If one really wants to hear true Frampton Tone ck out Humble Pie Rockin the Fillmore Live Lp. You will even hear the lick at 2:00 in this track , where he originated it from in the HP's "I Don't Need No Doctor " Its about 3,30 into it.
Pretty much all of where Frampton's awesome leads and sound developed from this time period of the double live record.
Let me tell you something they were loud crunchy and honest musicians.
His screamin solo in Stone Cold Fever (live) says it all !
Someone commented w/o his original band it's not the same. Face it, none of us are the same! I saw Frampton in 76 and I saw him last week, part of his 67 city 2011 Tour. He is still one of the best guitarists of all time and he surrounds himself with talented folks. Those youngsters can flat-out play too!
I saw Peter last year after he lost all of his gear in the Nashville floods. It was weird, definately Frampton signature leads but the timbre was just not there. Plus, without Bob Mayo (and the other originals) it could never be the same no matter what.
The sound on Frampton Comes Alive is so damn good that even Peter Frampton has a hard time making it sound that good again at his shows nowdays. There are no words to describe the guitar in this track from 6:00 to 6:18.
@93534mike I LOVE this album because of the sound. To me it is simply one of the all time great live recordings. The energy of it is simply incredible. But yeah there is something to be said for good Ol tube amps and real cabinets. Frampton's sound is so unique. His guitar sounds unlike anyone else. Its a kind of watery wavery treble with chorus is how i would describe it. A great sound. But his amps and processing is all digital now wich is not the same. Close but different.
@tinian33 Yes i do believe you are right on that. But its also the way he mixes his Les Paul. You can read about it on his site but undoubtedly today's mixing is far different to the old analogue days. I LOVE the old days sounds of guitars. Something to be said for the raw REAL cabinet sound. I love this version of JJF!! I think Frampton rocked this up great. Its a very tricky drum beat too!! A bit Neil Peart-y!! Off time
That trademark Frampton tone at 5:18. His signature sound!!
Everyone has their opinion,And all are valid,But this was not meant to change the world,Not your world anyway,It was a last ditch effort to save peter's deal with A&M
After all,These tune's were all on previous studio's record's that did not produce the
Result's the label was looking for,This is called your hard work is starting to pay off
And the time was right,There's a lot of factor's involved,Peter's first grammy was a
couple of year's back, and his playing and writhing are amazing.
great player, great singer, great performer, total pro, very tasteful, nice guy, friends with all the greats, highly underestimated but not anymore.petes finally getting the credit he deserves. anybody remember when he covered while my guitar gently weeps???lying????this is a great version.doesn't sound like the same song.kinda funky.love it.thanx for the post.sorry bout the rambling but i believe what iv wrote.
I've heard many OD + chorus swirl lead sounds, but that lead solo sound that starts @ 6:00 is always going to be somewhere way up on my list of that particular FX category. Those few bars are both singing, swirling, & searing @ the same time. That COOL Sky Chorus. I do think there were Leslie cabs mixed in, if I read one 70's (GP or Modern Recording?) article about his stage setup right
I stood in a queue in a petrol station once with PF. Anyway, such a great song has to be brilliant whoever covers it you' d think. But no, truely indulgent version that misses the whole point though I guess a cover version of this was better than original material played (obnoxious comment, sorry, i know). PS sounds like Lou Reed's band from early 70s so not so bad perhaps)
@andrewstack5236 the only difference is that Peter wrote shit and doesn't has a good string of great albums unlike the stones....he only had this shitty "look at me i've sold a gazillion with a live record" kinda shit....the stones composed life changing classics such as gimme shelter and satisfaction, peter had commercial success but he's barely mentioned with the big ones....he's on the britney spears league, he sold millions but it means SHIT to people, respect the stones dickhole
@theachtungtree Then you sir are an idiot who knows nothing about music. Anyone can say the Rolling Stones are great because everyone who has listened to classic rock knows it... Most people who know things also know that Peter Frampton is fantastic as well.
@JustinTyme no, facts: peter is a has been while the stones are still relevant, the stones had a stream of great studio albums, peter is mostly known for a good live lp, almost any legend from that era had great live albums from grand funk railroad to zappa. fact: i know about music, check out my tastes,i dont have taylor swift, metallica's worst album and eminem on my favs unlike redundant dipshits like you. i rather listen to coltrane instead of whatever mtv shit youre into...pffff
@anawanstamp I agree but depends on your likes and preferences. If you love BIG guitar this song is AMAZING. If you want the Stones Blues.. not so much. ME? I love this version. the slow down and build up are brilliant.
The crossfire/chorus interplay between the Hammond B3 & his chorused axe make a fantastic soundwash from early on, but the MINDF'K'R lead guitar Sound from Heaven is from 6:01 to 6:19. Gives me goosebumps to this day.
A 70's issue of Live Recording shows that he was mixing yon axe with added Leslie cabs for that sound
Damn, I wish I had put down that lead!! One of the many great leads in RNR.
I like that he changed the structure of the song while keeping intact

@roquefortfiles Leslie cabinets is what gave Frampton that watery wavy sound. His solos all sound like works of art.

The Stones wrote it and Frampton fine tuned it. Hands down.
MrSlammeddown 11 months ago
Part of it must be the delay & shaping that comes only from playing in the space of a live hall, got to consider that.
No way to duplicate it - it has to be real air, space, & real cabs in a real hall.
