I believe that I get serotonin syndrome like effects from lots of things - melatonin, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, gaba supplements, and tramadol. I have struggled to find something to help me sleep.
I had this from one 10mg of Lexapro. six hours after taking it I had convulsions, body pains, chest pains, headache, diarrhea, sweating, my pupils almost covered my iris, derealization, anxiety, and blurry vision. At the ER my heart rate was 165 and my blood pressure 176/135.
Scientists don't know whether depression causes low serotonin or low serotonin causes depression. We are spirit beings too and it only makes sense the body would respond to thoughts (electrical) of grief, depression, melancholy by lowering a neurotransmitter (chemical) associated with a happy mood. We are electrical beings first, chemical second. Taking SSRIs is like playing Russia Roulette. May be Whitney Houston died from serotonin storm.
20 mg Celexa gave me Serotonin Syndrome. I had never even heard of it and didn't know what it was until I had the worst experience of my life from taking the drug. Violent, full body convulsions, uttering nonsense sounds, shaking, the worst feeling of dread imaginable accompanied by suicidal thoughts and a horrible feeling of derealization. It's been around six months and I still don't feel like I've recovered. I wish I could go back in time and not take those pills.
@TheMedicineGuy No. Just celexa. The first day I felt shaky and a bit nervous, the second day was worse, and the third day I had presyncopal episodes every 5 ten minutes accompanied by nausea. It felt like my brain had split in two different sections, with the left hemisphere running 100 mph. I thought I was going to vomit but instead collapsed to the floor with the seizure-like symptoms. To this day I don't feel the same and that same upper left hemisphere still gets rushes.
I honestly fear that it may have caused irreversible brain damage. I was in a deep depression after the event so afterwards I was put on a very low dose (2.5)mg of Lexapro to see if it would help but it had a similar yet much milder effect (buzzing sensations, head twitching) Taken off that and tried St. Johns Wort, and then later 5 HTP, with similar partial seizure symptoms. I guess I'm just someone who doesn't do well with having their serotonin levels artificially raised.
@TheStreisandEffect That is an unusual reaction to Celexa, especially so early in the course of therapy and without any other interacting substances. But, unusual things do happen. Some people lack the enzyme that is responsible for breaking Celexa down in the body...perhaps that played a role. Who knows. Thanks for sharing your experience, and I do wish you recovery sooner than later.
@redwingsandjazzfan Diagnosing is outside my scope of practice as a pharmacist. Plus, a full workup by a qualified physician is necessary, which can't be done with casual conversation through the internet. I would speculate, however, that SS is unlikely if you have been off the Lexapro for a while and aren't taking any other medications that affect serotonin activity.
Took Lexapro for 2 yrs and back in June I started having heart palpitations. This progressed into vitreous detachments, muscle aches, chest pain, consistent migraines, tremors, irritability and a lot of other things. My doctor ran a lot of tests and everything came up clean. He took me off the Lexapro and it helped briefly but it seems like I'm just getting worse. He has referred me to a neurologist but I've read that SS is treated by more then just taking the patient off the med.
@redwingsandjazzfan The primary treatment of SS is removal of the offending medication(s). Symptoms typically resolve within 24 hours (depending on the half-lives of the offending medications). The syndrome itself can be treated with cyproheptadine, but this is usually not necessary. Symptoms of the disorder can be treated as necessary (seizures or tremors for example), but once again long term medication treatment is not necessary as part of the classic syndrome by itself.
@sidka84 It does have some neurologic side effects, mostly pertaining to CNS depression (drowsiness, sluggishness, etc.). It can lower the seizure threshold, which is an issue in people with a history of seizures or taking multiple medications that do so. And of course, it lends to the risk of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic meds.
Thanks for making this video. It can be caused by mono-therapy (one medicine). I think you can also have a lower stage of SS and then take something like dextromethorphan and send yourself into a full blown episode. My knowledge is less "book" than yours. This happened to me.
Also if you lack a liver enzyme you may not metabolize some meds that cause this.
@ipsurvivor Thanks for watching! You are correct in that serotonin syndrome can range in severity, and that minor serotonin syndrome can become much worse if additional serotonin activity is stimulated by adding another medication.

@TheStreisandEffect Sorry to hear about your experience. Were you taking any other medications or dietary supplements/herbal products?

I nearly died from serotonin syndrome. Was in a coma for two weeks and on life support.
NEVER take effexor and tramadol together....
