Marvellous idea,beautiful images.I would have loved more time and space to explore further.I'd even say the same for the playing,as heard here.I think of this unique work as a vast narrative poem,usually played too fast!It is certainly not primarily a virtuoso piece.The Faustian theme is a likely inspiration but there can be a vaguer legendary idea also,a pilgrimage thru mountains,jousts,lost loves,chapels,battles...then finally reaching for that sacred last,(and FIRST time in the score!)note.
