Liberace was not only a great entertainer and loved by many but the way he could play a piano has never been repeated by anyone. Rest in Peace Liberace - you will always be remembered by those that loved your playing.
I also read that Liberace was a devout Catholic. Interesting that he had much in common with Andy Warhol. Both of at least partial Eastern European heritage, both somewhat "different" from the mainstream, both underrated as artistic talents (and known more for their "gimmick"), and both devout Catholics.
Liberace is sort of a punchline based on his flamboyance, but he was quite the pianist and just as importantly quite the entertainer. Looks like folks had a good time at his shows and got to see some a nice mix of classical and contemporary music, and that's good enough in my book. I've also read he was quite the fan-friendly, hands on sort of celebrity, inviting the audience on the stage after his shows to check out his pianos and his wild costumes and jewelry. A real showman.
@peterp21 Try getting a job... oh nevermind I doubt you could get hired anywhere. So the tax payers like me flip the bill for the welfare check so people like you can watch movies all day. Sad world we live in.
Liberace played all the music genres well, not just one, but all of them. Was he the greatest "classical" pianist ever? perhaps not, Horowitz comes to mind but name one other pianist who could play ALL the genres as well as Liberace. The snobs out there owe him for bringing classical music to so many people who might not otherwise have listened. Many of those people support the symphony today, I'm one of them. Greatest "overall" pianist of the 20th century? I think so, who else qualifies?
that guy is simply amazing. LIke others who have written here, I was far from being a fan of his as a youngster but I can see now how brilliant he was.

I still can't believe he's gay, I didn't find out until I watched Austin Powers for the first time... but that doesn't matter... This guy knows how to play the piano for real with some rhythm for reaaaaaalll. boooogie woooogieeeeee
Thanks for posting this terrific Liberace video. The sheet music for the piano part on his"Boogie Woogie" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
Yes, Liberace was a flaming homosexual, but he never shoved it in our face, so why not just appreciate his artistry as it was presented? Everyone has their private life, but Liberace was pretty discreet so let's not delve into it.
@thrummer1953 Although Liberace might not have been my favorite performer, he certainly had a great talent and it was a shame that he died when he did. I'm also aware that he was homosexual and to me it made no difference to me whether he was straight or gay. Liberace was what he was and once again it was a shame that he died before he time. People enjoyed him and still enjoy him even though nearly 25 years have passed since his untimely passing.
It's sad to read the museum has closed. I was lucky enough to see Liberace as a 12 year old. If I was ever to learn piano, I'd want to play his style. Magnificent.
One hell of a piano player. What a lot of people dont realise is that he was one of the toughest bare knuckle fighters on the East Coast at the time, putting his reputation and career on the line time and again against all comers who thought they could knock him out. A natural boxer with concussive power in both hands, Mike Tyson once said he based his early fighting style on Liberace but tried to be less savage. He was a good piano player. Liberace I mean.

Obviously, he had a superior photographic memory. However, I heard a BBC producer say that when Liberace visited the UK, about once a year, he would go around & talk to many in the BBC building, from directors to cleaners - and he would remember their names from the prior year, & asked about their kids & relatives by name & their ongoing life stories, which he knew about, from the prior year, & chat in a very thoughtful & kind manner. Amazing.
thank heavens for youtube and people like showmanlee to bring us videos like this of the greatest entertainer in my lifetime. As a teenager I loved his show, his style, his piano playing. He was by far, the most upbeat, positive spirit in showbusiness. He never failed to make me feel good after one of his shows.
For me, Liberace will always be the world's greatest entertainer. He completely mastered the piano and presented it in a way that made it enjoyable to millions the world over.
Liberace - A great entertainer but most of all a great talent. He always seemed to enjoy each and every preformance as much as the audience. Always seemed like such a truly nice person, a little gay (or a lot) but he even made that acceptable in a time when it wasn't always acceptable...
Got to hand it to the man,,, he knew what showmanship was. He was over the top in every way. And because of that he was known internationlly.
He was well aware of what people thought of him, and he turned it into a big joke.
After a journalist in England made some disparageing comments about him,, he replied... "Your words hurt my feelings,, and I'm crying all the way to the bank."
Quick story, my buddy actual met him once. His friend was gay and knew Liberace. Anyhow they went up to Liberace's room and had drinks with him. He's got pictures of it. He doesn't show anyone because people might think he was gay. He's married w/2 kids. Still pretty awesome, to have drinks with a megastar.
This man practiced at the piano with a fervor that made other professional pianists look like they neglected the organ. He dominated and was the highest paid entertainer of the 1950's, not Elvis Presley.
I don't know if anyone knows it but the "king of Bling", Liberace's brother George was also a talented musician. He was Liberace's business partner, band leader and accompanied his more famous brother on the violin.
My Dad saw him live...and when he was playing he said "You may laugh at the way I am, and the way I dress...but I laugh my ass all the way to the bank every night."
You would expect some great musician with a name like "Liberace" to be born in some unknown country, not Wisconson of all places! He was truly an artist, no other word can describe him. The way he played piano was nothing short of astounding.
Liberace made my mother want to try chopsticks duet by her self at age 16 and she practiced and succeeded thanks to him I get to listen to an awesome song by two of my favorite pianists
Liberace was just plain fun. For him the piano was a big playground and he invited us to join in on the fun. That was Liberace. My idea of piano playing is very different from his, but that is not a criticism at all - we all can set our own style, that does not mean that someone else's isn't wonderful too.
@rekab7070 i remember when he was on TV and i was into Rock & Roll.i used to think he was just an old guy on a piano and was strickly L7.when i look back with these clips i see i was L7.great talent and suberb entertainer.
@yarddoggg My pleasure. lf you want to see the ultimate use of this two finger pattern, check out Albert Ammons boogie Woogie Dream. Half way through the video he changes to this form and proceeds to lay it down heavy through to the finish...using just a finger and thumb across an octave.
I watched this and found myself smiling and laughing out loud, because Liberace made me feel good.. which is something I can say about JS Bach and only a few other famous musicians.
@yarddoggg lnitially liberace is using a simple 2 digit rolling bass, where the little finger is repeated / echoed by the thumb 1 octave higher. Typically in open key the notation would be, C-E-G-A-Bflat-A-G-E..then to F-A-C-D-Eflat-D-C-A then to G-B-D-E-F-E-D-B...Then back to the beginning. lf preferred, the two flats and F in the third can be shifted to C,E and G respectively. A typical sequence is; 1st repeated,2nd repeated,3rd once,2nd once,& back to 1st. and so on. Hope that helps..Have fun !
@yarddoggg The pattern given here is the left hand only one he uses whilst talking to the audience. The others are...shall we say...a little trickier to handle.
He was great. I was at one of his Concerts in Las Vegas, got up to go to the Bathroom he stopped the Show and said where are you going???Omg too funny.....lol
Now you know why this man was eearning a million dollars a year way back in the 1950s and was the worlds highest paid entertainer.
he also discovered Barbara Streisand. He can sure knock a tune out on that joe anna. I don't think I can think of anyone who can play as well as Liberace past or present
Thanks for sharring a fantastic video from one of the greatest entertainers and pianists of our time
The man was a legend in his own time and many people still miss his style, grace, pure talent, and sense of humor. As with many famous entertainers, their personal lives and preferences seem to be of more importance to others who are critical, but sadly do not focus on the most important issues of what contributions that talented people offer to the world and the mark they have left once they have gone. A tormented man to be sure, but what a showman and a world class player.
Liberace was not only a great entertainer and loved by many but the way he could play a piano has never been repeated by anyone. Rest in Peace Liberace - you will always be remembered by those that loved your playing.

Liberace wasn't gay, he was so straight he could prance around as a Nancy and it didn't affect his masculinity any.

@yarddoggg My pleasure. lf you want to see the ultimate use of this two finger pattern, check out Albert Ammons boogie Woogie Dream. Half way through the video he changes to this form and proceeds to lay it down heavy through to the finish...using just a finger and thumb across an octave.

I watched this and found myself smiling and laughing out loud, because Liberace made me feel good.. which is something I can say about JS Bach and only a few other famous musicians.

can anybody show me how to play the left hand notes from this video?
yarddoggg 9 months ago

Now you know why this man was eearning a million dollars a year way back in the 1950s and was the worlds highest paid entertainer.
he also discovered Barbara Streisand. He can sure knock a tune out on that joe anna. I don't think I can think of anyone who can play as well as Liberace past or present
Thanks for sharring a fantastic video from one of the greatest entertainers and pianists of our time
mrhomerbojangles 10 months ago
The man was a legend in his own time and many people still miss his style, grace, pure talent, and sense of humor. As with many famous entertainers, their personal lives and preferences seem to be of more importance to others who are critical, but sadly do not focus on the most important issues of what contributions that talented people offer to the world and the mark they have left once they have gone. A tormented man to be sure, but what a showman and a world class player.
