  • REMEMBER DUANE ALLMAN

  • @rosshmusic Thanks for the info on Derek. I was told once that he was Butch's son and I came to believe that.

  • at 5:38 Derek pulls out the slide from his pocket, check out the video screen!

  • you feel claptons pain. this is amazing.

  • How about this?

From ~2:17 on we hear the personal mix that Eric gets on his floor monitors.

    Perfect sound, only himself missing...

  • is that steve jordan on the drums?

  • @mollet09 Yes, Steve Jordan and that drummer that played with Clapton and Winwood at MSG. Unfortunately it wasn't Steve in that concert.

  • More guitar players should play SGs?

  • why does Clapton got to be so dam good?

  • Derek Trucks is the best living slide guitarist.

  • this is a nice version but the live version offered on the overseas album was better. that set the standard and it was truly powerful, but this is a good second and I'm glad it's here ... Derek is a great guitar player but god damn if he isn't comatose visually. The Allman's need Dickey and Warren up front, not Derek.

  • no one should knock this vid...music played is a space in time...everyone has their own idealic version of what they want to hear...that is is what our ears and mind desire...but each player here is playing for us..the audience..eric has played this countless times..i've seen it...but there is still a joy when the opening riff starts and he is still playing and with the other musicians he looks like he is happy..

  • Clapton is a cool singer, player and songwriter. But he is somewhat predictable in his playing, I would say.

  • @NickeyWhitfield most overrated player off all time but great song and rendition

  • Just plain awful drumming. The original was one of the best drummed song of all time. Love Eric but is he overrated. Duane was the best guitarist on DATD.

  • @irishace11 do you even know who is drumming on this? are you serious? steve jordan 1 of the greats of all time and here again....does not disappoint

  • Eric & Derek =Wonderful Players !!!

  • 4am. Insomnia strikes. And then you remember youtube, stick the headphones on and have a blast of Eric, Derek and Doyle. So hat's off to the frigging insomnia. :-)

  • When Clapton lets you take the lead, you know you're doing something right.

  • i dislike those 3 people who disliked this song!!

  • too bad they almost muted clapton in a guitar duet, sometimes the sound guys just dont get it -_-

  • @karawanmann

ugh, didn't take my comment the first time through... There were apparently some technical difficulties that cause the soundboard of Eric's feed to be so low. There are some other streamed versions on YouTube that have his guitar at the level where it should be.

That would also be why it only made it onto the BestBuy bonus disc. It's not gonna make the cut if Eric's guitar feed wasn't captured right. ;)

  • @rosshmusic

This makes the question why this version is published at all.

    --

I think it is the georgeous sound quality (apart from claptons guitar level in the final duet).

Hear the drums how go as one, the bass..., the enthusiasm both background singers bring into their part, and of course Derek Trucks stellar playing, Erics singing,

the happy feeling from the start with the girls from the catering(?).

All make up simply the best!

  • @karawanmann

if u want to hear clapton solo den wach dis Video youtube.com/watch?v=AxWOfJpPQuU

bt unfortunately the video quality is low nd the main thng is here dey muted derek 'sguitar.....wht shittt!!

  • @karawanmann it ment to be to sound like eco

  • 4:33 Gibson and Fender never looked or sounded so beautiful together...

  • one of the best hammond solos I've heard! amazing.

  • I could listen to them jam on this all day, amazing

  • Derek Trucks is a fucking beast on guitar! One of my favourite player because of his particular feeling

  • I´m sad that there isn´t a liveversion that sounds just a little like the originalrecording. The "guitarlove" on the album is, in my opinion, the essence of this song. And I dont get the backingvocals on the chorus.....why does it have to get all gospel-ish!!! The greatest song by Derek and the Dominos - but too bad that it isn´t played as it was meant to.

EC is the greatest bluesmusician ever - dont get me wrong :)

  • @lemvigPJ It's tough to say that this isn't the way the song was meant. I mean, it's HIS tune! There are new elements to the song and that comes with growth as a musician. Do you have the same opinion about the Unplugged version of Layla??? Is that not the way the song was "meant to be"?

  • @BigOperaguy Dont get me wrong - I´m all for growth and trying new things, and some times it gets close to the original, such as your exampel "Layla". In my oppinion, I dont think that EC wrote the song with an unplugged version in mind. Therefore the unplugged version isn´t "the way it was meant to be" - but what a version, EPIC!!

My thoughts about the "Why does love got to be so sad" track is this: I find that the recording on the album, is one of the strongest og most intence from EC ever..

  • @BigOperaguy ...and I think that some tracks are better off being played as "strong" as possible! I love the gospel/reggae/blues theme that EC has implementet in his music over the years, but this very song/album is to me the very essence of Eric as an electric guitar musician. His voice og guitar on this album is properbly the best in his career. The duo between Allman/Clapton is like two guitars makin love, and that part is missing in the live version - that makes me sad :)

  • @lemvigPJ

There is no way to recreate the magic that happened in the studio when making this album... but as far as paying homage to the original goes, this is top notch imo.

  • @rosshmusic So close and yet so far away - lose the Hammond and the backing vocals - make it rough and straight......

  • @rosshmusic yeah, they will never be able to reproduce it perfectly. It's too bad Duane Allman died right after they finished recording the Layla sessions.

The drug problems of all the band members were bad.

  • um, that's Derek Trucks, the nephew of Bruce Trucks (drummer for Allman's). Elijah ... is not on stage. And Elijah Blue is Gregg's son ... not Duane's. :-#

  • God, you could NEVER beat this backing band! The great drummer Steve Jordan, bassist Willie Weeks,,, and adding Derek Trucks' slide playing to all the others, I'm speechless, really. An ideal song for slide guitar, too.

  • So, why does love got to be so sad? :(

  • @Molekulica So people can write songs like this! Hahaha

  • That piano solo is so nice...

  • why isnt this on the dvd?!?!?!?!?

  • This song was on a bonus DVD in the USA if you bought it at Best Buy. Regarding Steve Jordan and his jacket, that one shot was filler footage from another song. If you notice at the end of the clip, the jacket it gone again. Good eyes you guys, I never noticed myself either!

  • nothing like a B3

  • Incredible! There is no better than this! Steve Jordan rocks! Clapton=60's rock legend! Derek Trucks = greatest guitarist of gen y & a legend in the making! You can hear echoes of the Allmans in him but he makes it all his own! Clapton's smile & look @ Derek @ 5:34 is awesome; he's impressed & loving playing with this kid! The jam from minute 5:00- 6:30 is epic! I love that Steve Winwood and Jeff Beck are just chillin out in the sidelines! They look amazed & like they want to play too!

  • Wonderful

  • This an awesome rendition of this classic by two monsters on guitar. Just one question at the 4:46 mark of this video drummer Steve Jordan has on a white jacket, he had been the entire song in his orange shirt, how did he get the jacket on ? Did he stop playing to put it on ?

  • @teefez well, there are 2 drummers... guess he could stop 20 secs to get his jacket on xD

  • @teefez The other drummer most likely kept playing while steve put his jacket on. notice at 4:13 that there are two drummers

  • Two Guitar Gods tearin' it up! And, yes, I think Skydog must be playin' along and lovin' it!!

  • i love how eric, playing a song he did when he masqueraded as derek, is having a man who is the figurative reincarnation of the other guitarist who played on the track and who is named derek take the lead on this. just poetic.

  • DT man.. DT...

  • Derek Trucks is fucking awesome.

  • I love the way that Eric stands slightly behind Derek for the dual solos, and lets him take the lead.............symbolic "changing of the guard"...............Both GREAT players.

  • Eric + Derek + Doyle = Music

  • Is this Steve Jordan on drums? The guy who plays in the John Mayer Trio as well?

What an awsome guitarist is Derek Trucks, his playing is very much like Duane Allman, no wonder the Allman Brothers Band asked him to join!

Most of the time I like the studio recordings of the Layla album more than the live versions of Clapton, because Duane isn't there, but this one comes very close! :D

  • @huubramler

Yes, he's Steve Jordan and guy's a legend!

  • Listen any version of this song. I guarantee that you won't find any more vibrant, more heart touching or more diverting to listen. Derek Trucks proofs that he's one of the best and Eric Clapton proofs he still got it and he always will as long as he holds Blackie.

  • there are few guitar players that give me chills - Duane was one, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes today. And of course, the old master, Eric.

Was Trucks named after Derek and the Dominos?

  • @cholakiand Yes. Ironic isn't it?

  • Derek is an amazing guitar player. I think without a doubt he's the best guitar player of this generation. He'll really keep the candle buring along with the other new guitar players for the years to come.

  • this is one of my favorites on you tube

  • Great Song, and still relevant in 2010! Now how great is Derek Trucks?? And yes no Slide, he is really that good! Big hats off to Eric to bring in the new young lions and not worry about his ego. but the great think is how Doyle Bramhall III stands down and lets Trucks play!! watch him move over and let Derek & Eric trade off. What a class act! There is a reason that Doyle is in Clapton's band!!! Damn- Trucks is a monster!

  • An amazing testament to Trucks' gifts.

  • so true about Clapton letting Derek play...he stands behind and plays under....that's a true master

  • OMG it's simply fantastic!

  • who says Derek cant play w/out the slide, seems he played every Lick w/old slowhand himself, Move over old timers there,s a new guitar king in town and his name is Derek Trucks.

  • Trucks is fucking amazing....what a unique style. You can hear Uncle Duane in there.

  • the mix in this is awful. drums are way too loud. can barely hear guitar parts

  • ...right up there with the original...

which is to say: completely astounding.

    man, oh man, Derek Trucks...

  • Gorgeous, what is this idle chatter..........

  • o yea!!

  • the drummer has a quite comfortable looking chair.

  • these back-up vocals are golden - I love this song

  • WOW.....absolutely amazing. Nothing more needs to be said. It's amazing to watch the love and respect work between the entire band, but the dual solo is just fantastic.

  • Really frustrating from 4:02 onwards... the Clapton part in this fantastic flowing lead guitar duet is only to be guessed.

Looks like father and son, pouring out interlocked bits of sadness...

  • Saw Clapton play this with the ABB year ago at the Beacon- outta sight!

Also cool to see/hear CLapton play on ABB tunes...a lot of fun was had those 2 nights!

...also- really like Doyle's singing on Derek's most recent album !

  • isnt there a version of this anywhere that isnt messed up? this one you cant hear eric at the end very well and in the other ive seen you cant hear the keyboard player and the mix isnt as good.

  • @timmy47 i don't think the mix is off on this i think it's just clapton's choice. during his guitar solo you can hear how loud it goes but when him and derek both play his is quieter because his guitar is turned down so he can play under derek and let derek shine

  • @brucefan181 no, its the mix. again, ive heard another version where you can hear them both very well but the keyboard solo is quiet.

  • So nice to see this vid. What a great guitar player Elijah is turning out to be. I think Duane is up there guidin' him. I got chills and started cryin'. So nice to see this.

  • @funwithFred When you refer to Elijah, are you meaning Derek Trucks?

  • @rosshmusic ...he thinks that's Gregg Allman's kid

  • @rosshmusic Elijah Blue is Cher and Greg Allman's child...not Derek Trucks as funwithFred is saying...

  • I was wondering the same thing...@rosshmusic

  • @funwithFred May I ask WHO ELIJAH is? I don't think there's an Elijah up there.

  • @Pandolin11 Elijah is Gregg Allmans son....

  • @ohnonotme52 not in the same league ...

  • @ohnonotme52 I got that a while ago. But thanks.

  • @funwithFred i cried and peed a little

  • @funwithFred Meant Derek.....'scuse me.....

  • WONDERFUL

  • Ummm.. just an FYI, yeah there are parts that are the same everytime the songs are played, but lemme just say, I've never heard Eric, Derek or Doyle play the same solo before.... never....

  • drummer looks like steve jordan ahha.

  • @pastyourhorizon it's steve jordan ...

  • pt 2: "you can see that they know..." And how exactly do you come to that conclusion? because they are comfortable playing off of each other? Because they can hear something and play it right back? That doesn't mean they wrote out the arts beforehand, it means they are very good improvisers.

  • pt 2: Miles Davis and other jazz guys routinely release(d) live jazz albums, and they don't work out anything more detailed than the order of the solos beforehand. This band had been playing this tune on tour for over a year, with an improvised ending each time. What grounds do you have to say that they wrote out this part because it was going to be on an official release? Did Clapton himself say it was planned out? Why should we think they did it differently from how they always did it?

  • Part 1

Yeah I know that they improvised their solos on most songs they play live, but when it's planned to be realeased bands normally do follow a surtain path, this is because they wanna make the song sound as good as possible and many of us know that many times that they do improvise it doesnt always sound that good, and many misstakes appear, search around youtube for this song, with trucks and clapton and you will hear that all the other versions arnt that stunning like this one :)

  • pt 2: You can easily see that they know what the other part is going to play, Derek's main solo is improvised yes, but not when they play solo toogether.

If you look at the crossroads special features you will see that they are praticing during the day before, also with Mr. Winwood :)

Just because they are not improvising this time, doesnt mean that they are bad musicians, it's only a way to secure at good product. But Clapton wasnt happy with this version either, so it didnt make the dvd

  • I am sorry, i would have to disagree anyway. I understand where your coming from, but it seems like your basically conjecturing. Of course they rehearse the song at soundcheck, but that doesn't mean they plan out the parts beforehand. As for "not as stunning as this one," that's a subjective statement. I have heard many more stunning versions of "Why does love" than this.Mistakes are part of the territory, and for the record this versions DID make the DVD of versions released by Best Buy.

  • Both Derek's main solo and the duet part with Clapton are clearly improvised. You can watch different live versions of this song and the duet is always different; in fact, there are far better versions than this "rehearsed" one. Simply because they rehearsed the song the day before doesn't mean they worked out a duet note-for-note. In rehearsal you're working out the general structure of the tune, not trying to coordinate a 3 minute duet note-for-note - it's too painstaking and inefficient.

  • @LeifJohan Probably wasn't included because Erics guitar during the duet wasn't properly in the mix. What we hear is his guitar bleeding through other microphones. Sad.

  • i wanted to hear doyle too

  • In my opinion Derek is the best guitarist of young generation. Every time when I listen his guitar, it makes me smile, even now, when I listen that's truly sad song about unexecuted love. But it's just fantastic, yeah! :D

    Greetings from Poland!

  • Derek trucks is the man!!!

  • That is a damn good question.

  • The fact that they didnt include this song on the Crossroads 2007 dvd annoy me big time!!! One of the best songs preformed that day!!!

  • @LeifJohan youre right

  • @LeifJohan But it is on the DVD...

I am sure it is on my copy, although mine is the Australian version.

  • This a well practiced preformance, because if it's recording on this show... So the solos between Eric and Derek is not improvised, they had planned what to play to make it sound as unique and hip as it could...

Doyle didnt get solo here because his take on Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad is more hardrocked than Derek's take, so it wouldnt had fitted that well :)

But Doyle did have solos on this song preformed in the 2006/2007 would tour, and again in 2008/2009, where he made the song his :)

  • you sure about these not being improvised??? Derek and Warren do this kind of stuff all the time. Seems like they're doing a semi simultaneous call and response type of thing. Idk though thats interesting

  • Yeah I know this 100 %.

Yeah normally they do improvise the solos.

But to give the best possible show and version for the DVD recording they had all the parts figured out..

  • parts figured out? I am sorry i would have to disagree. Clapton, Trucks, etc. have been improvising musicians there entire lives. Its structured improvising, but so is all but the most avante-garde jazz. It has never been in the nature of any of those players to work out parts beforehand, they do it on the cuff.

Where did you hear that it was not improvised? A link to an article perhaps?

  • that look on clapton's face at 5:32 is priceless. looks like he realizes that blues music isn't going to die with all of this young talent coming up

  • 7 minutes of jamming and Doyle didn't get a solo...what a yip! what's up with that!!?

  • @gebamst you are stupid

  • This is spectacular. Exhibit A for anyone who thinks Derek Trucks is just a slide player (though he's too low in the mix in this version). Eric & Derek have great chemistry.

  • 0:18 - derek, doyle and eric stomps hahaha

  • hard to recreate the way Duane and Eric played so well together.

    But this was some-what decent.

Clapton doesn't have that fire anymore.

But I still love him.HE was my idol in the 70's.

  • What does Eric say at 5:40? Half ?

    Referring to half tempo?

  • @AutoFirePad yeah

  • yep i think youre right,

    greta stuff right here.

  • About time Clapton played with some brothers; this band kicks it up a notch from all of the post Carl Radle groups.

For a guy who loves the blues, Clapton sure plays with a lot of white guys...

  • @cdy4ddy cause he looks at ability not skin? besides he has played with a lot of black blues msucians, buddy guym, bb king, freddie king, robert cray, so on...

  • hmm not totally true though what about the late great billy preston, and most of his backing band from the one more care one more rider tour.....

  • oh man that was like one of the best preformances iv seen from clapton and trucks so fantastic!

  • I dont care how good he is... I cant take that doyle guy seriously becuase he plays an upside down backwards guitar....

  • umm does this mean you can't take Hendrix seriously either?

  • its the upside down part that pisses me off, not so much the lefty

  • yeah it's a little funky

  • @sneakonproductionz

Why? That's a weird thing to get pissed off about.

  • @evanguy

yea I guess pissed isnt the right word... its like this: I hear his guitar doing crazy stuff, it just means nothing to me becuase his guitar is upside down. If it was just lefty then it wouldnt be a big deal

the guy below me shouldnt rag on derek though... he is just a slide guy

  • @sneakonproductionz then you must hate jimi...

  • see above comments... its not the lefty part that bothers me, its that he strings it backwards.....

    "then you must hate jimi"

"then you must not read the other comments"

  • Albert King and Jimi Hendrix were lefties who played upside-down guitars. Hendrix restrung his, but King and Doyle truly played upside-down.

  • Man, I wish those two guys would've taken the time to learn the right way to play...............

  • 3:14 on is magic

  • See how these other guitarists seem like insects next to Eric!ha ha ha ha.Pretty good band tho.Drums bass and Keys are solid!

  • he he he... idk i thought derek trucks held it down.

  • just cuz the other guitarists' volume isn't as high as the clapton's doesn't mean that they suck.

Derek was invited to play with the Allman Brothers at age 20 that NEVER happens

  • WOW GREAT PREFORMANCE!!! I saw derek live 2 times and man does he just blow you mind! Going to see him aug 19 with the brothers!!! Havent seen clapton yet:(

  • What key are they soloing in, Am pent??

  • for the first solo, the second solos near the ending are played in Gb min pent.

  • yes

  • Why can't the goddam bass player respect Carl Radle and play the damn original part which is fucking monstrous.

  • Carl Radle, to is me is the best bass player. period

  • Is that Carl Radle in this video? That is one of the sweetest bass lines ever in this song.

  • Sorry, Carl Radle died in 1980 from a heroin related issues. But, if you just google Carl Radle, you'll find out all you need to know. He just rocked. But even this song alone smokes!

  • awesome steve jordan on drums

  • My favourite song... I like this solo of clapton.. i can hear it one houndred times a day and its still cool

  • Eric is pure "HUMBLE GREATNESS!" He is secure in his greatness to let the young bloods cut in on his original masterpiece. Remeber, Duanne Allman was not there for the "Live at the Fillmore" recording in 1970. Clapton Shines!!!!!!!!

  • Eric always did best when pushed by another hotshot onstage. Love to hear Derek play without slide too, like he does here.

  • Derek Trucks is Duane Allman reincarnate.

  • not quite but probably one of the best guitarist of our day

  • The best.

  • Everybody remember Duane's stunning solo on the original ?

Derek with Eric is pure magic .

  • sorry if this has been asked, but who's the second drummer (or I guess I should say 'other' - the one that's not Steve Jordan?

  • Sweet to find a guitarist that Clapton can play with on the same level. As he was never known for slide guitar, Derek Trucks seriously complements his work. Wonder if Trucks would ever have taken this path were it not for EC?

  • Interesting thoughts, dude. Trucks had the Allman route for the most part, being the son of butch trucks, drummer for the Allman Bros. So, this musical prowess runs in the fam. His sound is such a great complement to EC's, I fully agree.

  • Sorry. Butch Trucks isn't the father of Derek , he is his uncle

  • they gotta bring up Derek's guitar.

  • Thats Eric's guitar thats missing from the mix in the last part of the song... Derek sounds pretty even to me.

  • It seems that when Eric plays he surrounds himself with musicians that are the best.

  • lol that's probably because he's Eric Clapton.

  • who would NOT want to play with eric?

  • Steve Jordan is a fantastic drummer.

  • and his partner with the gibson is a demigot (at least)

  • I know. It's my favorite solo eric has ever done! Amazing.
