they're honorifics. in japanese you should put an honorific with everyone's name, it's rare even for couples not to use them. -chan is an unformal title you use for a friend but it can also be used for children and animals - things you find endearing. -kun is similar but used only for boys.

Yeah, exactly what cxssard said. It's very rare not to use an honorific with someone's name. It can be very disrespectful to do it with a stranger. -san and -senpai are another couple that are commonly used meaning that they are wiser or higher up than you, usually.

-sama is more respectful than -san and -dono (came from -tono, which means lord) shows upmost respect, greater than - sama.

If a honorific isn't used, it shows a great deal of intimacy and closeness, such as in families or very intimate relatonships. If a stranger says a name without an honorific, its a huge insult.
