I've always loved Mel Torme and George Shearing. I will say that if you love scat like I do, you have got to look up Rene Marie's Bolero/Suzanne. She SCATS Bolero. A very worthy successor to Mel. Yes Mel and George are awesome musicians, and just happy to hear some new musicians stepping up to the plate.
Probably the finest combination of jazz piano and singer that ever was. Shearing, always quoting some little phrase from classical music, and Torme, who could scat sing the phone book and make it fun to hear. I miss them both. We'll never see their like again.

I was in New Orleans back in the 80's....and George Sheaing...Mel Torme...and Ella Fritzgarald at the OH damn...what was the name of the of that Hotel......I think it was called the Mark. OH how we miss him....such a vocie. I also miss Robert Perston...the music man....and Victor Victory.......he is really missed.
Sadly for us, both were mortal and are resting now. Thanks for this series. This was where I needed to go tonight upon hearing the news of George's passing.....
Melvin Howard Torme (immigrant Russian Jewish born Chicago) and Sir George Shearing (born blind, Battersea, London) - both now sadly deceased. Timing and phrasing to perfection. 10 great minutes thanks.
I have listened to several of Torme's Star Dust Youtube performances. Each one is slightly different. This one is a treat to see George Shearing accompanying him. My eyes are misty. What gut-wrenching intensity.
I never latched on to the composition Startdust until now. Wow. He maintains an intensity with every every turn. There is not one moment that I see where he uses time between statements to transition from one intense phrase to another. It is just one continous stream of improvisational intensity from start to finish. His subconcious has definately taken over on this one.
Mel's the original music computer....a human version....he's ridiculously talented......a singdrumbigbandbasspianomaestro....+ killer arranger.....it's always new to me.......hellooooooooooo
Two of jazz imortals. Shearing and Torme . I was always amazed at Torme's mastery of pitch. I listened to a verbal biography by him and he talked about how he use to dream in five and six part harmony. No jive! Every time I listen to the man that dream statement comes alive. Thanks for posting this.
Elegant, nay brilliant, vocal/chordal lesson in the progression from and intimate connection of classical baroque to jazz/scat with some hollywood musical flags along the way.
Mel deserved all of the praise he gets here, for his professionalism, class, music-making, unequaled scatting, combining B'way and jazz. He was truly a singer's singer.
This is the personification of ' Real Talent' !!! .,only Ella joins him in this exalted company !!. Torme in my opinion is one of the greatest musicion singers of all time and sadly his subtle interpretation is not appreciated by the young consumer of 'popular musical culture' who are saturated by the bombardment of clever marketing which is directed towards the young and impressionable . The ' modern Music Industry' rules the minds and tastes of the young generation !
It's the MUSICAL quality, that has gone down. The rap-singers are story-tellers (only faster and more banal in content) like the singers of more than 2 000 years ago.
@tappytoto1 I wholly agree with you, Torme is superbly gifted and similarly I feel shamefully underrated within the genre of the great American song book. The combination of both he and Shearing is akin to fine chamber music within the jazz idiom.
When I listen to Mel Thorme, I always end up laughing, can´t help it, this guy really delivers.

When they start the second half of Stardust at about the 6'-20" mark, the next 3 minutes are some of the most mind blowing music I've ever heard!
