  • Thank you for sharing! Your locs are beautiful.

  • You have beautiful locks

  • Thank you so much. you've saved me so much money. Your method works better for sure.

  • I made 1 and I wish i would've watched this vid before I bought a latch hook! This method is so much better! The latch on the latch hook tends to constantly get caught in your loc and kinda rip and tear at the roots so this DIY loc tool eliminates that issue! Only beef I have with the DIY tool is the tape! I've used electric tape and clear packing tape on mine and it tends to slip while im interlocking my hair so I may try the masking tape!

  • You could also use that heat shrink (wire insulation) stuff to cover the metal...the tape makes me nervous, lol.

  • That was a great video. You made the process very simple to understand. Thank you so so so much.

  • how many locks do u have mrs

  • thanks so much, this really helped!

  • Good looking out.. I am going to try that, and post it on facebook.

  • I was thinking of trying something similar for the front and edges since they are thinner but I'm not sure yet...I think I'm going to just try palm-rolling only for a little while and then in a few years return to latching when necessary, etc. Great video! Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you for the how-to....I will be doing that technique for now on....thank u sista

  • yes yes, fantastically delicious hair but might I mention, what a wonderful place for a tattoo...leo...guessing??

  • have you ever tried latching with a crochet hook???

  • Yes and it hurts.

  • whoa, you're hot yo helpful vid as well

  • which is best twistin or interloc

  • beautiful locs!

  • ahh i see! thanks so much 4 the video. I've gotta a weird type of hair grain and 4 some reason my new growth doesnt like to lock. Its such a hastle beacuse one week after i get my hair done, my dreads began to look lose at the roots.. it just ticks me off! lol! But im definitely going 2 try this method out. thanks once again 4 spreading ur dread knowledge.

  • How many Dreads u have?

  • How would u prevent knotting from this method?

  • Wow...you are good! Very, Very helpful. Best DIY video I've seen on latching locks.Thanks.

  • Cool latch tool, I'll try that.

  • I try this method and everytime this tool gets caught in my hair...am I doing something wrong? Your video doesnt show exactly what you are doing cause of your head and finger movements!

  • Looks Fantastic! Thanks for the tip :D

  • new york girls r so sexy

  • hey what happens if you have a Y shape at the root of your dreads while you are latching. Will it be okay after it grows out or should I try to comb it out. Im a little worried about the two strands not growing together

  • Thank you

  • I twist the back and the sides but I latch hook the front to make my hair look neater. It does work:)

  • It never dawned on me to make my own tool, lol. Thanks for the vid : )

  • your locs are absolutely gorgeous

  • wow great idea!

  • Are you still palmrolling the front or have you started interlocking your whole head. My issue is I would like the front to remain neater but I don't want to change the look of my palmrolled locs.

  • Hey MsButterfli!

Just wondering, when you first started locking, did you palm roll or interlock. I have been trying to figure out what's best since I don't like the knotting that occurs when you interlock. Since seeing your vid, I figure out I must be doing something wrong cos the back of your hair doesn't look knotted, it looks very neat. Curious to know, how long does the interlocking process last and does it hurt when you get near your scalp?

  • O M G!!!! you are a life saver! MAy God bless you!

  • oh my god thank you for showing me how to make one of these on my own. i bought a tool similar for $50 on the net a year ago. Also im on the west coast california do you think you could show us some different NY styles and what type of products you use

  • I do this using a latch hook. Latch hooks are readily available at craft stores for just a few dollars. They are easier to hold than the tool suggested here and they let me interlock down close to the scalp. If you're not familiar with a latch hook google and you'll see what i'm talking about. We used them to make hook rugs when I was a kid.

    Happy Locing!

  • Thank you so much for posting this great video. I didnt know that the loc tool could be made so easily. I almost bought one tonight and that would have been foolish of me!!!! Your Locs are very nice!!! Bigg ups to you!!!

  • with the kids it is so much easier to latch my hair then to palm roll, I did palm roll before and the baby would cry I would have to wash my hands stop and then tend to her and then the older two would start. So interlocking is so much better and less time then palm rolling. Great tool. I paid $15 for mine from Nappy locs I should have done what you did

  • I interlocked my locs before, just a few2try it out but used a different tool. There's a beading tool2help put beads on the end of braids made of plastic& works well.Shaped the same as yours, just more flexible & very cheap.Beauty supply store may carry a long black one or packaged with beads.Simply use the pointed end instead of the loop2 put through the root and pull it out., u can get it closer & tighter to the root that way 2. Keep the videos coming...u do a great job& its informative.

  • Thank you soooo much. I was having a little trouble location a crochet needle that wasn't too small. I'm so grateful for this video. Now I don't have to be overcharged at the hairdressers.

  • Great VID

  • your hair is beautiful! i have found interlocking to be the best thing to do as far as maintenance is concerned. if i can give one suggestion if it hasn't been said...when you put the clip through the loose hair at the scalp, put just the end tip of the dread into the clip and pull it through.

  • that is so true when I started I would put half the dread in the tool and it was so hard to pull thru then when I just did the tip it went easy

  • Hey this idea was a great one. I have made a bunch of those things. Anyone got tips for the fat frizzy ends that remain after washing?

  • Girl your hair is ridiculously long. You look great! Thanks for the tutorial. You made it look alot easier than some other ppls tutorials. Good job.

  • ok one more questioning? So at this point I been twisting my hair with a locking firm wax, do I still need to use it? or there is no need too?

  • you look like india.arie beautiful...you are! Now back too what i wanted to say. so my brother got his done in queens NYC and paid 120 bucks. After seeing how this interlock is done. i believe I can do it myself. before my dreads I had braids for 17 yrs and masters to do it myself...and i am sure i can do this. i just have to buy the tool. Or I can make it like u did. But what is the name of the tool and where i can buy it!

  • Your right. I kept thinking "She looks like someone.." but coudnt place my finger on it. Even stranger is she sounds like India too. Ive met her a few times and even had some convo. & thats how her voice sounds. India Arie is very pretty in person too. So i hope this sista takes it as a compliment.

  • You're absolutely right! She is gorgeous! But, did you miss the first half of the vid or something? Because I'm pretty sure she just showed exactly how to make it yourself so you don't have to 'find and buy' it....

  • Yea I watched the whole vid...and I found it..I didnt want to use a paper clip...

  • thanks i never seen this method and i think this may be for me my dred are thin and starting to break because of the constant retwisting. im going to try this now and may be the only way i do it from now on thanks

  • nice locks, and thanks for the tutorial it was so helpful, i have seen healthy locks like yours just a few times, not many. and excuse my english..

  • when someone says im interlocking, what do they mean? what does it do?

  • wow, your hair looks healthy..compared to others with locs that look dry and itcchy :/

  • how many locs do you have?

  • Thanks for the tutorial, well done.

  • I'm so feeling this video, u go!!!

  • wow, the demo was VERY helpful, i was def lost till the demo haha thanx

  • Ditto. Thanx!

  • i just washed my hair after palm rolling for the first time a few weeks ago and it came down...grrr...i think im going back to latching using this tool...thanks

  • This helped me so much! I really didn't have time to get to the crafts store to get the latchhook. Thank you!

  • how often do you interloc your hair? it look so healthy...

    God bless you.

  • Hi girl, thank you for this video. I live in atlanta and its $100-$120 or more to get my roots interlock. I did it myself and it turn out great. One question, i noticed that my hair is very frizzy, do you have any suggestion, to help.

keep the videos coming great job. look forward to your reply

  • Im growing my hair right now and plan on getting locks in May, how often do youhave to go back and get them retouched since your able to do this on your own? Thanks

  • Great video !!! I am an older woman and have gobs of fine gray hair. I use to look when my hair was more coarse ( black). My head was shaved as a result of an initiation I underwent. Now the hair that grew back is very difficult to lock and I don't want a lot of goo in my hair. Can I START locking by latching? Thanks!

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I tried using a latch hook, and I liked it, but I ended up accidentally grabbing hair from a different lock. I'm going to try making your tool right now. I love how your tool can be made of things that I have around the house.

  • just got locks and wanted to say thanks this is going to be extremely helpful in about a month.

  • it cost JA$2000.00to do it at the hair dresser thats like US$25.00 so i'll be savin and i'll go to her for like periodic maintainance or when soething goes wrong! lol!!! thanks hon.

  • hey girl guess wat??? a month ago i got so worked up and went and bought a latcher and tried to use it wen i got home but found that it wasnt working so i thru it down. but yesterday i saw a vid that did the latching in slow motion and i thout to try again and i did my whole headby myself i can do this by myself now yeah!!

  • goooood job can this work for sister locs too?

  • i dont think you can

  • wow. yours are so neat and down rooted. how'd you get it like this?

  • This is the best time and money saving thing I have ever seen!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

  • Those are the best female locs i've seen so far, the roots are so tight all the way down, thats how i want mines done

  • I interlocked b4 I washed my hair and I did a few over after I towel dried my hair a bit. I found that the interlocking works best when my hair is a little damp. I love the way my hair came out...Thanx for posting the video!

    You're hair is beautiful sis!

  • You are a life saver!!!!! I got so inspired after watching your video! I have been trying to learn how to take care of my hair myself and have been pretty unsuccessful. The hairdresser I used to go to suggested interlocking my hair, but told me the prices started at $150...STARTED at $150! SO...I got my paper clips from Duane Reade...didn't have ne masking tape, so I used packing tape...and I got a perfect doo-hickey tool to interlock my hair.

  • Thank you for this WONDERFUL tutorial! It was perfect, and your locs are FIERCE!

  • true

  • I think in your video you said your from NY I wanted to know where did you get your dreads started at.Because they look really good. And I wanted to start my Dreads off soon. If any suggestions or advise please feel free thanks.

  • how many inches would you say are your parts? BTW, your locs are fabulous

  • Wow! Your hair is perfect. What size are your parts and how lond have you had your locs?

  • cool vid. it's just the same with a latch hook ($2-$5 at wal-mart or michael's). i do mine every couple of months

  • i like how your improvised and made up the tool. real helpful when you don't have one available. i interlock my (and my kids) hair with no tool and it takes FOREVER.

  • Does it matter which direction you interloc?

  • I mean, do you follow a pattern of which directions you interloc?

  • how long have u been growin your locks and how often do u latch hook your hair MsButterfli

  • I wanna thank you for this video. I started latching my hair last night using this very tool. I am sooooo pleased. I have been loc'ing now for 4 months and usually have to retwist every 2 weeks. I work out too so the twist method would unravel because of the perspiration. This is so much better. Thank you again.

  • Hey girl,

Thank you so much for the info. I started using a crochet needle to use the same process on my mother's hair. It looks the same. Is it? Well since I have been tightening it.. we love it. She can wash it more without the roots loosening up. This is also great on baby locks (or as my grandma says, Mink titties) this is a good method. Less products for sure.

  • Sista i've just started my dread(2 months ago)should i try tighting it before it actually lock? Thank you!

  • lol i almost ordered one of those too but glad i didnt lol. glad it works for u

  • Thanks for this girl! I believe your technique could be used to start locks as well as keeping them re-twisting as you've shown. Your illustrations were great! And you did a great job! VDivine

  • you are very welcome :)

  • u have beautiful locs;)

  • thanx :)

  • OKay...i'm slow. I can't get this....I put the tool through, then thread my locs in, then pull the tool through???

  • ok so you palm roll the front and latch the back? Is this something you do on a reg? I have been latching for 6 mos I switched from palmrolling because it didnt last? new growth after like 2 weeks? didnt know you could combine the two methods? oh btw, you are the baddest! Your makeup vids are BADD your hair vids are BADD! YOU inspired me to start wearing makeup again?
