@Nikkytym No, no, you don't understand. White stereotypes are okay because we're oppressors. And hey, Colonel Carter was an intelligent blonde military woman with multiple doctorates who can out-shoot, out-run and out-technobabble any man. As for Dr. Jackson, it's heavily implied that he's jewish (especially his name). I'd say that in context, most of this stuff falls apart. Rainbow Sun didn't renew his contract, so he got written out. That's why his character went nuts.
Star Wars comparisons seems pretty insightful, but I am not so sure about StarGate. Teal'C, Ronon and Teyla , ie the black man as an alien would seem accurate but OTOH isn't it as much as you read into it? I mean if wisecracking Shepherd had been black *that* could have been said to be a black stereotype and at the end with the group getting shot at, and no one but extra 'whitey' getting hit- well that's more the odd thing in SF where the bad guys are always ineffectual fighters...
Yeah, exactly. If you apply a racial lens to the show then you can point out stuff like I did for this project, but at the same time, as you stated, you could probably also apply another lens and "prove" that all of the straight characters were gay, you know? I suppose that's the danger of inductive reasoning. I talked with Martin Gero for this project, and by the sounds of it, they often go out of their way to hire minorities. Unfortunately, these parts are usually the soldiers who die!
I can't speak for the Stargate side (was never a fan) but on the Star Wars side I only agreed with the Nemoidians at the beginning. Watto and Jar Jar (more Watto than anything) was kinda pushing it. Though I totally "lol"ed with the Tusken Raider being Arab.
Yeah, Watto always struck me as a stock character -- a greasy, bargain-driving salesman. If anything, I'd say he's an insult to Gonzo's species given his appearance. But the article I read had support for its claim, so just because I couldn't see the immediate connection didn't mean that others hadn't seen the similarities, so I was obligated to include it in my project. We'll all always have different opinions, which is a good thing!
Oh yeah, totally dude. All in all it was a well edited video and did point out some stuff that I had never noticed (the "meesa" factoid in particular). And yes Gonzo would be helluva pissed : )
God i never noticed any of this. Jar-jar was a waste of space childrens character and shouldnt have even been in the movie. I laughed at the jewish shopkeeper as well! I also couldnt tell the sand people from real middle easteners
The Star Wars part was really good but the rest felt quite stretched.

Dude, not all the Jaffa are black. In fact, the Jaffa are just as varied as humans.
Also I think you spend too much time overanalyzing and not enough time just watching SG for what it is.

It's clear that the stereotypes in the prequels were not far fetched, especially since Lucas calls them children's films.
