This is the base model for mother game protaganists and was a test model for Lucas in mother 3. Ken (Niten) from mother 1 also looks like this. it was most likely regected due to the fact that he and Claus were twins and they wanted them to be able to be told apart easily (i.e. hair color). this "Ness" is Lucas, but Ness does show up in the theartre in mother 3 along with the rest of his party.

the 64dd DID come out, but only had like, 6 games for it, this was gonna be ported to regular N64 cartridge, but it couldn't hold it, so the idea was scrapped and they started working on the GBA version.

The reason Ness is in this is probably because it was early in development. The protagonist (Lucas) wasn't decided on for a while, so this Ness/Ninten appears to be a placeholder.

Actually, with Ness's soul being transput into the Ness robot, his body could very well have been sent into the future as well. I mean, there's no way we'd ever know why they had Ness in this alpha version of the game, but the idea of an empty shell of his body being sent forth into Lucas's time is possible.

Take a closer look to Ness's sprite. His hair is obviously close to the Earthbound/Mother 2 version. The only concern I have over it is that Ness had a backpack and this guy doesn't, meaning that it could also be Ninten.

Btw, Ness couldn't be a reincarnation of Ninten because Ninten would still be alive by then (Mother 1/Earthbound Zero = 1980's & Mother 2/Earthbound = 199X AKA 1990's).

Another possibility is that Lucas wasn't supposed to be the main character. That scene with Lucas and Claus in the mine shaft suggests that the two were much more active early on in the story. Perhaps another villager, some kid who looked like Ness, would become the main character later on the game (similar to Lucas' debut in GBA's Mother 3).

Duh, Ryuka and Lucas are the same Person, in Japanese you write him リュカ. Which reads "Ryuka". And K(u)raus(u) = Claus, it's just the Katakana クラウス Kurausu.

Usually, the Japanese pronounciation of a foreign name remotely sounds like the actual name, but why is it that Lucas' name pronounciation in Japan is "Ryuka"?

They did the same thing with Tidus' (from Final Fantasy X) name in Japan, because it's pronounced as "Tida" over there. I just wonder why names that end with "-us" ends up having only an "-a" sound at the end of it in Japan. Adding "-su" at the very end would make more sense (ex: Tidasu, Ryukasu.)

I think they showed Ness only for the whole "Look what we can do" thing to stir up interest in the game. Originally, the ending of Mother 2 was not the simple "Come find me Ness!" that Pokey gives. It's a lot more complex, what it originally was. I wish they kept that original one, the ties to Mother 3 would have been a crapload more apparant.

@zelakzanai I don't know where you heard that because Mato has been showing the major differences between Mother 2 and Earthbound including stuff that was translated differently and from what he told Me when I asked him whether the letter was different and was more complex he said that no Pokey's letter that Picky gives to Ness is pretty much the same in both Mother 2 and Earthbound, he even said it seems more like you heard a rumor that spreads easily.
