Most likely, form his point of view, if they were foolish enough to sign a contract with a cruel person, then it's their own doings whatever the Summoner in question does to them.

Example: I make a contract with Loke and tell him to kill me, he cannot do it by the Spirit Kings law, but if I kill him, that's okay. Ya follow me?

Lucy now scares me.Karen died from trying to maintain TWO spirits at once one of which was drawing no strength from her. Lucy summoned NINE spirits all pulling on her own power AFTER using incredible amounts of power trying to open the gate. That is freaking scary.
