  • This song is one of the only REAL CLASSICS of the poor old 80ies.

  • Wow alison moyet looks better way better now than she did in the 80's

  • Saba ...only you xoxox

  • best song ever!

  • I wish I could get this sound with a soft synth

  • synthesisers were great in the early 80s - perfectly good on this song!

  • What's that supposed to mean Amanda? Synthesiser is a musical instrument as any other. You're prejudiced. Do you want to say that guitar is the only "good sounding" instrument? Think about what you're saying. Don't jump before you look. Is a box of cookies an instrument? Yes! Music is not bound by instruments or prejudice.

  • Music is not bound by instruments? What a stupid thing to say. and by the way its an opinion that synthesisers are shit, you bigoted cretin

  • Did we, as a species, ever think a synthesizer sounded good?

  • uh......, my species did.

  • Best Yazoo song. Thanx.

  • i wanna cut his bloody fringe! i hope he doesnt drive a car coz theyre`d be bodies everywhere! lol

  • crazy this is how i feel now

    beautiful song

  • This song was always a fave of mine, and then in The Office Xmas Special at the end....oh I cried my eyes out!

  • i loved this song.i thought i coud i could sing it.alison moyet is a soul queen.i wish shed be allowed to sing today.her voice wud win hands down.

  • Though this, the original, version of 'Only You' is amazing, I still find The Flying Pickets cover better.

As they used no instruments but their own voices, the song appears more 'raw', more emotional, more mature, and less pop-ish.

  • The Flying Pickets suck. This original is a strong contender for the best pop song of the 80s.

  • What on earth was Vince Clarke thinking of, forming Erasure? The mind boggles.

  • Makes me think of Dawn and Tim.

  • The band And One has recently done a great live cover of this song (on their Bodypop 1 1/2 album)... FYI.

  • The first time I heard this song I remember it made me cry so much. :(

  • This is one of those rare 80's hits, and it reminds me of the chocolate war

  • Yes! The Chocolate War was my first exposure to the song. The movie was shown in my high school English class in 1988 after we'd all read the book. Loved this song ever since.

  • Ah, reminds me of my mum. Mum, I love you and I miss you so much. xxxx

  • guilty pleasures,..just a great song,nice lyrics..and Moyets voice is beautiful..

  • Incredible ! I know this song so much at some cover versions... but I never knew that original vas wrote by Vince Clark and that it could be hit of Depeche Mode (if they didn't refuse it.... just that idea - incredible)

  • The Office - Christmas Special

    Good times

  • word.

  • Beautiful song, sounds a lot like a male vocalist on the recording.

  • I first heard this on an AM station through the static. It was beautiful. I had to seek out the group. After a year, I got the vinyl record and played it to death.

  • Through the static. That's saying a helluva lot. Nice story.

  • this song means so much to so many people including myself it makes you think of your loved ones when you least expect it. I know it mean so much to my cousin and her husband when only you was played while my cousin was lead down the aisle by my uncle it fitted right in that special moment it was a special moment that I won't forget ever. I just wish my nan was alive to see this special day but I felt she was there in spirit though I miss her greatly though so so much

  • Hi!Our first song,Brought some tears of joy! Thx

  • Napoleon Dynamite

    luv it

    :D

  • my god, we sing this song in choir ! and it's first time i hear original verrsion. wow. ;D

  • Tim and Dawn from The Office

  • I cry like a little girl every time I see that.

  • I only have to hear the intro and I'm girnin my eyes out!

  • perfectly!

  • Alison sings so well, and Vince was soooo hot!

  • Her voice as it was is a pure legend!!

  • That keyboard is a Roland what?

  • Rat.

  • my first love song dance, with a girl called tracy from aloa in scotland lol loved that time so much

  • i love this song but i didn't know it was a woman singing.

  • What can i say- androdyny in both appearance and voice was all the rage back then. Pretty cool trend though.

  • That's funny... I was thinking the same thing when I was watching the video.

  • SHE COMES FROM BASILDON UK, i LIVE IN ESSEX SHE'S OURS!

  • Is that the first time you have said that in a proud way ;) ?

  • And a fairly attractive one at that.. Threw me for a loop when I was lloking for this song on here.

  • love this song because its the song in the movie cant hardly wait (while their kissing)

  • yup!!! =)

  • Covered by The Flying Pickets in 1983 and got to No.1, yet the original only got to No.2 in 1982, the singles charts were very strange in those days.

  • Great Song, Gettings from Chile!

  • Numan would be proud of the synth

  • the voice giving us the cause forever and forever!!!!

  • OMG haven't heard that on da radio for ages now

  • is it the original singer? or from who is this song really?

  • 1982 Original by Yazoo (Vince Clarke und Alison Moyet), 1984 coverd by Flying Pickets

  • oh god i love this so much it makes me cry.

  • I have to be honest on two counts - 1) what a fantastic song and 2) I really want Vince's jacket (and it's probably about the right size!)

  • so good..

  • Pure classic...and my fave by Yazoo..!!

  • Ony you....... my love...D....

  • Outstanding!

  • Vince Clarke is a genius. He's the third great composer after Lennon and McCartney-))))

  • You could not possibly find a finer or more iconic example of two musicians who are joined so intimately by nothing more than their music. Vince Clarke wrote the song and looked for someone to sing it better than he. Enter Alison Moyet and they formed Yazoo. Not many bands form around an already written and original song. And boy, how pleased I am that it happened. My youth wouldn't be my youth without this song :) It is also pure joy to see it here.

    Thanks Vince and thanks Alison!

  • this song never ceases to amaze me

  • oh wow If only music could be 10% as cool as this these days??? :(

  • This song makes me sooo happy! I dont think the melody could be any better! The 1999 remix moves me even more!!

  • hi! where can i find this 1999 remix?

  • i just watched a chinese movie called Fallen Angels" this song was in it numorous times.

  • I had no idea it was Alison Moyet.

    Lovely Song

  • I had no idea that it was Alison Moyett.

    Lovely song

  • This is a classic song and Enrique Iglesias does a good version too.

  • they were awesome =( i cannot believe my dad chucked out their CD. boo

  • my days in private schools. and the friends i thought i had.

  • this piece of musical artwork is everlasting and will remain relevant for many decades to come

  • hahaha had my 1st open mouthed kiss 2 this at a school disco and i was only 9 lol

  • True 80s..

  • Is this a one hit wonder? usually those are the best

  • Hardly...

  • i miss the old days

  • i heard this song on a add and i havent been able to get it out of my head! its so good! and my new fav! i love it :) thats my storey

  • LOVE U XXX

  • all I needed was the love you gave ... all i needed for another day. AND ALL I EVER KNEW ... Only you.

  • God i miss the 80's! take me back there just one more time!!!

  • LOVE IT!

  • im 18 and fucking love dis tune

  • i love this song

    it makes me cry

  • never gets old

  • The person who posted this is mistaken. There is indeed a video for this song. It has a bunch of manequinns in it, but there is a video. It's been on VH1 classic, I'm positive!

  • The video was for the re-release. There was not a video for Only You at the time.

  • Thanks for sharing this video

  • i am trying to work out what synth that is. I think its Juno 60?

  • great song!

  • "Only You" very often covered was written by Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure) for Depeche Mode.

After presenting the Demo at the London Blackwing-Studios (1981?) Vince had a Cigarette Break. After the break Dave Gahan told him, that they wont record this song. So he used it for Yazoo in 1982.

  • How could you jeremyud! This WAS a huge hit, got to number 2 and floated 'round the charts for eons. Astute point Soklapptdasnie. When we have accountants 'cum lawyers upping the Anti to the masses seizing what has been in the public domain for years what is, to use the cliche, the International language for conglomorations driven by self-perpetuating Greed as by now most artists have long since left their contracts and will receive bugger all royalties anyway! Alas, a sorry state of affairs.

  • Amen to that. Money makes the world go round, but music is the life and soul of the world, to which there can be no price tag.

  • Well put! I couldn't agree more. Sorry, sorry, & sad it is...

  • :) :)

  • the 90s verson got to number 1

  • this is such a good song.

  • Great song indeed

  • I don't get why this was muted. It's not like this was a huge hit back in its day...I kinda thought it was indie.

  • it's not mute for me, I can perfectly hear the song!

  • This was a HUGE hit in its days. I bought the album Upstairs at Eric´s as soon as I could, after hearing, foremost, Don´t Go and this lyrical masterpiece.

  • I think that "mute" might refer to the name of the record company or promoter. Not like You Tube "mutes" videos based on copyright claims.

  • As with the other post, this hasn't been muted. 'Mute' was a very influential UK record label, and the lead in is a little long so you do hear the track.

  • Back in its day Only You was a hugeeeeee hit.. The most recognizable with Yazoo..

  • Why don't the record companies give it up? They're never going to win. It must cost them thousands to trawl YouTube all the time and remove songs. Listen up: music is now part of the Global Commons, and you suits are still living an era of private property.

  • "mute" is the name of the record label you fucking schmendrick.

Otherwise, i agree with everything you said.

  • Your point is right, but not about this track. Mute here refers to the record label - let it play and you'll hear the song.

  • Because of the stupid copywrite trends sweeping a lot of the music videos on YouTube, this is one of the few links that have the song without the music being muted, thank god theres still one about cos i adore this song

  • Your point about the internet and music rights is valid, however in this instance 'Mute' refers to the record label. Let the lead-in play and you'll hear the song.

  • i love this song :)

  • me too :)

  • i love this song :)

  • good memories :)

  • great song what a voice

  • This takes me back to my youth again. Fantastic voice.

  • this is by far. one of my fav songs ever...

  • thanks for the video! does anyone know why this particular clip wasn't a part of the DVD on the recently released box set?

  • probably because some LAZY people at Mute didn't feel like doing their homework. there's also a video of "Don't Go" very similar to this live vocal performance.

  • I love this song and alison moyet as she sings it beautifully xxx

  • amazing. :)

  • What I really LOVE about this song is it's just Vince and Moyet. Proof that techno can be good with decent writing and talent.

  • Wish I had a copy of this video to play on my video night.. I love this song so much :D

  • superb .. thanks for sharing ! top draw synths vince

  • I wish it was 1982
