  • pilesOG-Naaaaah,np,..I only get mad when people refuse to spell "you",and put "u" instead. The English language is going to hell,.....HeHe,..

  • shout out to The Wire for this song

  • hahahahaha love it!

  • He was the black sheep. A permanent pariah. He asked no quarter of the bosses and none was given. He learned no lessons. He acknowledged no mistakes. He was as stubborn a Mick as ever stumbled out of the northeast parishes to take a patrolman shield. He brooked no authority. He did what he wanted to do and he said what he wanted to say. In the end, he gave you the clearances. He was natural PO-lice.

  • @IDF1987 And Idont give that one up lightly, even when they're lying on the table....

    Play the FUCKIN SONG!!!!!!

  • a tribute beyond compare, to a people who took their oppurtunities despite hatred from others. Irish didnt cry, irish who used their brains and brawn, to this day the greatest struggle agianst a foriegn and WHITE aggresor, a piece of inconsequentioal shit, the irish will never give up on this small 6 county piece. despite american libberals and conservatives, irish true will always advance the cause.

  • Oh,..what I meant was that Native Americans are discriminated against in the US,as well as other people,so it would be rather hypocritical of me to speak like a racist. Also,ya know, its a racist thing to call someone a Cracker too.Just sayin,..

  • @ChimeraAZ yeah i am one that was irony of saying cracker. well said though I'm glad you didn't get mad like most people do if you reply to their comment.

  • andersonnonono -and just where did your feeble little brain pick up on my being a racist?be interesting if you could tell me.Lol! Not a word about anyone's race in there, other than Shane's Nationality.LOL! We ALL know that Shane is of Irish blood, that has never been the question. It's always does he claim to be Irish or English in NATIONALITY. To be a racist,I would have had to diss him for being born of Irish blood, which I didnt. How funny! Me,a racist.I'm part Native American.

  • @ChimeraAZ I agree you did not say anything racist but how does being native american mean you cannot be racist? Kinda annoying for crackers that only they can be racist. Irish people some of the whitest and most discriminated just saying....

  • @pilesOG because all the other gowls are a buncha cunts

  • STOP,STOP,STOP it! Jesus.Who cares where he lived when he was 6,or where he went to school first,or second.Or if he is Irish or English. He is what he is,..Brilliant! All we should care about is that he gives us a massive amount of great music to listen to and love, and a great personality to enjoy to boot. And I pray that Shane will be in the world for a long time. It will be somewhat diminished when he leaves it.God,I love this song!! HeeHee!!

  • @ChimeraAZ +you racist

  • your lyriv=cs are wrong but fuck it im shitfzced, erin go brah

  • the wire :)

  • filthy08 I love that you took time to write all the lyrics down: thanks :)

  • Great song!!!

  • One of the most patriotic American songs ever...and it was written by an English band about a dead Irish boxer. Go figure.

  • @Trinity61 A child looking for a reaction no doubt so shame on me for bothering, but English band??? And what Irish boxer my delusional friend?? I know I'm going to get 'born in England' but ask Shane McGowan his nationality... You've claimed enough other nationalities from Linford Christie to Frank Bruno so back off. We didn't all get to choose where we were born Mr Empire.

  • @TommyKeegan McGowan has spent most of his life in London. The band came up on the London pub live scene of the 80ties.So the person that said English band,is a wee bit right.Even if most are Irish, playing there Irish music. With a bit of punk rock thrown into it.And that is there down to London, and what was happening there when they were young. And I am not English or Irish.I am Scottish and a big Pogues fan.Love there music and love them live, they are total grade A legands.U know its Xmas way em.

  • @legandrydirk actually the band lived in london only 5 years and he is 60 something now.its an irish band.just cause the were in london doesnt make em english.ask shane mcgowan if his english and youd get a bottle in the face

  • @leontrotsky911 shane is 54 now not 60 something, jesus and the internet is right at your fingertips.

  • @legandrydirk he lived in ireland most of there lifes.the spent only 5 years in london and there all about 60 something.they still live in ireland cause its there home.tell shane mcgowen his british and watch that bottle break ur face so good luck to ya

  • @leontrotsky911 Your wrong he even speaks with a London accent. Most of his adult life was spent in London. Why would I call him British anyway?London is were the money is.And that is why he choose to stay there. What Irish person do you know, that talks like he does? The only ones who do,have been staying here over 20 years. And for such a big Celtic fan.He does not go to many games.I know a guy that sits behind, were McGowan hss his seat. And he says that he is hardly ever there.

  • @Trinity61 its an irish band from ireland......wow

  • i want this song to be played at my funeral while i'm lying in a pool table

    :D

  • @fede018

me too. thats a srsly epic way to be the dead man at a party!

  • who was jim dwyer???

  • The Wire has a lot of culture in its series. Irish, Greek, English, American, Afro-American, Polish... Such a nice series!

  • I loved the Pogues before the Wire, saw them in kilburn back in the early 90s, Shane's the man. Pissed up poet laureate of our (the mislead 80s) generation.

  • fuckin yanks havent got a clue.

  • the wire brought me to the pogues, but the quality kept me there. awesome band.

and I agree with everyone who has said that it really doesn't matter how you came across the band, similar to the people who discovered the stones through Black Ops

  • @jesusmcsanders There were people that didn't know about the Stones before Black Ops?

  • @ravenwing613 amazingly, yes. their sales jumped considerably right after the game was released.

I'd imagine that most people had at least heard of the band, but didn't know the music.

  • are the five dislike guys fucking deaf

  • Who cares how we came to this song? It doesn't matter how you stumbled upon this song, just be happy you were lucky enough to. The Wire is an incredible show and the Pogues are an incredible band. Leave it at that?

  • The Wire The Wire The Wire The Wire The Wire The Wire The Wire The Wire... Just wanted to piss off a few Irish gentlemen

  • i have one question... what the hell is The Wire?

  • @Mereanonymous The best TV series ever my friend.

  • @Mereanonymous You ever heard of the word GOOGLE

  • @yungyacht dude, seriously? wtf. why the hostility.

  • On the 10th anniversary of 9/11 this Canadian wants this to go out to all my American brothers, to me you are beautiful and we are both the only true "north Americans". I love you and always will.

  • @Donryall thanks lad I appreciate it. You guys will always be the friendly neighbors up north. Canada is a beautiful country!

  • On my Ma's side I'm second generation. On dad's side I'm the 18 male in my family to take up arms. The first was during the revolution. I'm a free born man of the USA. God Bless America

  • five people aren't free born men

  • Totally don't get what it's about.... But it's the pogues, and good.

Also, like the rewritten, improved american anthem at the end.

  • We NYC Cops love it and If I should Fall From Grace with God. No ones bag pipes are better than NYC Police.

  • Karioke

  • GOD created alcohol to keep the Irish from ruling the world.

  • @mitchelldaniel89 GOD created alcohol to let the Irish rule the world. ;) theres irish pubs in fecking Afghanistan for christ sakes

  • @88McCloskey and it was probably never graced by an irishman. 95% of those pubs have nothing to do with ireland except for a few signs probably made in china.

  • I loved the Pogues before the Wire, but at the same point The Wire, much like Scorcese using the piano coda in Layla for Goodfellas, has definitely changed the viewpoint of anyone who watched the Wire about this song. It's not a bad thing guys.

  • Wow. When did the disconect happen- when y'all got the HBO? Some of us learned to love the Pogues on the LP. Brave New World.

  • This song was used a few times to great effect in the classic HBO series; The Wire about life on a gang run, drug-riddled housing scheme in West Baltimore, Maryland USA and the covert intelligence gathering carried out by the police that served frequently to fuel the ongoing violence. If you haven't seen The Wire (5 seasons in total) yet, I urge you to check it out. It is flawless and superb drama.

I'm sharing this song for all my Irish American friends. Happy St. Patrick's Day folks :) xx

  • I love the pogues! This band writes the best songs about Irish immigrants in all countries, and definately Irish Americans...this song reminds me so much of my grandpa McCann's funeral. The two things he used to say all the time were "I walked and walked and walked all over India" (about is service in the Army during WWII) and "I'm a freeborn man of the USA".

  • It's a dirty rotten shame that most people know Lady Ga Ga. But you have to look for great music like this. If it wasn't for the car comercial I would never heard these guys.

  • @crorivpro

Excellent, quality music been watching these guys for long time now, but tell you what sound just sounds the same as back in the 80 same.love it.... hope you come back to glasgow

  • Filthy Phil is the man!!

  • the wire is the best

  • The three who voted thumbs down must be these real fat fucks, shlubs, slobs, rolly pollys, old farts, & sagging, miserable, non-Irish, non-booze guzzling boors with these protruding guts & zero appreciation for GREAT music! They need to break out of their funk & live a little! Time to reap as much enjoyment & excitement from life as possible guys, & brilliant, uplifting songs such as this gem could be just the antidote! Me--I'm a free born man of the USA!!!

  • 1:54 I am italian and i have always believed that he say "VERY WELL GONNA AWAY" :D

  • From the wake video:

The tale of a boozy, arrogant, nasty, itchy-dicked, foulmouthed, Mick asshole who made a living off of giving a fuck when it wasn't his turn to give a fuck. LONG LIVE JIMMY MCNULTY!!!

  • load of Yanks on here looking for a slice of history, no problem with that but y'must understand yiz are american and that's that. Oirish american - whats all that about? anyway, great great song - love the pogues man, up the pool!

  • @TheMerseyBoy OIRISH AMERICAN is about representing where your family came from. And to hate on that my friend is a sad deed. I know im a yank but for you to poke at that makes you a parasite. My grandda would kick your ass you fuckin leach!

  • @TheMerseyBoy And you're a scouse orange cunt.

    TAL.

  • @TheOrbit14 Lost me fruitcake - catholic, of proud Irish heritage and laughing at your ignorant bellend ways!!!

  • The Massachusetts state anthem!!! For it is the most Irish state in the entire country!

  • @sxlfkta dont forget about the Irish from County Cook lol

  • @naughton101 LOL indeed! Though are ye referring to County Cook out in Northern Illinois? No doubt there are many Irish out there ((as certain parts of Chicago are thoroughly steeped in Irish culture & pride!)). Though the two most Irish counties in America are right south of Boston--Norfolk & Plymouth, with each being roughly 40% Irish respectively. Also, Quincy, where I live, is, on this per capita basis, the most Irish city in the country, with at 38% of its citizens claiming green genes!

  • @sxlfkta yeah im from Chicago i know that Boston area town have huge Irish population but Boston is a small city(in size) so areas like Quincy are more like neighborhoods in Chicago. If you ever come to Chicago go to Western Ave on the south side both sides of the street for over a mile are Irish pubs/bars

  • @naughton101 I see your point my man! Also, I love Chicago, as it's basically my favorite city in the entire country! For Boston is GREAT, though Chicago is Spectacular, fascinating & very exciting, while its Irish citizens are definitely friendlier, more open & less ill-tempered than those from Boston/Quincy Mass. ((for I've met many wonderful Irish Americans from your wonderful & much beloved city!))! You seem like this very interesting dude, so feel free to stay in touch anytime my man!

  • aye fuck some telly program this is a top tune, that peeler ballax 'Nulty knew fuck all about whisky anyways. Knock back Bushmills in Ireland for it being a "prod" whisky and ye'd be out on yer ear for pig ignorance. Never popped any o those boys neither so he's no proper lad.

  • Irish for life.

  • Jodido Mcnulty!!!!!!

  • Im a free born man ofda UUUUUUUUUUUSA

  • jimmmmmyyyyyyyy, fukin legend. How can a tv program influence so many people

  • I remember when this song wasn't associated with the wire and more associated with it being a great fucking song

  • @zacafreakingriah What a dickhead comment

  • @zacafreakingriah there's nothing wrong with an amazing tv show introducing an amazing band to a whole new generation.

  • @zacafreakingriah who cares it's a great song.... Slainte'

  • @zacafreakingriah at LEAST the show it's associated with does it justice and is itself a GREAT show

  • @zacafreakingriah eventually great songs end up associated with something. at least it was the wire. you know the worst thing? a f-in soccer mom commercial with Fall From grace With God...horrible.

  • @zacafreakingriah so fuckin' what, it's a great fucking song and it's a great fucking show,i wouldn't even know who the pogues are if it wasn't for that show and i would have missed out on one of the greatest bands(and songwriters/singers Shane MacGowan) i ever heard so everybody stop whining, shut the fuck up, and enjoy the fucking song, and if someone says that they heard it on the wire or wherever, it just means that a great show led them to a great song, that's it, nothing more, nothing less.

  • @TommY2033M

the word "Fuckin" said like 8 times in your paragraph?

your argument fails you inarticulate fuck.

and if you have to watch a tv show to be exposed to a great band, then your life is shit really.

  • @Rao665 its more like 5 times and i articulated it so stupid whining people like you would get the point, but i guess i underestimated your stupidity, and btw i am not from UK or America + it was harder for me to avoid being part of the masses and to be an individual and listen to and find great music when i am constantly surrounded by a bunch of idiots who wouldnt know great music if it hit them in the face, so again stop whining and bitching and enjoy the song.

  • "Shiii-yiit if it was you lying dead on some street corner,....pro-bly Jimmie that done it."

  • bunk motherfuckin moreland

  • there's less dislikes on this then, do they know it's christmas time?

  • 1 person aint proud

  • This song makes me proud to be Italian

  • @bazulight1

    shut up

  • i heard this song as many of you people at the tv show "the wire". i´m from germany and i am sure that i disgrace myself now, but i did not get it. whats this song about? why do they played this song at the obsequies?

  • @TSunami3761 cause the song tells the story of a dead guy and his funeral (where they all get drunk, the same as the wire).

  • @TSunami3761 This song is about being an Irish American Patriot and a true hard case bad motherfucker.

  • @cameljoe212

thats how i understood it, but in "the wire" there some cops surely not irish! so i thought that i missunderstood something! but i guess it means more a feeling then a nationality?!

  • @TSunami3761 The Irish have a long history in the police departments on the East Coast. After the famine brought them over in the 1840's-50's, it was one of the few jobs open to Irishmen. This would explain the tradition taking hold, even in Bawlmer where 63.4% of the population is Black now.

  • @TSunami3761 and a party, a big fucking Irish party, the Irish call it a wake.

  • Unbelievable song and geniusly used in an equally brilliant tv series

  • Ok guys, can we all stop arguing and enjoy the song over a pint?

  • macgowans songs will be with us forever

  • To me this song is about the illussion of freedom in the USA. "BUT he never threw a fight unless the fight was right so THEY sent him to the war". Only to come back dead and remembered in his own words as "a free born man of the U.S.A". What he said and what happened kind of contradict each other

  • @Dakatt1 i have to doubt the "illusion" theory of yours.seems like he had many options in the song. beyond that, america has made many an irishman more than what they would have been in ireland proper at the time.

  • @dbpgh The options were to fight the way they wanted or be sent off to war. He choose to be a fighter, fair enough, he didn't make the decision on what would ultimatley be his demise. So freedom is around until you go against the wishes of those who run countries and make wars. Maybe not an illusion but certainly a dillusion from Dwyers perspective.

"they sent him to the war - I'm a free born man" Beautifully ironic song

  • @Dakatt1 yeah well i guess one could say that freedom isnt free.

  • @dbpgh When whether or not you are allowed to be free is decided by someone else, is it really freedom or just a temporary privilege?

  • @Dakatt1 really i dont have a strong aesthic snese that myabe you have. i think the song is more about love, which is a more concrete idea than freedom.i dont know who wrote this, but i know enough that brendan behan and the like are beyond my grasp.it touches certain connections, but i appreciate your perspective.

  • @dbpgh Yeah freedom costs a buck o five.

  • Mick I can't deal with a sad song on Saturday. So here is a happy drunken immigrant song.

I'm free born man of the USA!

  • irish american culture at its finest

  • music video?? This is simply lyrics on the screen where is the "simple music video" ?

  • 1 person is italian

  • Hey,dont turn this great song into a Wire thing, nor a debate on "winde","wine" ,"wind", etc. Keep this classic simple. As someone smarter than all of you, here are the key points to bear in mind:

    1. greatest group ever: the Pogues

    2. greatest song ever: this one (river shannon close second)

    3. greatest city ever: Pittsburgh

  • "if you were lying dead on the street, it's probably Jimmy who'd done you"

  • God damn natural Police.

  • Good song! :)

  • wire

  • irish baltimore. enough said

  • Oh The Wire how I miss thee.

  • Its actually Spanish rifles far away as oppossed to winde or wind. McGowan had a bit of a facination with the Spanish Civil War and thats what he's shiten on about. Thats what it says in the lyrics section on the album in lay

  • @paulcoates208

Thanks for the info, good to know!

  • Perfect song to have a drink of Jameson by!

  • your lyrics suck.. get some proper ears

  • he's referring to the brave irish americans who helped you spanish boys fight franco or dont u know your own fucking history the word is wind dont read to much into it it's not rocket science..

  • Comment removed

  • @wolfgar50

It makes sense, connected to the thing of the fights line and that he was sent to the war... Didn't think about that... But don't get so excited, this is not my native language and for sure I don't need any average american to give me any lesson about my "fucking" history.

    Go shooting someone.

  • The lyrics given are far from 100% accurate.

  • i'm american. but for 4.43 i was irish.

  • @getz21 well said man.

  • @richjohnf: It's not what I did. I'm assuming you don't share my heritage. It's not something one can simply explain, you're born with you're Celtic pride. GO IRELAND
