All of the PS2 launch games sucked but people crapped their pants because it could play DVD's. Dreamcast had very good games and had better ports than some shared with the PS2. It's only problem was that it came too late, but other than that the Live support was light years away than what the PS2 offered, since you didn't have to buy and adapter, something that the Dreamcast also came with. @VakomaNOVA It was only cancelled in America. In Japan, there was no Xbox version, and in Europe, both the Xbox and Dreamcast versions made it to the market.
PS2 was not only a DVD player, but also a PS1, so it actually had a bigger game library to begin with and in the end the PS2 was the platform with some of the most memorable titles of it's gen, while the Dreamcast had a couple good games, that now get praise, because of the platforms early demise. I now wait to be thumbed down for stating the obvious.
it's not that big a deal looool... the good PS2 game didn't came out until way after the dreamcast died, veru few things justified the purchase of the over expansive PS2 in its early years when the dreamcast proposed some of the most memorable games, not of the gen, but of all time, with Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Phantasy Star Online etc... was being overlooked....
not to mention the superior version of DOA2 on the Deamcast or the game had no aliasing, run mostly in 480p 60fps, where the PS2 kept it's low resolution and aliasing feature a lot (FF 12 and Shadow of the Colossus look horrible; years after the DC decline...)
so PS2 became memorable but not during the Dreamcast years, it was plain crap and over priced at this time... and Dreamcast games were indeed great, they aren't being over hyped in any ways....
After the Dreamcast died, the reaction of it's fanbase was to praise everything about it. Yeah, games like Shenmue were good, but they are far away from the masterpieces ppl pretend them to be unless walking around and asking sailors and enjoying the town with suprisingly low interactivity qualifies as that. I am not ignoring that it's artistic aproach to the story and cinematic scope was awesome, but ppl hype it out of nostalgia.
shenmue always got some of the best score in reviews the day of its release, it is a masterpiece, and it was ahead of its time, the PS2 had to wait a bit before proposing graphics as good
I agree, not to say that the Wii or the PS3 are poor choices, but the fact that the 360 plays console games and get's a lot of PC games make it a win for me.

Besides that the DC lacked EA support, because of the losses EA made on the Genesis, they withdrew their support, what followed (especially in the PAL region) were delays, cancellations and even removal of online features. What is a Unreal T good for, if you can't get online?

Here's the thing, as much as I loved the PS1, I always wanted a Dreamcast since hearing about it and seeing what it can do way back in 1999. But, I never really got myself to really ask and ask again for a Dreamcast back in the day so I missed out and I got the PS2.
10 years later however, I finally got the Dreamcast, pre-owned. And I'm in total love. As for the PS2, *sigh*...when will it be discontinued? xP
I see Dreamcast as a comparable parallel to the Neo Geo AES in terms of the arcade titles you can play at home (or your friend's if you are a leech :P), but unlike the latter you can play BOTH Capcom and SNK fighting games AND ALSO at a fraction of the cost (AND with minimal to no loading times - this we all have to hand it to the dedication of the staff of Sega Japan).
Sooo true! The Dreamcast was awesome!!! With many never seen before features and unrivaled graphics! Unfortunately, it was without taking Sony's merchandising power with their fake tech demo running on PC, game graphics being from FMV, etc... Results: many people waited for the PS2 only to discover a "not so great machine" with jagged graphics. And having to wait 6 months after release to finally get some good games while on the DC you had Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Virtua Tennis...
It was hard to keep up with the consoles since they costed so much and came out so frequently, I got a dreamcast and didn't get a ps1 till 2 years later, it is that good!
Dreamcast was so fucking good! I got mine a bit late because I was stupid during that generation of gaming and didn't invest in a lot of the good games of that time. I was actually busy playing catch up with the generation before that because I was born about the year the SNES came out and wanted to invest in some classic titles for the SNES and Genesis. Curse time.
the Dreamcast could've been so awesome :\ I think it was just bad decisions by SEGA, the console was great. you can compare that to the PS3 360, but this time around it's different, the 360 has much more chance to stay alive then the Dreamcast did, for instance, blu-rays are a over-rated, most games even the PS3 games are about 7GB, which fits in a Dual-Layer DVD easily. and the Graphics aren't much different, the DC had better textures but less polygon count.

I too have the Original package for my DC right here.
All i know is that it came out in Europe and Japan, but not in the US.
Or maybe you meant Shenmue 3? that one was indeed cancelled i think.

@VakomaNOVA It was only cancelled in America. In Japan, there was no Xbox version, and in Europe, both the Xbox and Dreamcast versions made it to the market.

Good point. Just proves that a game console is just meant for games. Sadly game consoles are starting to do what the cell-phones did nowadays.
Support the Wii and Xbox 360 to keep gaming the way its supposed to be! About playing games and nothing else!

PS2 was not only a DVD player, but also a PS1, so it actually had a bigger game library to begin with and in the end the PS2 was the platform with some of the most memorable titles of it's gen, while the Dreamcast had a couple good games, that now get praise, because of the platforms early demise. I now wait to be thumbed down for stating the obvious.

it's not that big a deal looool... the good PS2 game didn't came out until way after the dreamcast died, veru few things justified the purchase of the over expansive PS2 in its early years when the dreamcast proposed some of the most memorable games, not of the gen, but of all time, with Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Phantasy Star Online etc... was being overlooked....

not to mention the superior version of DOA2 on the Deamcast or the game had no aliasing, run mostly in 480p 60fps, where the PS2 kept it's low resolution and aliasing feature a lot (FF 12 and Shadow of the Colossus look horrible; years after the DC decline...)
so PS2 became memorable but not during the Dreamcast years, it was plain crap and over priced at this time... and Dreamcast games were indeed great, they aren't being over hyped in any ways....

After the Dreamcast died, the reaction of it's fanbase was to praise everything about it. Yeah, games like Shenmue were good, but they are far away from the masterpieces ppl pretend them to be unless walking around and asking sailors and enjoying the town with suprisingly low interactivity qualifies as that. I am not ignoring that it's artistic aproach to the story and cinematic scope was awesome, but ppl hype it out of nostalgia.

shenmue always got some of the best score in reviews the day of its release, it is a masterpiece, and it was ahead of its time, the PS2 had to wait a bit before proposing graphics as good

I agree, not to say that the Wii or the PS3 are poor choices, but the fact that the 360 plays console games and get's a lot of PC games make it a win for me.

Besides that the DC lacked EA support, because of the losses EA made on the Genesis, they withdrew their support, what followed (especially in the PAL region) were delays, cancellations and even removal of online features. What is a Unreal T good for, if you can't get online?
Btw, you speaking bad about Shadow of the Colossus proofs poor judgment imho. Games of Team ICO are probably among the most artistic and creative ones in last gen.

I say the game was bad ? no I said it looked bad...the framerate is like 15 fps, et textures are ugly and the aliasing makes it look like f*cking first playstation...
wait...Unreal Tournament came out for the PS2 as well, and didn't had Online Support, same for the version of QUAKE3 on the PS2...so your argument here doesn't stand...

Soul Calibur was Indeed a game unlike anything seen before in term of graphics, and it's gameplay made it one of the most played in tournament...but NO I guess you still think this is over hyped :)

If anything, Sony were too good at brainwashing people into buying the PS2.
Here's the thing, as much as I loved the PS1, I always wanted a Dreamcast since hearing about it and seeing what it can do way back in 1999. But, I never really got myself to really ask and ask again for a Dreamcast back in the day so I missed out and I got the PS2.
10 years later however, I finally got the Dreamcast, pre-owned. And I'm in total love. As for the PS2, *sigh*...when will it be discontinued? xP

I see Dreamcast as a comparable parallel to the Neo Geo AES in terms of the arcade titles you can play at home (or your friend's if you are a leech :P), but unlike the latter you can play BOTH Capcom and SNK fighting games AND ALSO at a fraction of the cost (AND with minimal to no loading times - this we all have to hand it to the dedication of the staff of Sega Japan).

Sooo true! The Dreamcast was awesome!!! With many never seen before features and unrivaled graphics! Unfortunately, it was without taking Sony's merchandising power with their fake tech demo running on PC, game graphics being from FMV, etc... Results: many people waited for the PS2 only to discover a "not so great machine" with jagged graphics. And having to wait 6 months after release to finally get some good games while on the DC you had Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Virtua Tennis...

It was hard to keep up with the consoles since they costed so much and came out so frequently, I got a dreamcast and didn't get a ps1 till 2 years later, it is that good!

Dreamcast was so fucking good! I got mine a bit late because I was stupid during that generation of gaming and didn't invest in a lot of the good games of that time. I was actually busy playing catch up with the generation before that because I was born about the year the SNES came out and wanted to invest in some classic titles for the SNES and Genesis. Curse time.

the Dreamcast could've been so awesome :\ I think it was just bad decisions by SEGA, the console was great. you can compare that to the PS3 360, but this time around it's different, the 360 has much more chance to stay alive then the Dreamcast did, for instance, blu-rays are a over-rated, most games even the PS3 games are about 7GB, which fits in a Dual-Layer DVD easily. and the Graphics aren't much different, the DC had better textures but less polygon count.

had both but played more ps2. I got them fairly late ~~ like the ps2 with ffx and dont remember when the dc but ya besides the fighting games I played nothing on it :3
