6:17 onward - when it switches to the different tone, that part was amazing in the movie, and contrasted what was happening on the screen beautifully. I think it was when he hit is absolute worst moment.
@737bigred it may have been the time when he has an orgasm, but all you see on his face is agony. An incredible performance btw, and the films master shot.
Fassbender has been confirmed to star in Ridley Scott's next film "The Counselor" with an original script written by Cormac McCarthy. The story revolves around a lawyer who gets involved in a drug operation.
@EmeraldSuede You cant say he deserved an oscar, its not that easy - u gotta watch the other performaces of the year. but he should have got a nomination
The Oscars proved to be a farce once again. Michael Shannon and Fassbender deserved best actor nominations, Albert Brooks and Patton Oswalt deserved best supporting actor noms, and Dunst deserved one for Melancholia.
This, Drive and Take Shelter had better music/scores than the movies nominated. Anything that's not mediocre or feel good gets left out typically. Most awards are bought by the movie studios(it can be 10 to 25 million to run a successful campaign for best pictures.)
Take Shelter blew me away. After the film I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. I almost wish Shame had alluded to what had happened to them as kids to royally mess them up. But if you enjoy Shannon on Boardwalk Empire, you'll love him in Take Shelter.
The score is also amazing... it's on youtube under David Wingo Take Shelter. Storm Shelter and At the Beach are my favorite songs. Simple but heartfelt.
@TexasPsychoK Awesome. I'm looking forward to it. I like David Wingo's music, particularly for the film "Snow Angels" with Sam Rockwell. Thanks for the music info.
@TexasPsychoK u could'nt mean that, if you had actually been listening to the other movies scores. Ludovic Bource did a very good job . you should have more respect then to call it "mediocre"
Happily, I hadn't seen the Thin Red Line before seeing Shame, but yes ,Escott's music is completely modelled on Zimmer's, though what I find interesting is how Escott darkens the mood by making just a few small but very telling changes to the 'orginal'. Wonderful film anyway, and the music is essential to its power.
@THEJFD6 This film was shut out at the Oscars because it does not fit the mold of being an "Oscar friendly" film, evidenced by the films nominated this year for best picture. I have a hunch many of the academy members saw some of themselves in Brandon, his sister, or even Brandon's lame boss. It's definitely an uncomfortable and realistic film to watch, which is what makes it a masterpiece to me.
@MrSizemore7 My brother said almost exactly the same thing bout why it didn't any recognition even though it is top 3 in the best films of 2011! He said it's because of the subject matter and it being so intense. I personally think it may be that some just don't know how to handle a film of this magnitude and level in a way and I think it's unfortunate because when you can really see it like the rest of us, it's so beautiful and breathtaking.
The new generation of music composers is rising, what with Escott and Cliff Martinez. And with directors like Duncan Jones or Nikolas Refn the future of cinema looks bright indeed.
This is such an emotional music, when this was playing i couldn't take my eye of the screen, it was cross cutting between the present and past. Michael's character was going through all this shameful stuff.. it was sad to watch... This music just makes me think about life... and ask myself the question is anything worth it?. It was just pure amazing film-making.
Ah HA! I was right. A shameless (hahaha look at me I'm so clever) ripoff of "Journey to the Line". A piece written by Hans Zimmer for "The Thin Red Line OST".
I just wanted to hold him and tell him everything will be okay and that he'll get the help he needs. This films hits you like a truck, I hope he gets an award in the mainstream awards, he deserves it.
the movie stunned me. the movie, the story, I wanted to hold him and tell him he was going to be okay, he would find true love one day and be past the darkness.
i dont think its a rip off. journey to the line has backing strings that give it a different type of ambience to the whole piece, whit this has the occasional bang to give it some kind of beat. as to the whole percussive ticking, i always thought that while used in the film, the tapping was supposed to represent masturbation.
@gleek200 I absolutely love your idea. I haven't watched the film yet, as much as I want to, but I would have never thought of the tapping as a representation of masturbation. It would, of course, correspond to the feeling of the movie, as you can hear a resonance and emptiness to each tap. I really love your idea, thank you so much for sharing it.
"Very similar in style, tone, and rhythm Hans Zimmer's "Journey to the Line." "
-LOL. It's practically the same damn song down to the ticking clock at the start. It begins the crescendo at the same time and then has the same gradual fade. It IS the same song. Escott must be the Puff Daddy of cinematic instrumental scores.
re the zimmer question, the arrangement was well done but i find it surprising that a filmaker like Steve Mcqueen who prides himself on artisitc originality would include an obvious ripp-off like that without crediting the original track
This film is so shocking.

incredible story, phenomenal acting, brilliant directing , and a score that propels the emotional weight of the film.

You're absolutely right. Composers have been ripping off Zimmer since the 90's. Even Magnolia has a theme that rips off Journey to the Line.
