  • Don seems to have set the standard for steel playing and why not he was the best and he played for the greatest Hank Williams God bless Hank and his drifting cowboys

  • I thought I'd pass this along.......if you enjoy steel picking find David Hartley on YouTube and listen to him play. He has about 50 videos on YouTube and won't be hard to find. Be sure and listen to him playing "Sing me Back Home" and you'll hear him capture the same "soul" of this piece the way Hag did.

  • meet them all at a show at the old south jamboree in walker La. step mom got off with autograph picture have to check on it. my dad took me I was just a kid. r.i.p. Marion finney & drifting cowboys. I play music and they all were a big influence that changed my life.

  • I learned Don's style first when I started playing steel and when I finally met him years later I found out what a great person he was! John

  • beautiful

  • KING OF STEEL!! The haunting sound will live forever! Say hi to Hank!

  • I get goosebumps listening to that eerie steel guitar playing RIP Mr Helms and thank you for all the beautiful music you left us

  • To me, THE best. Loved that sound first and every time I hear it.

Glad he knew how much his playing mattered to us all.

  • Don Helms was a great steel guitarist. I loved his stories about Hank Williams and hearing him play Hank's songs at steel guitar shows. He was a friend of mine. I played a steel guitar show with him two years ago in Nashville and his set was right after mine. He's a steel guitar legend and I loved his Gibson Console Grande steel guitar. He made it sound incredible!

  • Rest well Don. God bless you sir.

  • RIP Don. Such a sad loss for Country music.

  • Rest easy Don.

  • I met and interviewed another member of the Drifting Cowboys... Bernice Turner, a couple of years ago at the BB King Museum Groundbreaking in Indianola, MS.

  • Indeed it's Head Steel!

  • Certainly not the last Drifting Cowboy. My friend played steel for Hank before Don and he is still around and playing as well.

  • What a great guy Don is...I had the chance to spend the weekend with hin in Birmingham a few months ago, A true gentleman..

  • In a word, Beautiful! You can just hear all the years come flowing back through his solid country gold stringed steel guitar. The timeless tune sounds even more touching to the soul and inspiring played with reverence a half century later. Long live the music of Don, Hank, and all the drifters!

  • Mr. Helms is a National Treasure! What a great ambassador for the steel guitar.

  • It touches my soul......so authentic.....God bless him!!!

  • I am proud to call Don Helms a friend and inspiration.

From your biggest fan in Missouri Don.
