I actually did some research and on Billy's website he says that he had broken his ankle which left him sidelined so Steve Moved Kenny temp on Bass but decided he liked that lineup to be permanent. so they parted on the best of terms.

Did steve explain why the band shortened? Did Billy Pederson ( bass) quit? I know that Norton Pa. ssed away

No, I don't think he did say much about that, other than mentioning Norton's passing. I suspect he was doing a Steve Miller "lite" version, which is easier to take on tour and costs less (so he makes more money that way). Maybe that's crass, but economics of touring is why a lot of acts go with a scaled down (or even solo) tour contingent. jd
