Correction: Psycho is the 5.85mm my son now has. The Collosal is the 8.85mm. I also have the 2.75mm screamer, which I've also sanded and that works very well too. Still occasionally go back to my 2.0mm Ultexes, but not sure how long that's gonna last.
OK, so I finally got a "Psycho (8.25mm, I think) and her's my verdict.
Out of the box, it does sound brighter, but not for the reasons most people think. The properties of the material that make it non-slip also makes it "bow" the string a little on the attack. Sounds a little like a tiny "mouse squeak" (or chirp, as Vinnie puts it). For electric, I can see this sounding brighter, absolutely. I dialled it out by buffing with 800 grit paper, no chirp, sounds just like my 2.0mm Ultex now. Sweet!
i wonder if you could tell me the difference between jazz3 stiffo and jazz3 nylon and which of the two you can use for a thick, warm and bluesy sound(?)
This is just a truth a lot of people have known for a long time: a thicker pick gives you more power, as it doesn't "give" and "flap" as much as a thin pick. That's why Dunlop Jazz were good for a long while. I've moved up from them to Tortex and now the newer Ultex 1.40mm sharp picks and noticed a huge difference.
By the way, I play acoustic, so you notice it far more there than on electric.
I'm gonna try these out as I think I'll find them a progression, if executed well.
About a year ago I saw a video about the Jazz III that seemed to make sense. I resolved to try that tiny little, evil, useless pick. It took about 6 hours of playing with it until I "got it". That precision little point is very hard to use at first, but when you have your "I get it" moment, you'll never go back. It is so precise it forces you to pick properly. Now, a regular pick feels like playing guitar with a credit card. Thanks Dunlop.
Actually the pick does make a huge difference, it sounds weird but it's true. It's something you gotta feel for it to make sense, but the Jazz III sorta bends under pressure. I know this company takes picks back if people don't like them, so it's worth a try. $7 with shipping is worth a try if it makes playing a more pleasurable experience.
Would you recommend me using that pick if I play heavy riffs? I'm just afraid it might slip out of my hand or break a string because I tend to play hard.
@rockstarkicker it's actauly easier to paly heavy stuff with the dunlop jazz III but u have to get use to it cause it also takes less effort to get clearity so u don't ahve to pick as hard
@narfire214 it'll make him alot of money if he gets jazz 3 players to use v picks cause there are alot of jazz 3 users out there, me being one of them, so yes i think he would spend just over 7 mins doing just such a thing ;)
@ABMD92 Nah, I think you're missing a trick or not listening. To prove it, without using V-picks, try playing an acoustic, first with a flappy 0.73mm pick, any make, then try an Ultex 1.40mm pick. Unless your ears are damaged, you should hear a difference.
@Kalenski i think you'll find its you who is not listening, i am not contesting the fact that a thicker pick is better, thats common knowledge and if you dont know that then sell your guitars. if you read my comment properly you would know that i'm simply a bit skeptical about his claim that the 1.0 v-pick sounds so much better than the jazz III, i know that some materials can be brighter sounding than others but i dont think its possible to the extent he implies.
@Kalenski nice one captain sarcasm. but i think you'll find my comment didn't imply that thicker picks aren't better either, kinda makes your reply seem moot don't you think? try dropping the intelligence act, then slip off of your pretentious high horse and try mingling with us commoners ;)
@Kalenski you could clearly see in my last comment that i am no more agitated than you are, don't flatter yourself by thinking you're getting to my ;)
@iFubaz The black seems a little thicker and less shine to the plastic, i beleive the black gets a thicker sound and it's easier to hold on to, the red seems to bring out more treble, but thats just my opinion.
I just got mine yesterday (2 small lite pointed and a free stiletto), I must say these picks are AMAZING ! I definitely recommend them everyone ! I've been using the dunlop h3 jazz picks forever now (actually I ordered 30 of them last month and now I've got nothing to do with them) and the v-picks are better by far.
Oh my gosh! What a clear difference! Didn't think I'd be able to tell. I liked the sound of the 1.5 mm V pick the best. I've the used the Jazz III for the last few years after learning Petrucci and Bonamassa used them. Maybe it's time for a change...!
We now have 2 more models that are great replacements for the Jazz III. They are the Steletto 1.5mm and the Dimension Jr. 4.10. They both come in the unbuffed versions. That is how I prefer them.
do bigger picks make you more prone to breaking strings? I hear a difference in tone, but i've also heard people say (mainly classical guitar players and some blues purists) that playing with your fingers creates the best tone.
I have not broken a string in a VERY long time! I find with a bigger pick, I don't hit the string as hard. However, it has the effect of doing so. Carlos Santana likes our thick picks because he says they sound like his thumb.
I just ordered a whole heap from the site - the starter kit plus the Stiletto, Switchblade, and Shredder. I've been searching for the best pick for me for a few year now, and have mostly settled on the Jazz III - I was drawn to them because John Petrucci and Michael Angelo Batio use them, and they're the most blazing players on earth, but I'm hoping the V picks are more playable live, so I'll give your picks a try, and I'll let you know what I think when I've given them a good long shot.
Thanks Bro! We will get those picks right out to you.
I am looking forward to your review. Please let us all know here what you think of them after spending a little time playing. I think you will love them!
I have had the V-Pick starter kit for over an hour and already see a great improvement in my speed and accuracy. Who would have known? I am very impressed and will probably end up giving most all my other picks away.
I just got my V-Picks in the mail earlier today...all I can say is MAN it actually DOES help you clean up your technique! the 5 v-picks I bought are precious and indispensable to me now. I'm a big fan of the chirping..for two reasons 1)It lets me know the note I hit was flawless and 2)it adds much more character and aggression to a distorted tone. The Jazz 3 is good but it sounds pretty lifeless next to a beveled/pointed V-Pick. I cant wait to try something like an Insanity soon! Thanks Vinnie!!
I always use two picks if I am playing a lot of rhythm and want a thin sound like on a strat and I want to cut through. I use orange dunlop which I think is a .60mm
And for jazzy stuff I use the purple dunlop 2.0 I did try the big stubby by dunlop I like it too
Hello Vinni, I play a strat and I usually play lead guitar. What pick do you recommend for a big sound leads but also with a good bite? I usually play jazz iii's but I dont like the thin sound I get with them.
first decent pick demo-shoot out.Great work.Do you think that such a 'fat' pick reduses the dynamics, meanng that might be harder to hit lightly the strings?
@choganskateboarding O yeah...he's a super nice guy, and he treats his customers like each one is important. he made me feel that way when I started purchasing V-picks from his site. That was nice of you to make that comment about him...cuz I said the same thing about him :)
@nancylanesmith yeah, id like to see somebody else play that one besides me beause its a great pick. a little tough on the alternate fast picking but its a dream for sweeped arpeggios and P.harmonics. requires a light touch to play really fast and accurate strokes to be consistant.
@nancylanesmith Oh, I looked at your web and you are right. Very cool. I surely get Small Pointed Lite (as a user of Jazz III 1,38 mm) or Glowing 2,7mm. Should have glowing small ones, not sure if that almost 3 mm will not be too big for me. Doing a lots of tremolo picking..
Personally I still like the Dunlop Jazz III tone, I feel although it is not as fat sounding as the V-pick, it sounds a little more lively to my ear. Thanks for the demo nonetheless. Great playing BTW.
hey vinny .. you have done an amzing job with these picks !
i would love to try them but i live in a city where there are only two music stores and none of them have v-picks nad i would love to try them out to improve my playin !. i hope one day ill get to play
Hi, i'm considering getting a vpick, but i'm looking for the right one. does the thickness of a guitar pick help you play faster? I'm trying to decide between a Dimension pick (4.10 mm) and a Small Pointed pick (2.75 mm). also, what is the biggest differences between buffed and unbuffed when playing? thank you
Got a question. I've been using Jazz III picks ever since, and a friend of mine introduced to me the SREAMER V-Pick. I loved it, but the pointed sides are getting in the way for me. Question is: Do you have a V-Pick model that's the same size as the Jazz III? What's the model name? I would sure love to have one of those. thanks!
between the jim and the v-picks, v-picks sound great. when you play with the jim, you hear a tiny mute buzz untill the pick is done sliding of the string. the thinner v-pick has he same sound but not really a mute buzz . the 2.7mm is amazing, really gives that style of playin a soft crunch tone. im convinced, im getting some
Great playing Vinnie - I own an assortment of your V-Picks and I find my favorite being the Ultra Lite Large. I've been crazy over Picks for quite some time, Copper, Bone, Horn, Tortoise shell and many of the large pick manufactures products, but the Ultra Lite Large gives me the speed of a thin pick with the strength and tonal quality of a thicker pick. Playing blues my pick attack varies from strong to soft and the Ultra Lite Large allows for that and gives me the tone I'm looking. Thanks!
This is physics folks. From materials used, to density and attack. The thing to keep in mind is not what just sounds "better" (a subjective term) when played by itself, but in the environment you'd be using the pick. For example, have you ever set the EQ on your amp , and thought...wow...that sounds great. Then, when you played the same setting with the band, your sound was buried in the mix? The bottom line is don't use anything because someone says it's cool....use it if if works for you.
I just did a shoot-out of my own with four rounded v-picks against Golden Gate mandolin picks, Grisman "Dawgs", the round side of Fender X-Heavies, and the round side of Dunlop Gel X-Heavies. For what I'm trying to do, the V-picks did not fare well. I would have to describe them as too bright, too noisy, and to expensive. They might be great for rock, country, or blues. I don't think they're a great choice for fusion or jazz, however.
The difference is subtle, but I can hear it. I just ordered four medium rounded v-picks. It will be interesting to see how they stack up against the round side of a fender or dunlop yellow gel x-heavy...I'm going for warmth rather than bite.
DOES anybody KNOWS to ANSWER? I have a new PRS Sunburst 22 with the 57/08 pickups. When I play upstroke picking, the tone of the guitar is very weak. When down-stroking, the guitar seems to be function alright. I'm playing with same dynamics from the picking hand, and tried to play with more power when up-stroking but the result was the same. The sound was still weak, not the original as when down-stroking.It happens to all the strings.
@panatha1308 Try making sure your middle finger is directly under the pointer to support it and the nest finger under it gives u more support on upstroke fixed this problem for me.......
I tried the same kinda thing with a few different picks at home and managed to get all of the sounds on here with a Jazz III, a li'l sttubby 3mm and a venom nylon .45mm pick, not conclusive enough for me especially with the guy demonstrating seeming to work for Vpicks in some way. Better to spend time on technique and feel rather than relying on a pick to make you sound how you want to.
I bought the "Family V-pick Pack" and it contains the most incredible picks i have ever played not to mention the versatility and the unique sound each pick produces Smooth and Crisp with highs lows and nice mids i am incredibly astounded at the attention to detail on these magnificently well hand crafted pieces of musical art I will always be a fan and not to mention I was born in Modesto and Vinnies shop is around here very proud.

I prefere Dunlop 207 jazz picks to anything else. Ive used them for over 14 years now and I dont think Im gona pay $4 for something very similar, yet clear. I like to be able to loose my pick in a dark club and not have to freak out over having just basicaly dropped a $5 bill....i would like to try one out tho.
im happy you sell thick picks because with my picks i take an apoxy and put vynyl sheets on the grip areas to thicken it up, because the store where i live inly goes up to 2 mm
having just this minute lost my jazz iii i had been using for the past year and a half, watching this has really made me think about trading in for a v pick, although he isnt the most objective of all people to do a video on it, but the difference is quite impressive
Is that 2.75 real thick? Cuz V Picks makes some really thick ass picks. I usally use Thins and Meds... planet waves, what would you recomened size wise for me?
To be fair I doubt you could get the accuracy of johnson's playing with a rounded pick. He himself uses an old scholl jazz III. Johnson's tone is mainly from his gear and insane attention to detail with his sound. Google his rig, it's insane!
Guitar teacher recommended Jazz III's and I was very commited to them, until I ordered a couple of V picks. Lost them in Edmonton and forgot about the difference it made until recently, and I just ordered seven replacements I can't wait for. Oh, and anyone who says that picks don't make any difference, or you can use coins or paper, that's like saying the kind of wood your guitar is made of has no impact. The first couple of miliseconds of attack define how your brain percieves the entire sound.
@pencert Yeah, it's a known fact that if you take a recording of the clean sound of any instrument and cut of the attack the resonance will sound the same no matter what instrument it is.
Ofcourse this only works in theory because with some instruments you'll get string buzz, etc....
The original Jazz 3 is made out of nylon, I'd be curious to hear the differences between V-Picks and the new Ultex Jazz 3.

@choganskateboarding O yeah...he's a super nice guy, and he treats his customers like each one is important. he made me feel that way when I started purchasing V-picks from his site. That was nice of you to make that comment about him...cuz I said the same thing about him :)

@elias909antonas Yeah, there's just something about his spirit, idk.
choganskateboarding 1 year ago
Well, Vinni...we can hear the difference out here in "YouTube Land" ___ the V-pick 2.75 wins the shoutout !

Not sure if anyone tried this, but its better to close your eyes and just listen!

any chance you will ever demo your Psycho Shredder? I am VERY interested in hearing and seeing the performance of that pick
AxeMasTerRAWE 1 year ago
Sure. i can do that.
nancylanesmith 1 year ago
@nancylanesmith yeah, id like to see somebody else play that one besides me beause its a great pick. a little tough on the alternate fast picking but its a dream for sweeped arpeggios and P.harmonics. requires a light touch to play really fast and accurate strokes to be consistant.
whitelotus808 1 year ago
@AxeMasTerRAWE dude you can just ask me for details, i bought one and ive been playing it for awhile now. no vid though.

Pity, that V-Picks cannot be bought in Czech.
WakizashiSabre 1 year ago
You can buy them directly from our website. I ship to Czech Republic quite often.
nancylanesmith 1 year ago
@nancylanesmith Oh, I looked at your web and you are right. Very cool. I surely get Small Pointed Lite (as a user of Jazz III 1,38 mm) or Glowing 2,7mm. Should have glowing small ones, not sure if that almost 3 mm will not be too big for me. Doing a lots of tremolo picking..
Thank you kindly again.
WakizashiSabre 1 year ago
Personally I still like the Dunlop Jazz III tone, I feel although it is not as fat sounding as the V-pick, it sounds a little more lively to my ear. Thanks for the demo nonetheless. Great playing BTW.

monki8855 1 year ago
Hi, i'm considering getting a vpick, but i'm looking for the right one. does the thickness of a guitar pick help you play faster? I'm trying to decide between a Dimension pick (4.10 mm) and a Small Pointed pick (2.75 mm). also, what is the biggest differences between buffed and unbuffed when playing? thank you
Force2BRW 1 year ago
Got a question. I've been using Jazz III picks ever since, and a friend of mine introduced to me the SREAMER V-Pick. I loved it, but the pointed sides are getting in the way for me. Question is: Do you have a V-Pick model that's the same size as the Jazz III? What's the model name? I would sure love to have one of those. thanks!
alchrimon 1 year ago
I suggest you try the small pointed 2.75mm and the small pointed lite 1.5mm. I think one of those are your best bet.
Hope this helps, Vinni

hey vinni i play bass with a pick and they seem to wear down completely fast whats the most durable in the line of v picks?
dud8112084 1 year ago
Stu Hamm plays bass with a V-Pick. He is one of our endorsers. He uses the Large Pointed 2.75mm and the Psycho.
Billy Sheehan uses the Psycho.

The large pointed 2.75mm is our most popular bass pick. BTW, Stu Hamm plays and endorses that V-Pick
nancylanesmith 1 year ago
@nancylanesmith thank you ive bought the screamer and i like it i will surely try others too
dud8112084 1 year ago
between the jim and the v-picks, v-picks sound great. when you play with the jim, you hear a tiny mute buzz untill the pick is done sliding of the string. the thinner v-pick has he same sound but not really a mute buzz . the 2.7mm is amazing, really gives that style of playin a soft crunch tone. im convinced, im getting some
yzkx711 1 year ago
Great playing Vinnie - I own an assortment of your V-Picks and I find my favorite being the Ultra Lite Large. I've been crazy over Picks for quite some time, Copper, Bone, Horn, Tortoise shell and many of the large pick manufactures products, but the Ultra Lite Large gives me the speed of a thin pick with the strength and tonal quality of a thicker pick. Playing blues my pick attack varies from strong to soft and the Ultra Lite Large allows for that and gives me the tone I'm looking. Thanks!
TNT73BLF 1 year ago
In about 1 week all the Ultra Lite V-Picks are going to improve by about 300%. I have a new formula that is FANTASTIC
nancylanesmith 1 year ago
This is physics folks. From materials used, to density and attack. The thing to keep in mind is not what just sounds "better" (a subjective term) when played by itself, but in the environment you'd be using the pick. For example, have you ever set the EQ on your amp , and thought...wow...that sounds great. Then, when you played the same setting with the band, your sound was buried in the mix? The bottom line is don't use anything because someone says it's cool....use it if if works for you.
mazsenior 1 year ago 13
They sound like they would be best in a live setting, possibly in a trio. They make the tone bigger. I'll have to order some.

The pick dont makes the guitarist.

@popami But they can make a big part of said guitarist's tone.

Vinnie??
Thanks guys!
panatha1308 1 year ago
Usually it is the upstroke that is the loudest for me.....
nancylanesmith 1 year ago
@panatha1308 Try making sure your middle finger is directly under the pointer to support it and the nest finger under it gives u more support on upstroke fixed this problem for me.......

I tried the same kinda thing with a few different picks at home and managed to get all of the sounds on here with a Jazz III, a li'l sttubby 3mm and a venom nylon .45mm pick, not conclusive enough for me especially with the guy demonstrating seeming to work for Vpicks in some way. Better to spend time on technique and feel rather than relying on a pick to make you sound how you want to.

It IS a V-Pick commercial. Why do you think I am comparing them to a Jazz III?

im happy you sell thick picks because with my picks i take an apoxy and put vynyl sheets on the grip areas to thicken it up, because the store where i live inly goes up to 2 mm

having just this minute lost my jazz iii i had been using for the past year and a half, watching this has really made me think about trading in for a v pick, although he isnt the most objective of all people to do a video on it, but the difference is quite impressive
stratofyer 1 year ago
wow, the V picks really have more highs and lows.. makes the dunlop sound dull. I play dunlops all the time..EEK lifeless by comparison.

but that;s my opinion. And nice cherry-burst strat man

Is that 2.75 real thick? Cuz V Picks makes some really thick ass picks. I usally use Thins and Meds... planet waves, what would you recomened size wise for me?

We make picks as thin as .8mm with some flex.

i love eric johnson's tone. Do the round ones give that "attackless" tone similar to his?
tubaeli93 1 year ago
The rounded picks have much less attack.
nancylanesmith 1 year ago
@tubaeli93

The first couple of miliseconds of attack define how your brain percieves the entire sound.
pencert 2 years ago
@pencert Yeah, it's a known fact that if you take a recording of the clean sound of any instrument and cut of the attack the resonance will sound the same no matter what instrument it is.
Ofcourse this only works in theory because with some instruments you'll get string buzz, etc....
Theyweredoingsome 2 years ago
