  • I got this game for my birthday back in '93, when I was like 10 years old! :) Still a treasured possession.

  • KEY CHANGE MOFO!

  • Has anyone noticed the absence of drums/percussion in EVERY song/music in this game?

  • FF 1 always had such a distinctive music style that think did a great job separating it from its contemporaries.

  • Easily tied with the Mario/Metroid/Zelda and Castlevania series for number 1 of all time!

  • What's the name of the first song?

  • @keenobrown919 Final fantasy prelude

  • Hal kill Chaos with a black mage. not a black wizard damn

  • hal is pretty amazing

  • NEStalgia :-)

  • And the Town's ?

  • hey isnt that 2nd song...the theme in final fantasy XII??

  • @mikethewatcher the song's name is final fantasy, it's the theme of the whole series

  • out of curiosity where might I come across these audio files?

  • Too bad I can't hear Corneria Castle in this, but I'm glad you bought up some other good music in this one :)

  • i like how the white wizard gives the finger when he is casting

  • I remember playing Final Fantasy I while my Mom was watching coverage on TV of the Gulf War in Iraq (We had an NES hooked up to the old Commodore 64 monitor so we had a TV in the same room)

Anyway, that pretty much summed up the early 90s. Must have been early 1991 or so. I think I got the game for Xmas 1990.

  • I remember ff2 for SNES , on the moon I would build all my charaters up to straight 9's even though it wasn't really called for, I just enjoyed going to the final boss and doing ridiculous damage to it.

  • I see someone's attempting the "single character" challenge. I guess a Red Mage would work best as they can use most white and black magic, and the Masamune sword can make any mage into a powerful fighter, although you won't see that until near the end of the game.

This is the hardest Final Fantasy to attempt a "single character" challenge in, IMO (although I haven't formally played FF2 [NES version] or any of the sequels after 8 so YMMV, I guess).

  • man.. fuck single character playthroughs. thats all im sayin'

  • TT_TT TT_TT

  • The town music is the most beautiful song in the whole game.. To bad that it is not included here :(

  • i luv this stuff !

  • I love how the Masamune can make ANY character an incredible powerhouse.

  • aww bummer, I had the "town" music in my head, which is why I sought out this video, but I didnt hear the tune in this mix.

  • square didn't release the original in europe *SOB*

  • HOW DO YOU KILL WARMECH! PS VERSION

  • in the UK it was realeased like 10 yrs later *SOB*

  • What is the name of the first song?

  • ahhhh reminds me of sitting up late at night in my bed with the TV glowing and this game brightening up the dark room till I could play no more and pass out sometimes with controller in hand. Good times. Now I try to emulate those times, it sure is a nostalgic effect I get from it, it isn't the same, but the fact that we can "replay" our childhoods is fucking amazing. I love video games, without them, I would be dead!

  • @fuckcomments I completely agree. I remember playing Final Fantasy and falling asleep with the controller in my hand. Now I try to do it why balancing work and college. I wish there was more time. :( . I love the nostalgia more than anything.

  • @fuckcomments I completely agree. I remember staying up until I passed out from exhaustion playing Final Fantasy with controller in hand. I now try to play as much as possible while balancing work and college. There isn't enough time. :( I love the nostalgic feeling more than anything.

  • The 1st and 2nd songs are the songs that define Final Fantasy <3

  • 5:03 - Gurgu volcano! <3 I love that they brought it back in IX. :D

  • Pause @ 5:55 OMG Hal gave WarMECH the finger.

  • There are two reasons it's called Final Fantasy. I suppose the first is that Square was going out of business. But there is a reason within the plot it's called Final Fantasy too.

  • @baigandine because it was supposed to be the creator's final video game, so Final Fantasy is fitting.

  • 7:10 best song ever for a final fantasy game

  • This game is the 5hits!

  • 7:10 how is this piece called?

  • NOS FUCKING TALGIA.

  • really i feel ashamed to call myself a ff fan. ive only been there since ff7 because of my stupid age. am i actually a ff fan?

  • @kishire6murcielago I don't see how age can factor into being a fan. If you love ff, you are a fan. (I also regret missing the first ones though)

  • hey, do you know what the name of the second theme is? I cant find it anywhere...

  • This is a fantastic medley of classic 8-bit perfection. Thanks for the great upload.

  • I love the Crystal Theme, its a simple but mystical tune, it draws you into the game.

  • Oh geez...the one that started it all. Man...the memories...

  • It just came out in Europe on Virtual Console. A day after i saw it was on vc i bought wii points. The first Final Fantasy is a real diamond. I realy hope they go on with realsing final fantasy on virtual console in Europe. If we are lucky we might even get 4 and 6.

  • Tiamat is a biiiitch!

  • ahhhh whats the name of the first song! i love it!

  • @boba1mighty What, the Crystal theme?

  • @TheHeroHartmut thanks bro!

  • Thank you for dating them for the North American release dates. I (at least) appreciate it.

  • ive ssen all music of videogames from 1 to this im going to get to your 500 bids im so sure

  • Ineed the name of the song at like 6:00!!!

  • lol... whenever i beat a boss and it says 'terminated' i always think of AHNOLD

  • That HAL guy is crazy.

  • God...the second song, the one that plays when the journey starts...it's so intense I cry every time I hear it

  • Me too. My dad used to play this game 14 years ago, and my brother and I would watch in awe. How lucky we are to have lived AND played Final Fantasy 1!!!

  • @Bacillodikoch Wow. Calm down.

  • @Bacillodikoch I truely believe that "The Prelude" should be more accommodated with newer FF's. It is very intense. Sad how music from the original games "cartridges etc" to now modern games are so different. Seems the composers lost interest in the depth of the songs for the newer games i think.

  • @Bacillodikoch that's why i learned it on guitar, so awesome

  • I only own the remake on PS1 I own all final fantasy number games (except 11) on PS1 and PS2 all great games.

I'm waiting for the nes final fantasy game to come to wii Virtual console, I'm not gonna use emulators.

  • this tune is also in final fantasy 7.never been a fan of the battle system in ff.nice tune though

  • The best, most difficult, most complex FF game. The remake not so much.

HNNNNNG NOSTALGIA! Farthest I ever got was to Kary.

  • 2:15

    EPIC NOSTALGIA

  • Matoya!

  • thank you so much for compiling such great fights along with some of the best videogame music for the NES.

  • LOL at the end you've got a solo blackmage taking on chaos....and he's hitting him with physical attacks!!! Loool ... wow dude. You are an even bigger nerd than me

  • red mage looks sauve.

black mae hides his face from sunlight with hat and cloak.

    that is a red mage

  • 3:10 is so beautiful..

  • Final Fantasy I was released in Japan in 1987 not 1990 :)

  • I'm going to guess and say you haven't watched many of my videos.

North American dates. That's where I live.

  • quite literally the only game I actually got frustrated enough that I actually threw it out the window...and then went out and got it it really is a great game and the music is just as good, just wish the game really wasn't a total bitch then

  • A series with the word 'final' in its title having twelve (so far) sequels is one of the funniest ironies out there today.

  • From what I heard, it was called Final Fantasy because at the time it was one of the last games to be developed by Squaresoft. However, due to its popularity that was clearly not the case. At least this is what I heard, read it in a magazine years back.

  • The first RPG game I ever played on any system. How many times did I replay this game as a kid? Too many.

  • If you can bear all the early deaths, B Belt, B Belt, Black Mage, White Mage makes an unstoppable group in the upper levels. It's funny to think back to how this game started it all for Square... The end all or be all of a dying game company. I would say their gamble payed off. What a legacy they've created.

  • Nothing over-rated about him. He is truly one of the best symphony orchestra composers of our time. He deserves all the recognition he gets for his fantastic works. His music shines and stands alone without the games it was composed for. One Winged Angel, Liberi Fatali, Symphonic Suite 1... I've played them for some pretty picky people and they gave me very possitive feedback about the pieces and wanted to know where I had found them.

  • I've been listening to Locke's theme for three days straight now. I think I may need help. D:

  • @Raligard Thank you for being extremely correct.

  • 4 Black Belts FTW. >: D

Never really could get into the original Final Fantasy. Like most old school RPGs it was a pretty big grind fest. Absolutely love the music, though! The battle music in this one is one of the most memorable. Shame it's used for the bosses as well.

  • still have this for the nes, hard but awesome, the battle music is classic, final fantasy 1 and 6 r the only rpg's that make me look forward to battles, cuz the music is that damn good

  • the main theme still gives me the chills, even with so many variations there have been of it, still beautiful piece of music. nobuo is a legend.

  • i hear they're releasing this on the Virtual Console. definately getting it, even though i know how hard it is compared to later versions.

  • good news this game came out on the virtual console 2 days ago so go download it

  • Great childhood memories :)

  • Fighter,W.mage,B.mage and Thief is the perfect party for begginers.Fighter is the leader and takes down tough enemies thief is fighters offensive support and helps the party escape in sticky situations, white mage is the backbone of the party and heals allies with her white magic, and black mage's black magic can be helpful in dispatching multiple opponents if the party is massively outnumbered.Use these powers to their full ability and no enemie in the game will stand a chance.

  • This game saved a company from bankruptcy and started the greatest rpg series. That's why I play this instead of the remake.I play the legend, not a pretty remake that uses the legend's name.

  • Judging from this video, Hal doesn't appear to be much of a team player...

He's yough, so you might want him on your side, but he'll also kill you.

Is Hal Chuck Norris in disguise?

  • This IS the best series out there. Period. No competition here.

  • Oh man, the Chaos Shrine in 8-bit is epic...and the world theme...and the airship theme.

  • What's even more epic than Chaos Shrine is the remix for FF Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon.

  • Used to hate those purple sorcerers. Never played until 1991. Don't think the release date really matters at all. It was a great game.

  • @boutscias

Black mage, red mage Spam LIT

  • This game is classic. Owned it! Beat it! lol. im enjoying seeing all these old games.

  • is it just me or does the death theme seem like the the theme to the dunwitch horror and a song played in the original wicker man?

  • hey garudoh,

If you don't mind, that release date needs to be edited. The first Final Fantasy game was released in 1987, not 1990.

  • I use the North American release dates for my videos.

  • What? Not for people who live there.

  • I live in North America. I make these videos, thus I put the dates I'm accustomed to.

  • @TechnoEstate Yea! and FF2 is on the SNES and has red box art!

  • That game started it all

  • if it wasn't for this game and their music for this game, they would have gone bankrupt as a company, this game saved the company. i saw a documentary on it

  • That is true. It's how the game got its name!

  • the solo black mage run made me happy to see someone kick chaos's ass with the weakest character in the game (monk/black belt doesn't count)

  • Ha! @ 5:55 it looks like he's flipping the WARmech off - nice.

  • Yea I remember renting this atleast 17 times from blockbuster when I was a kid. I got into it a few years after it was released cuz it always made the "Players Charts" in the nintendo power magazines and I was like well, i should try that game. This and Dragon Warrior III I rented countless times until i finally got them for my birthday/christmas. Best song in this game I think is beyond the temple (temple of fiends revisited) closely followed by matoya's cave.

  • Battle theme always is awesome.

  • Has no one commented yet on fact that the guy in the video is showing all the different solo play-throughs?! Thats incredible. Whoever "hal" is, he is a good gamer.

  • Only reason I even looked at the comments was to see if someone had noticed besides me xD By your words, I'm guessing we're the only ones.

  • 3 theifs?! Thats madness! XD lol I love this game... good ol nintendo... =] My bro and me would take turns sleeping just to play this game.. anyone with a nintendo knows how easy it is to mess up even with the slightest touch. lol

  • My cousin and I would do the same thing! LOL

  • Ahhh...good memories.

  • I used to rent this game, then return it, then rent it again so I wouldn't lose my saved game. I don't know why I didn't just buy it... anyway I made it all the way to the end boss and the game CRASHED right as I walked up to him. I never had the heart to finish it again.

  • ya same hapend to me...last boss then i left it in the sun to long and it reset, i, too have never had the heart to replay it

  • How exactly?

I've played 12 and none of these songs even sound remotely similar.

  • 0:50 -> 1:40

its the music imediatly before Press Start. u know, when fast images of characters and bosses appear

  • Right...

Sorry, didn't notice it until now.

  • yeah...never played these old ones (started with 7)...but no wonder that was one of the only memorable tunes from FF12...it was an Uematsu piece.

  • Yeah, it's one of several FF songs that have been used in multiple games. It was also featured in IV, and probably at least one or two others (I haven't played them all). The part just before it is used often as well, not to mention the victory theme.

  • Yeah, it's kinda the anthem for the entire franchise. Even the song name is the same. (Well, FF3 onwards)

  • my favourite song is garlands theam

  • uggghh!! i need that first song, i've heard it done by a orchestra or something on a Master Sword server awhile ago, i just love the song, idk why....

  • i spent most of my life playing ff1 in the basement lol. make it to the end of the game, change my mind about the party, start all over. i hated the canoe. oh early 90s.

  • wow same here...well the first part.

  • Best. Game. EVER.

  • The red mage looks like a pimp

  • ROFL

    *bows*

  • A what? *blank stare*

  • CLASSIC VGM!!!

  • It's amazing how i recognize a LOT of these songs, and never knew they were from FF.

  • It brings back good memories!

  • I've never played FF1 or FF2. Only from FF3/6 (SNES) and onward. For someone with no classical training, Uematsu-san is just amazing and inspiring.

  • i have a working NES... but why bother when i don't have Final Fantasy nor any other enjoyable game, and buying NES games these days... it's just hopeless.

  • I know, I already have DoS. I just want the NES version as well.

I think the farthest I got without glitching up and deleting itself is Melmond.

  • Listening to this makes me wish I still had a working NES.

Could someone tell me where the music starting at 5:06 is in the game?

  • GBA/DS & FF 1&2 Dawn of Souls ... relive it and take it with you.

  • it is in gurgu vulcano, i'm quite sure of it

  • @aninhaslindas

gurgu, & titan's cave. i think earth cave was the same as Marsh cave

  • in various caves...

it should be played , if i recall right, when you're in the "earth cave".

  • this is a revolution, like zelda

  • I keep wondering why people say this was the worst Final Fantasy game. :/

For me, it was my third favourite of the Final Fantasy series, followed by 5 and 6.

  • Edit: I stand corrected

  • LOL. Never doubt clips of a speedrun. XD

  • A red mage and 3 thiefs? that will never work.

  • Love this game, I like the music way better in 8-bit.

  • I remember renting this years ago & watching my brother play it, I was 5 or 6 I'm guessing. He couldn't get past the goblin army boss around the beginning.

  • uh, excuse me garudoh sir, the game was made in 1987.

  • Aye, but usually the year I include in the vid and description is for the North American release. Also, using 'sir' makes me feel old.

  • Yeah the NA release date was July 12th 1990. Three days before i was born BTW :D

  • i always like the stuff that came with the game, the maps and big book

and i always remember the picture in the right corner of the monster map, anc choas was a shadow so u couldnt see him, like a mystery

  • The official strategy guide for this game was actually a monthly volume that nintendo power released. Like issue #2 i believe

  • Back in the day me and my cuz walked the bridge where the WARmech spawned over and over for exp to max out all of our characters. Good times. Masamune and katana = pwn face

  • Some of these tunes sound familiar... And yet I don't know why...

  • maybe because Final Fantasy has more games xD

and the crystal theme and the battle theme are recurrent and the Final Fantasy theme as well

  • So I've heard. :P

  • interesting note: he is probably the only VG composer with no musical training

  • Just recently beat this after playing the Remake on GBA. Such a wonderful, a genius plan for a company that was fading. Now look, they're on top!

  • It is indeed pretty insane when you think about it. Had this game not been successful, we would've missed out on everything Square since then. Don't even want to think about that...

  • @garudoh

Imo if Nintendo power had not put out that players guide at launch... it would have been spurned as a bad DW clone.... although it was vastly different.

  • The start to Nobuo Uematsu's genius career. You can feel his brilliance even with these limited musical tools. Matoya's Cave and the death music, and the rest... how can 8-bit music sound so good?

  • i've been looking for this clip of ff music forever (the one at the begining). i could listen to it forever. the rest is good too but that makes me close my eyes and think back to my childhood. god that's geeky
