  • Also, There needs to be a mouth on the mouthpiece

  • The slide is on the wrong side of the trombone, 2 They Stole MY trombone, and 3 They have to TAKE OFF THE SLIDE LOCK

  • 4:54 This Is SPARTA

  • 1 he held it wrong 2 slide is on the wrong side 3 smart not using a trombone with the f trigger

  • plus the slide didnt come out because the air simply went out the mouthpeice

  • the slide was on the wrong side

  • Note played:B flat

    Position: 1

  • Hell yeah!wish i could do that on my trombone, but it would be a lot of money gone to waste.the producers are freaking rich.

  • trombone player

  • Omg! The slide didn't come out because it didn't have a fking slide oil on it! Dumb shit

  • so hard to watch.from a trombonist sand point.

  • I find it ironic that the slide is the part that won't break in this myth.

  • Get a fucking Tuba :D Lol Trombones are cool!

  • @Platschheimer Wow I've seen you comment on like 3 trombone videos complaining on all of them get a life. Jesus.

  • The conductor needs some gum or a patch to quit smoking.

  • the slide would be stiff (not lubricated) because it's used and bought to blow up so the shop wouldn't have fixed it up. So the slide wouldn't move

  • I play trombone :D

  • The slide didn't come off because It's too rusty and there's no one blowing into it like there was in the myth. It seems pretty obvious.

  • ~5:26 part of the reason why the slide didn't come off. That slide is complete junk.

  • Not all trombones are made the same. A high quality horn the guy was using was probably a Bach 42 or 36. That old one probably had a harder metal, so i wouldnt blow up as easily.

  • NOOO TROMBONES!!! I LOVED YOU!! I LOVED YOU!!!

  • amazing...when i get my nre trombone, im so trying this with my friends...lol...but i have to get the new trombone first. :P

  • its Australian!!!!!!!!!

  • jajaja muy buena...

  • Incredible!!!!!!

  • One ove my favoutrite videos on youtube. Destroying a trombone has always been a dream of mine. This is what they should do to each and every trombone in the universe. But instead of using dummies they should use the players.

  • @Platschheimer thats not nice, im a trombone player, and youre just an a**

  • @DevilChick64 :-)))

  • Why is there future in exploding trombones?

  • lololol... british narrator instead of the american one i wasn't expecting a new narrator

  • what is your name of the song?

  • @fubucejona Its the 1812 Overture

  • Is he goona play the tromboom?

  • you would not have time to remove your mouth from the mouthpiece. Of course everyone lubes their slide; however, the original story was that of a professional trombonist who would definitely have a well slicked slide

  • bad experiment, a trombonist would have his lips on the mouth piece, not allowing the pressure from the explosion to escape. I doubt the slide was sufficiently lubricated as a professional trombonists slide would be. If the mythbusters had covered the mouth piece and lubed the slide, they might had achieved different results

  • @magnetic200 I am almost positive that if an explosion ignited inside your trombone, you would promptly remove your face from the trombone....and most people lube their slides....not just pros

  • has anyone realized that the trombone parts for 1812 overture are NOT muted? myth busted.

  • @hookemhorns201 Trombone players are funny people so if they want an explosion like that they would put a mute in for fun.

  • @hookemhorns201 Have you realized that there are many different arrangements for that piece, one of which DOES use a mute?

  • @MrMichaelMadness sure, but why would the big grand ending be muted? there seems to be no reason for that to EVER be muted. unless the arranger is on crack. :]

  • Kdog it's called a spit valve

  • @kpwtpureynt0

its also called a water key lol i play trombone

  • those poor trombones!! T_T

  • Haha, they went to Best Music in Oakland for their trombones!

  • what was the symphonys name that they were playing

  • @Caswalle

    Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture

  • yeah, I wonder if the trombone slide would fly off if it was lubed up and in good alignment. Sometimes I want to blow up my trombone too...

  • I sympathise. So do I sometimes.

  • EXACTLY! or both no lubrication, OR back pressure...

  • not for me

  • omg i can't watch that... it's hell of a torture for every trombonist!!

  • @Killerfrog99

    yeah.. sure it is :(

  • poor Bustr

  • That's a nice trombone...

    -sniffle-

  • uhh, take it from a trombone player to tell u that slide's on backwards

  • thank you, i was about to say that

  • the trombone looks more like a Trombone Cannon more like, although the sound of the explosion in the second attempt sounded like a real Anti Tank Gun.

  • the Reason the slide didnt shot out, was that there was no Mouth Behind It... causing the back pressure

  • or, b/c it's a used trombone, and the slide could very well be dented....and i'll guarentee they didn't put any slide oil on it

  • @AznRabbitBMW sometimes they don't think of the most obvious things

  • 4:55 "THIS IS SPARTAAAAA!"

  • HAHAH oh, 1812 overture. i hated that piece so much but at least i didn't put explosives in my trombone.

and: 'hey, it still makes noise!' LOL adam.

  • how is this simphony or song called :D i want to have it ;DDD

  • "Well, actually we wanna blow it up." LOL He could have just said "We're the Mythbusters going to test a myth about trombones." and the guy would have known what they were about to do or would have said "Oh God get them outta here!"

  • according to a professional trombone player - mutes are meant to be destroyed

  • My two favorite lines in this episode

"....Woops...." from Jamie and *horrid noise from trombone as Jamie messes with it* "Hey, it still plays!" from Adam while in the middle of discussing the myth XD

  • what the fucks up with the aussie guy talking, where the other guys voice? hes a better one to listen too

  • Maybe because... THIS IS AN EARLIER EPISODE?!

  • Oh no scratch that. This clearly says that this was on "Beyond Tomorrow"

  • I don't believe that a true trombone player would ever abuse his instrument with an explosive, no matter how small.

  • they did have the slide on the wrong side and why did they have to kill those poor trombones?

  • There are a couple things that could have caused the slide to stay on: 1. the slide might not have been lubricated enough. 2. because there was no mouth or something blocking the end with the mouthpiece, the force of the air from the explosion went straight around the bend out the mouthpiece. If there was something blocking the exit of air, the air might have forced the slide off to escape.

  • 3. Although we all probably should, most trombonists don't point their instruments straight out, parallel to the ground. If the trombone were angled down, the forcefrom the explosion would have moved the slide enough to let gravity force it off.

  • But if you are trying to kill the conductor, you would want to aim, and bring the trombone to point at said target.

  • @jirachiwish2007 yes, beware the trombone of doom. and beware the trombonist using said intrument. thats all i have to say. im a trombonist too, dont get me wrong!

  • 4:55

    THIS

    IS

    SPARTAAAAA

    (sorry, had to do it)

  • It's

    OVER 9000!!!!!!

  • hey is still makes sound

  • the trombone is fixed wrongly

    haha

  • Did they ever revisit this one? It seems like they should plug the holes in their experiment. The mouthpiece doesn't need to just be covered, it needs to have enough air pressure applied to it to simulate the trombonist blowing.

    Bad mythbuster, no biscuit.

  • they forgot that the guy was playing the trobone and burnt his lips.

meaning that he was playing and aplying pressure to the slide.

so they need to cover the mouthpiece whole cus thats allowing gases to escape.

I set my tuba in fire during homecoming trust me

  • o_O how'd you do that?

  • at the begining in the chalk board they drew a trumpet not a trombone. The trombonist in the myth im sure had his slide gressed up and had his horn in working order

  • I don't think that this is actually busted. They don't have enough knowledge how to set up the trombone. The slide lock is on. See 3:57. Adam tries to pull the slide out with his fingers but it doesn't move.

  • The slide lock is not on, as the slide is fully extended. In order to lock the slide it would need to be position 1, it's shortest.

  • lol band nerds over the trombone. =P

Drum sets, sticks, etc. break too often. lol

  • @louster200 im proud to be a band nerd!

  • no slid o mix

  • Trombotine would be better

  • I disagree, I like slide o Mix the most.

  • Ok so, I also play trombone and did anyone think that it may be quite possible that the slide was greased improperly, dented or even locked? One of the trombones i own is a shit hole like that and it is very possible that the slide was dented, i know that it takes a heck of a lot to move my slide it is dented so badly. That may very well have been the case for that trombone.

  • i thought that too

  • one thing they messed up on was that the slide would have come of because the trombonist was having his lips causing a pressure buildup

  • :( POOR TROMBONE!!! ( sorry im a band nerd! )

  • Im a band nerd too I feel sorry for it.

  • Does it bother anyone else that they set up the slide on the wrong side?

  • me but thats the leftie way

  • Yet another reason I don't watch broadcast TV any more. Without providing a stand-in for the player, providing positive counter-pressure at the mouthpiece, they failed to replicate the conditions of the supposed "myth." I also wonder if the slide was properly lubricated and in playable condition for each and every try here. Utterly lame. But others have said that in the pages of comments before.

  • I SERIOUSLY doubt the myth is real. They used rocket fuel and the thing STILL held together.

What would you suggest they use btw? A normal firecraker wouldn't do a shit againts the metal alloy. It wouldn't split it open.

It's not like the trumbone would use an dynamite or an C4 when he wanted to add some bang to it.

  • When you design an experiment you are supposed to take care to reproduce as close to the original conditions as possible. Not applying positive air pressure to the mouthpiece radically changes the conditions.

Also, I wonder whether the cheap trombones they used weren't heavier guage metal than the one that might have started the myth? You can doubt what you like, I have doubts too.

My issue is that conditions weren't replicated. Without that it's just an excuse to blow shit up on TV.

  • because I play trombone, I feel sad because they didn't use a trumpet but I always love to see a big BANG!

  • As a trombone player...I died a little inside

but as a pyromaniac...That was Awesometatsicular!!

  • Well I don't know how well the slide was tested. If the slide is nice (like what any mucsician would have), then maybe that would change it, but I think they definitely proved the bell wouldn't peal back. The mute just comes out too easily.

  • One of the key things they missed, and I can't believe they didn't know this, is that the destructive potential of an explosion is always much greater when you have containment at the moment of detonation. Do I know this only because I was once given minimal bomb squad training?

With a mute on one end and a mouth on the other, you have just that, and the effect of even small charges will be much, much greater.

But all of this has been alluded to by other comments going back 2 years.

  • they use them in 'stan to startle the muslim bros!!

  • i hate american tv thats converted for brits god damn theifs its the same damn language y do you need the accent

    idiotic.

  • wats the song called they play at 4:48????

  • 1812 Overture

  • 1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky

  • i want to play the final trombone :)

  • To get the slide to fly out they should probably close the mouthpiece in order to simulate the trombonists' lips. leaving it open gives the pressure an egress point. As for the conductor, I would imagine there was a bit of surprised reflex involved in falling off the stage.

  • exactly what i was thinking. They didn't do the best the could they could have like plugged up the mouth peice to where the air pressure didn't shoot out of there then it would have launched the slide. try it with water its fun haha.

  • Shouldn't it be tromboner?

  • No. It shouldn't.

  • boner

  • boner

  • LIPS! WHAT ABOUT THE LIPS! ima shoot paper outa my trombone now!(yes i do play da trombone)

  • muy bueno ! gracias ,desde argentina.

  • your wrong. just plain wrong. and i bet ur a music teacher. lol.

  • yes i know what youre talking about. this bucnh off assholes put you -6 maybe because they are ignorants well indeed they are

  • its their money and their trombone, let them do what they want

  • NONE

I play trombone and this vid is crazy

  • to osterczyx

i was just thinking that exact thing.

if i was hit by a fast flying mute then i would be caught off guard and probably fall backwards.

  • aw cmon man, theyve dont much worse. they freakin wrecked a boon crane trying to catapuly buster

  • These guys just wanna blow sh*t up. To be more realistic, the mouthpiece should be plugged to simulate the player. Then the slide might fly off.

Also, if I was the conductor any object flying at me like that may cause me to jump into the audience, it wouldn't have to be a matter of pure physics.

The myth may well be more plausible than indicated... haha

  • poor buster

  • DONT WASTE A GOOD TROMBONE

  • Guy Fawkes (V for vendetta) can do better.

  • I have always wondered if i could do this with my trombone. I usually stick paper or a spit ball in the bell and shoot it at people but it would be awesome to shot fireworks out. I hate the fact that they used old and vintage trombones though.

  • Lol, they put the trombone together wrong.. :p

Plus, I agree with MMidoriMurasaki, they didn't really do the experiment realisticly.

  • Real people have muscles and reflexes.

  • that's expensive -- even if they bought used ones.

  • is that a bazooka???

  • dont ruin a perfectly good trombone!

  • ....why is the trombone assembled the wrong way? and why didn't they bother doing any slide care? plus, the trombonist would have his lips on the mouthpiece, while they have nothing to simulate that. as a trombonist myself, i must say that this episode was a disappointment )=

  • that poor trombone

  • THAT ROCKS!!!

  • how is the name of the clasy song played?

  • Like someone said, when the trombonist did it presumably, he was playing it. Meaning air being blown back from the explosion couldn't escape out of the mouthpiece forcing the slide to jump off. This time, the mouthpiece was open for air.

  • xD busters shirt was on fire xD!!!!!

  • ok 5 major things:

    1. The slide probably hasn't seen any oil, grease, or cream in years.

    2. The trombone was put together incorrectly.

    3. The trombonist's mouth would have covered the mouthpiece to prevent the gas from escaping.

    4. There's a 9/10 chance the slide was locked.

    5. The brass that the trombonist was using could have been a finer, thiner, stronger, or more durable in his trombone.

The Mythbusters have just been busted.

  • seriously. plus if he was playing that overture (or any fanfare) his airflow mustve played a factor in that

  • One word slide-o-mix. That slide was probably so dry it wouldn't have budged even if a train was pulling it.

  • :38... CLASSIC! look at his face! LOL!

  • I gotta say, the mouthpiece isn't covered so its easy for the gas to escape.

  • yah in the myth, there was a person playing it, covering up the mouth piece so air can't escape.

  • i love da first explosion

    its so awesome

  • trombone warfare.

    love it.

  • "hey it still makes noise"....no shit lol

  • professional trombones use a much softer brass in the bell to get a better tone. student trombones are considerably harder and more durable- - - if they used a rosebrass bell (which is often accidentally bent by mishandling), the bell would have been blown wide open.

  • You could have just asked a trombonist about this. He/she would have told you that there are no muted passages in 1812. The entire scenario is imaginary.

  • if u think about what they said what happend for real it would be just insteant reations that the conductor flew back in the audiance

  • I know that a lot of people say that the myth is not busted since the mouth piece isn't covered like it would be if somebody was actually playing it...but there's also the fact that there is no hand holding the slide either...

...but ya, they should really do this again with all the minor details revisited. The slide might not even have been greased, which makes them really hard to move at all

  • they did redo this, they had to weld the mouthpiece shut before the slide went anywhere. and they had to use a charge far too big for any firecracker to make it work. so ya, myth still busted.

  • Im pretty sure the slide dident come off because theres a place for the exposion to go to (through the mouth piece) but with the guy playing it theres not place for it to go.

  • what is this, like british mythbusters? hahaha i've seen this episode before. :]

  • what is the song of the background when they blow stuff?????

  • 1812 Overture - Tchaikovsky

  • thank man!!!

  • it burnt the guys lips right so he is sort of pluging one end of it they didn't plug it so it's still a myth

  • OMG idiots. the slide didn't come off because they left the slide lock on. TWITS. A violin would be a much better instrument to blow up anyway.

  • they make mistakes sometimes... they went and revisited it, they DID fire off the slide, but they had to use so much explosives that the myth was successfully busted AGAIN.

either way, i love this episode. it's another one of those images that jump into mind whenever i hear the 1812 overture, the other being old bailey exploding...

  • r they at allegro?

  • y couldnt they ahve blown up a trumpet insted. i mean, who really like the sound of those things

  • no you just need to blow up an oboe

    trumpets are a beautifule instruments

    oboes: reed em and weep

  • Trumpets are awesome! Oboes sound like very high pitched ducks.

  • agreed.

  • xD

LoL, I should ask my band director if we can try that.

  • oooh... I could never do something like that to MY Trombone! His name is Felipe.

  • Heyy i Play the Trombone...THATs CRUEL

  • i play the trombone too and i think it's funny if you hate your conductor

  • I just died a little bit inside.

  • boom goes the trombone

  • I think it's insane how the mute travels

    straight out of the bell.

  • bach trombones suck, yamaha are way better

  • thats wat i gots

  • Que besteirol. Apenas gasto de dinheiro e tempo.
