i loved this show when it was on tv. it was full of fakes like this, (actually this is one of the more believable ones!) but never really came out and said "this is nonsense"... of course he can ring an upturned bell in an empty room, anybody who's shouted or sneezed next to an acoustic guitar in a quiet room could tell you it resonates.

I am a 1st dan Karate shotokan, kiai is a technique to unleash the maximum energy from your body into the technique you are doing , to deal the hardest shock, ad in the old japan it wasnt a simple "shout" but a real technique that required some dedicated lessons. There is no way to hurt anyone just with the kiai, without a tecnique... it would be just like accelerating with a racing carm and use NOS but having the neutral gear in. just noise and waste of energy.
anyone else notice that when the Kiai master rang the bell at the end of the video, he simultaneously strikes the ground with his foot when he yells?. (wonder why that is?). also it is the loudest when he is closer to it & becomes more faint the further away he gets...this hogwash needs to be weeded out of society.

I do not believe this video is to be taken seriously. But I watched the part over many times to ascertain if the swordsman is falling before the kiai is released. I see him extending forward which lowers his stance and reference but he does not drop until the kiai is in progress. However, the sword attack was very slow compared to the bursting speed I am familiar with from kendo. The last part of ringing the temple bell was kind of cool in theory.
@Piatasify i think so too because i am a ninjutsu student and i never heard of this, and we train 3 ninjutsu schools and 6 samurai schools so. i don't know. but i don't believe this will work. just use martial arts and combine it with weapons if possible. i think the only effective thing about kiai is that you distract your opponent for a second or so. enough to give him another punch orso. he is off guard that one second

I think there's definitely something to this Kiai stuff, but I also think it's no where near as powerful as they claim. I mean a powerful sound can definitely disarm an attacker. It freak him out and catch him off gaurd if done w/ proper timing & intensity. That was probably the original point of Kiai before people started using it to scam others claiming it could be used to enact magical blows.
Not that i am trying to knock what you are saying or anything, but that may work for them because they have much more sensitive hearing than we do. Also I used to have a music teacher who could make crystal wine glasses resonate with her voice. It was quite similar to this guy but much higher pitched.

I think there's definitely something to this Kiai stuff, but I also think it's no where near as powerful as they claim. I mean a powerful sound can definitely disarm an attacker. It freak him out and catch him off gaurd if done w/ proper timing & intensity. That was probably the original point of Kiai before people started using it to scam others claiming it could be used to enact magical blows.

Not that i am trying to knock what you are saying or anything, but that may work for them because they have much more sensitive hearing than we do. Also I used to have a music teacher who could make crystal wine glasses resonate with her voice. It was quite similar to this guy but much higher pitched.

I meant that using an accent in the dubbing is pointless and just makes it IMO seem cheesy that they've even bothered to do so, since using the accent serves no purpose really... Well, it is true that nowadays in our society we are not allowed to practice real war cries. They ARE effective, especially when you are in a group. It is mostly the surprise effect, that counts.
Still, this "report" is crap. If anyone is blindly believing any martial artist - let it be said: Find out if it (kiai - basically loud shouting) works YOURSELF. The truth can be found IN you - not on youtube.

i agree with renjixsan its a war cry which is meant to show a deadly intent or warning and supprise the opponent. I don't agree with kiai used as in fighting like the video kiai master vs mma. That is not what kiai is used for.
