going to go by what some kid who doesn't even read books tells me about the validity of a song's lyrics.

Stop hating on this song...it's sad and beautiful. Poor Jed.

  • cool vid but ugly lyrics

  • Yeah.... I'll trust your taste in music, 'Zaboomafoo' :|

  • I hadn't heard of Grandaddy when I first saw this video, now I own two of their albums (The Sophtware Slump and Under the Western Freeway).

  • Great work. It captures the sadness of the song so well, the way we personified these machines in our youth... When the camera zooms out at the end, with the endless code, it's very moving, even though it's just some old computer.

  • thumb up

  • im in love with this video/song.

  • I love this.

  • Owns!

  • What a great song.

  • wonderful!

  • quite moving.. well done, nice idea
