The whaler swerves toward it to get in water cannon range. Both sides are engaged in combat. But the Ady skipper made a fatal error to power ahead. He thought the whaler had put its helm hard right, which would make it pass astern of him, without immediately reversing rudder to the left as it did. He misread the maneuver.

@astuc8 the boat was in trouble and the captain of the ship couldn't get out of the way. hence the crew being on the "deck" of the small ship at the time of the collision.
The Jap ship clearly steered right into the AG then quickly steered away.
