They invented a template that future bands would take and make their own. Underground bands that loved this band and wanted to take it a step furrther, it took 20 years for the underground bands to appreciate this music. At least they made something of it, but the bands 5 years later just copied it! To this day no one can compare to the rawness of this band. One of a kind!
Wow, look at the crowd. A year or two later the slamming would be so violent that many of the so-called Hollywood bands became disillusioned with the violence of the scene. But this crowd is barely moving!
Yep....i was thre somewhere in that crowd...we were all friends back then...i was DEVASTATED when i learned of Tomata's passing...i met him before ALL THE OTHERS!!! on his first night in LA from NYC...he was AWESOME...
you wont have to worry if u dont get the book they got a new documentary comming out called lexicon devil looks like a bigger production than the movie was
kings of what? screamo? are fucking kidding me? screamo is bullshit. the term "punk" is way beyond played out, but this is actually what punk is. the screamer playing at the masgue in 77. screamo, get the fuck outta here
Tomata and the rest were from Seattle. They were in The Tupperwares and Zee Whiz Kids. Black Randy, Penelope Houston and the Lewd were ALL from Seattle.
Like many in the UK I caught the punk bug in 1977 and like most I am not familiar with the LA scene from that time. Thanks so much for posting this-it really captures the atmosphere.
what the fuck, they weren't the first "Screamo" band. screamo indicates emo and they guys were far from that. they were punk and fast and they didn't give a fuck...not screamo whiny pussies. if anything, they were the first synthpunk band. not only that, screamo didn't start till the early 90's in san diego.
and you can't say LA punk was copying NYC or UK because it was all happening at the same time. and it was all new. it wasn't a widely publicized type of music. there was no mass media back then like it is today. if you were a punk in '77 it means that you were authentic and you had to put up with all the name calling, etc., that went with the territory. you risked getting beat up because you would be considered a freak. nowadays it's cool to be a punk. everyone and there mother is a punk now.
Wow great channel! It brings back so many memories of the Masque and Starwood and the Whiskey and the Mabuhay Gardens where I first saw the Screamers with the Avengers I think. Tomata and Tommy crashed on my floor for a few nights in San Fransisco. Don Vinil of the Offs was a close friend (RIP)so I met everyone even though I wasn't a musician. Just a punk rock groupie :)
Good stuff. Think about it: this guy was gay and yet he had the balls to perform all-balls-out in front of an angry violent homo-hating crowd of punks. I'd like to see you try that some time. And please stop with all this "my band is more punk than your band bullshit." Just listen to it, try to get it, and if you don't like it, move on. No one is impressed and no one is going to fight you over it, gorillaman.
Homo-hating? At the Masque in '77? Nah, not buying that. I saw the Screamers twice before they broke up and that Hollywood scene was full of homos. Nobody gave them any shit either. And if the harsh lyrics and language is your only clue then I'm sure you think that Sid's swastika was all about his anti-semitism. The actually racist and anti-gay elements took several more years to happen. Probably something to do with more dumb punk kids going to jail.
I'm basing my statement on this quote from Lexicon Devil (about Darby Crash and The Germs): "It's a real shame that punk rock was so in the closet back then. I heard that Darby was despondent over his sexuality and I regret that I couldn't have helped. Homophobia was rampant in the L.A. punk scene ..." That was Tomata talking about the period before Darby died, which would have been 77-80.
Part 1: Yeah, I ought to read the book maybe. I was surprised to see in the review blurb (Booklist) that it claimed that Darby's gayness was a secret. Maybe it was in '77 but by the time I saw the Germs in '79 it was common knowledge. Um, Cruisin' soundtrack? The Pleasure Chest? The Hollywood punk experience I remember was a lot less homophobic than just about any other community that has any heterosexuals in it.
Part 2: Sure there was heckling like FEAR's, but that's because nothing was off limits then. It wasn't some sort of scenewide homophobic agenda like say, any all-american high school team sport.
But what do I know. My bad for the 'I'm sure you think' line in my first reply. I trust Don but I'll have to read the book to see how Brendan or Parfrey might've fucked it up.
Part 3: My friend RD was hanging out with Darby one time and Darby's sexual orientation came up. "Fuck that," Darby snapped, "I'm not a fag--I'll just fuck anything that isn't black."
I wonder how many quotes like that made it into Brendan's book.
I don't doubt your personal impression. I'm just saying my statement was based on what I've read and seen and that I wasn't talking out my ass.
Part of the pathology of being closeted is that the paranoia and self-loathing often makes your gayness a bigger deal to you than it actually is to other people. So maybe people knew about Darby and didn't care - but obviously he didn't feel comfortable being open about his sexuality in that scene.
it talks about how he seduced guys but not really much more than that the book just says it was a well kept secret and darby did it for image mostly the book just retraces his life and ends with his death and funeral has full lyrics of like everysong doesnt go too much into the meaning
This vid's fuckin' amazin'! According to some poster on another Screamers vid here, they did an acetate and gace it to Rodney, he needed money when his mom died and the dude's friend paid him $1,500 for it. True? Man, LA punk's GREAT!! Dangerhouse was THE shit.

What a bunch of lightweights. All of the California bands were pathetic. They tried to copy the NY and London scenes, but failed miserably. I saw them in the late seventies and they sucked.
Please tell me just how the fuck the LA bands were "trying to copy the NY and London" bands??? That's the most ignorant shit I've ever heard. Are you sure you were there back then? LA had a much more unique scene than either of those overrated cities. May the ghost of Black Randy shit in your mouth for eternity.
the only comparison between LA, NYC and UK is that we were all infected by the same thing. and it wasn't a widespread media glamorized thing, so you really had to have an instinct to find the scene. LA scene was a younger crowd, more colorful and funner. NYC punk seemed like older guys who graduated from the glitter scene. UK punk was a lot more political. LA was just fun, until hardcore started. but we were all marching to the beat of the same drum. there were very few of us.
