just a little off topic here but could someone explain to me about Mandarin and Cantonese and if people can understand each other. It's just that i saw actors speaking cantonese acting with those that speak Mandarin and they have to dub cantonese to Mandarin, so how do they understand each other on set

Mandarin is the main language of China since the government choose it for everyone in China circa 50s? to learn so they could communicate with each other. China is like Europe but under one country/government. China has 56 different languages/groups.
