  • Hello steev, really like your videos and my dream is to someday have one tenth of the equipment you have! lol

I was watching this video and maybe a detail has gone unnoticed.

For an acoustically better, you should have made the box a little larger and the bottom and the lid should be with thinner wood.

Sorry my english, I'm using google traslator!

    Big hug!

  • Nirvana what a good version!

  • Are there any alternates to a coping saw blade?

  • could you tell me what i need to make i mean what things i should bye

    pleas pleas!!!

  • cool! native thumb piano

  • Dr. House?

  • where would you get red cedar for this preticular project can you order some online or do you have to go to local lumber yards. and also where did your dad get a old lathe like that the old one siting in your workshop on your work bench and cool video also

  • math is hard.

  • 1:09

    lol Hard... wood...

am i the only one laughing when he says wood?

    feels immature, man...

  • You would probably get a better sound with an 1/8" top and a larger soundboard. The thin top would need bracing. The hole in your project takes up most of the area and will reduce vibrations needed for amplification. A smaller hole placed at the bottom would be louder and richer.

  • cedar wood ?

  • Just watched this because I plan on making one for my African studies class. Thanks for making this video! Very informative! For a larger bit of metal that works wonderfully and gives a good sound we used pieces from a feeler gauge and we bought a large wooden bowl from Goodwill that gives a very nice sound too :D

  • are those little saws you used for the tines?

  • @armygirlspirit Yes...coping saw blades.

  • is not a piano is a kalimba!

  • I think rake blades on a metal yard rake are a lot louder. Better more full sound.

  • I like to make these from wood bowls I find at the thrift store. Just flatten the rim if need be and glue on the top. good to go.

  • this dude finally got a vid on how to make this on youtube. thumbs up bro.

  • yo dude they make a great rtouter bit called a locking miter cuts a perfict 45 angle on the work pease no guse work for you find it on the web I use it and the joints are neat clean and strong try it you'll like it by gum

  • Thanks apart from your annoying voice I am glad to say this is the 1st actual video on how to make one these instruments on the YouTube. I wonder what metal they use in the African one's?

You would find my voice annoying it's a mirror image thing

  • How did you set up that guide to rip that first angle on your saw?

  • Thank God, your son picked up your slack on the tuning of the Thumb Piano. - Free wood is good, Free video is better but Free Beer is best ! ! ! - - TEXAS - - Nice video. Thanks for posting.

  • good video. Not the first time I've heard Nirvana on a kalimba.

  • i Like the way you laugh. It makes the listener laugh along with you

  • what color lsker do you use

  • @karnosbloishot Uh, blue?

  • this is actually called a kalimba....and it can make the most beautiful music if given the opportunity

  • How'd you hurt your finger during the video (shows around 6:00)? LOL

  • @projekt89130 It was actually kind of weird. As I was snipping off the end of one of those coping saw blades, the end sprang back and pricked my finger!

  • I don't have any aromatic cedar...luckily I have a wood supplier with a large stock of aromatic cedar for only two bucks a board foot

  • You can use another junk piece of wood to stack with the other on the miter so it doesn't rip through at 3:15.

  • @Moe7133 I totally agree. It's a shame to see tearout on a nice piece of lumber.

  • That turned out really nice Steve. For some reason I want to make a PVC tube xylophone, I don't know why and I like wood better. Again, nice work. I really like the split drum, I'm going to look for a video on it, I hope you made one.

  • Great job Steve, I said it before, I say it again: "I admire your enthusiasm" A real inspiration,,,,Thank you for the ideas!

  • ha, Nirvana on a Thumb Piano

  • instead of saw blades how about the metal strips from windscreen wiper blades (windshield wipers to you foriegners lol)

  • Hi Steve! If I may make one suggestion....If you make any more of these, try making the top surface as thin as you can. That will allow it to resonate more and make the instrument louder and produce a nicer tone. I learned this from reading about acoustic guitars. Another great video!

  • Great project idea! I have to check out the rainstick video. Hey Stevin, have you try making bookmarks? Would be nice to see what you come up with. Anyway, nice job. Keep it up.... I have learned a great deal from you videos... Thank you so much...

  • what happened with the new HD camera?

  • When you were half-way done I was thinking—Bird House

Good Project. Where DO you come up with these ideas!

  • Hey Steve I think you need to oil the mitre saw. Otherwise great vid

  • it was more musical then the stuff they put on the music industry puts out

  • Looks like you caught your knuckle on something.... Cool project, I think I'll try it.

  • great video again steve, btw hows your cancer treatment going? hope your coping ok

  • It's a face!! 5:41

  • Awesome job!

  • hey you want to send me a couple of pieces of that cedar. i need a tray for my humidor and i can't find any ceder around here.

  • Steve, I can assure you that using an oil based finish (Danish oil, Tung oil etc) will give an even BETTER result in terms of color then the 'get it over with' lacquer! It won't disappoint you.

  • click 0:18 over and over lol

  • where did you find that double stick tape? i cant find it anywhere

  • @ironlionkalo Most hardware stores carry it: look for carpet tape.

  • @ironlionkalo woodcraft sells it also, youll find it on their website

  • Great Video Steve... It sounds just like the one I have from Africa... BTW, you can also use it as a bird houses.... LOL Really, love it Steve... Thanx

  • why dont you make a vid of your sun makein somthin i wanna see how far the apple falls from the tree if you know what im sayin

  • hm, I'm curious, did you try with another woods (f.e. mahogany)? Maybe it would sound different, interesting.

And, as an always, nothing special = phenomenal video ;)

  • @devilyoushy This is the only one I made, using wood I had around. But I have no doubt it would sound much better with something like mahogany. Rosewood is the wood of choice for musicians.

  • @stevinmarin Spruce? :)

  • @stevinmarin all of my guitars are either Alder, Spruce, or maple or rosewood. Dont feel bad I SUCK at miters also I dont do them unless I really have to for somebody who needs fine carpentry to be done.

  • have you thought about putting a sound peg inside to help the sound?

  • Actually, I was first. Haha!

  • third?

  • First? really that all you have to say about the video. I'm so tiered of these people that has to use up space for this nonsenses.

By the way, great clip. fun as always.

  • first?

  • @a6m6 ya can be first to comment on my vid if you want,
