I should have thanked you in my first post. This is hands down the best tribute ever to Magic and the Lakers. To hear Chick Hearn is wonderful, far better than to hear some stupid rap song or heavy metal song. This is also some of the best footage ever from Magic. To me no other player has ever came close to how good magic was in his prime, he certainly earned the name. I'm gonna give this vid a thumbs up and add it to my favorites. Thanks for a great Video.
@DoubleVisionandco Yep, that clip is from 89, so he's wearing the "Major League" Indians cap. Here's one: Stu once was going to have Charlie and his pal Rob Lowe on for a quick halftime interview. Charlie doesn't show up and Stu asks what happened to him. Rob explains what the Lakers will look to do in the 2nd half and about Charlie: "He's out there looking for OTHER things." (translation: groupies) Stu laughs.
The playmaking of Magic Johnson, narrated by Chick Hearn! This video couldn't be better. Thanks for keeping Chick's voice and not setting it to music.

@AKADEMENTED And may never go to the playoffs this year if things don't change. They've got a lot of road games coming up, 8 of the next 10, and 6 in a row to start Feb. @AK... Hey, I'm surprised you're giving up so easily. Lakers could top the power rankings after their road trip. Kobe knows. Fisher needs to wake up. Bynum is better than he's been playin'. I want a Bulls vs Laker final. What u want? Lakers vs Bullets? Nets? Of course u don't . u want Kobe vs LBJ. or LA vsCHI. Or u want a cheese sandwich dude. But.. LBJ > KB sorry. But, Magic > Everybody. Go Chicago.
@dave474c hey i wanted the bulls to beat the heat last yr them miami bandwagon fans needed to be put in they place..... but them vs us? finals? noah and boozer fouling out EVERY game early deng rip and rose cant save them. lbj greater than kobe where bron hiding his rings? oh we was just trippin when we thought he went to sleep in all those 4th quarters him bosh and wade talked shit but didnt feel like winning anymore? come on i hate kobe but he better than bron..... durant>lbj
@dave474c Kobe is better scorer than Lebron (always and will be) but Lebron the better player (stats wise) and Durant is a better scorer than Lebron but the Lebron is a better player. But what these guys got over Lebron is that cold-blodded clutch factor.
@jspears19 I agree, except Durant hasn't really shown anymore clutch factor than LBJ. They've both won games in the last minute but no ring between them. There's a good chance the final will be OKC vs MIA this year. It'll a good showdown. If it is, my money will be on LBJ and the Heat. But Durant could've already taken the MVP by then.
Sorry Kobe, things aren't lookin too good for the lakers this year.
@dave474c OKC vs MIA would be amazing but in the playoffs anything could happen. But for the Lakers I think they should pick up Steve Nash or get a great PG for next year
Greatest PG of all time, fuck off with Kobe comparisons they play complete differently positions and styles. Just recognize greatness for what it is and appreciate it.
fastbreak with magic was effective because he could get the ball to the other side, then give it to the finishers in full stride without the finishers having to dribble. they could focus on their scoring move. defense always had to adjust, even if the finisher was designated from the first second. that moment of adjustment, with those finishers, made for an unstoppable break. nowadays, good finishers (griffin,wade,..) don't have that kind of point guard to feed them. not even lebron can do it.
the best thing about this was the true greatness of chick hearn...as a laker fan I know the beauty that was MAGIC but i miss chick every game...RIP chick. we'll always love you
After watching this video about 10000 times, I have come to the conclusion this is the best Magic highlight compilation ever...If you ever get the time, please do a similar one for Big Game James....cheers
I would say the nearest replicas of Magic in order were Oscar, Bird, Grant Hill (pre-injury), Kidd, LeBum, Pippen, Penny (pre-injury), Maurice Stokes, Barkley and Bill Russell who actually resembled Magic at times running the break and making deft passes in the post.
Magic was the best but I wish someone would make a definitive Isiah mix because we always see the same highlights with him too and he was the 2nd or 3rd best passer ever with consideration to Cousy. We'll never get a great Cousy mix but Isiah should happen and he was the greatest ball handler too.
Probably the best highlight video for any player ever. Rare plays, famous plays, assists, post ups, buzzer beaters, circus shots. You have them all. Well done
THAT'S MY DUDE RIGHT HERE!!! I patterned my game round his & been a fan since '79 when Lakers drafted him.Great job on the compilation. You took me back when bball was the shit! I miss seeing my boy Magic doing his thing.
This is an extraordinary upload - the best, best, best, hands down - ever...I am a HUGE Jordan collector, but this eclipses anything I've seen or done...great job! Also, what is that game Magic is playing in, where it seems Bird is a team mate, at about 9:20 in the clips, maybe on UCLA's home court? What year / date was that?!
Beautiful Video. Thanks for putting that awesomeness together. I was lucky enough to become a Laker fan the year before Magic was drafted. Good times! Miss Chick like crazy.
There will be never, ever, be another player like him today. Everyone wants to be the other MJ, the one who would shoot and shoot and score a lot of points to dominate a game. No one after him was able to emulate his style of play exactly as you've been seeing right now.
Lebron's been the closest so far to Magic in terms being able to score, rebound and dish out assists while on the break.
But whose player today has the intelligence and the flare like you've seen in the video above? NO ONE.
This is the greatest basketball video of all time. The fundamentals and intelligence that Magic displays in this is what's lacking in today's basketball. Perhaps it's due to MJ's dominance when he first emerged and subsequent players attempting to mimic that, but you just do not see this kind of lack of selfishness and willing to pass the ball for the greater good of the TEAM as often anymore. Truly, a Hall of Fame player.
WOW, Magic is better than Bird, wrong legged full court shots?!? All the game winners are circus shots, my head will explode! Thanks for whoever made that vid!
@PrinceVicious His name is nonplayerzealot, aka NPZ. Youtube's finest NBA video producer for 3 straight years and counting. Young cunts like LD2k watch his videos in awe.
@500ncb Nah, you're really pushing it. Two different games. Kobe couldn't pass a ball like Magic, but Magic couldn't do half of what Kobe does either. Magic was an awesome player so let's leave it at that.
@500ncb Watch video. Crossover? Posting up? Splitting defenses? Playing the 3 from time to time? Drawing double teams and sometimes triples? Guarding the best team's player? The problem with stats is that they're superficial. There are too many variables. Kobe is far more athletic than Johnson was, but Johnson's game was facilitating and thensome. Two different players. Jordan is overwhelmingly regarded as the best ever and he never passed the ball. Neither is in the top 30 for assists.
@Lakerbballfan Hi, i hope this is just a friendly argument? Anyway, Magic's offense seldom require him to do crossovers to "split defense". however, not shown in this video, he once started at centre in place of Kareem, of course doing post-ups. And i'd like to think players got doubled its because of their more solo style of play. Since Magic is a pass-first pg, its a very bad idea to double him. Well when i said magic>kobe, its from my pov. kobe is very close, no disrespect.
@500ncb Sure, friendly "argument"...why not? Magic played in a fast break offense, and you're right, it didn't require him to do crossovers. He was probably too tall anyway. He didn't have to split defenses either the way Kobe does. When Magic had the ball, the ball did the work. Magic also did postups, but after watching Kobe videos as well, Kobe's better at it. Double teams are in halfcourt offenses. In a fast break, you don't double. There's no time because the ball is in someone else's hands
@Lakerbballfan And I concur, it's all opinion. Magic > Kobe is your opinion which is fine. I wouldn't want to commit to who's better because of their respective games. But Kobe dazzles, no question about it. But watch a video like this and Magic dazzles as well. They're both off the charts spectacular.
@Lakerbballfan There's one intangible that gives the impression that Magic might be better, and that is that fast break basketball is extremely exciting and Magic driving the ball with an array of passes was awesome. Halfcourt basketball isn't quite as exciting. It's like wide open hockey vs grind it out, trap the puck and crush guys against the boards hockey. The former yields more scoring opportunities.
@Lakerbballfan yea u got valid points about running offense there. I rate magic higher maybe its because he has more individualism, has a very unique moveset and groove. Recently I saw a video here on youtube which compares kobe's and MJ's buzzer beaters, and the video shows kobe has much more spectacular and difficult clutches, therefore kobe > MJ. Maybe I was, in my head, telling that guy, "hey, look at magic's buzzers. Magic > Kobe".
@500ncb Magic tends to get higher ratings also because he was a highly rated rookie coming out of Michigan State, and Kobe Bryant all of a sudden came into picture because Jerry West though highly of him. Then Magic excels as a rookie and plays a huge role in game 6 of the 1980 Finals. Kobe Bryant came off the bench for about 3 years before becoming a starter. So Magic barreled in from the get go with spectacular play that got noticed right away.
@Lakerbballfan ... and i believe that most should agree, that historically, magic's game impacted the basketball world more than kobe did. maybe those are the reasons why, when i still rate kobe very high, i rate magic higher.
@500ncb Magic's game was more spectacular. Running, running, and more running. Kobe's game didn't really start until Jackson came to town, and that offense was team oriented and pass, pass, pass. Magic carried the ball downcourt most of the time. And most of THAT time made only one pass...to the guy who was going to score because he already knew who was going where. Then there were the possessions where there were multiple feeds. Magic's game impacted basketball probably as much for his...
@Lakerbballfan ...personality as his talents. People saw his game, and when people see your game, you're going to stick out. Magic smiled and smiled and smiled. Kobe was a bit snarky, introverted, and "leave me alone" when he first came into the league. So that's what people remember. And he got criticized for it big time. But Kobe has come a LONG way. Scoring a ton, and becoming more personable and winning many many fans. And he's caught Magic with rings and may ultimately pass him.
@500ncb your comparing apples to oranges, the two players played different roles on their respective teams, you cant compare them based solely on stats alone
also, your averages for kobe are wrong, its 25.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 4.8 apg.
Watch the play at 8:35-8:42, Magic driving on a fast break, the ball got poked from behind, Magic tapped with his left hand, it bounced back up and he bounced it again with his right hand, the ball went between the legs of the defender and Magic caught it on the other side and scored. Truly Magic!
@maya Good eye, br0. That's why I put that in there. There was a close camera angle facing the play that shows he intentionally dribbled it thru the defender's legs (that was Gar Heard, btw, of the famous shot in the 76 Finals at Boston). The recognition level he had in a split second was stunning even beyond the highlight itself. MJ rarely talked about players that he admired, but in old interviews, he would allude to the MINDS of Bird and Mag before anything else. They were players' players..
@nonplayerzealot4 A personal fave are also the long drives to the rim vs NJ and LAC in the same segment. Defenders went for the ball thinking they were gonna get it and he left them in the dust with some of his trickery. Look how out of the play the Nets defender was in a half-second.
Now THIS is the greatest EVER(IMView)heyyoIf you wanna see THESE CUSTOM '87 SHOWTIME Lakers, Download my rosters if toy have a Ps3 and NBA2k10, I SWEAR that EVERYTHING that the game can do I have Magic and my rosters runnin' like you've seen here. I LOVe this video, may I please have a copy of it to play on my channel. If anyone thinks I'm kidding about my rosters, I have carpool tunnel so I don't play games, I set them up to be played with custom offence and defense, correct jumpshots, freethrow
@JesusInNike23 I clearly stated that James was a "solid" defender (you're either stupid or ignoring that I said that), but no way is he #1 out on the perimeter as you claim. Almost everyone agrees that Iggy and TA are the top two man defenders out on the arc with guys like Sefolosha, Afflalo, Deng and Brewer also near the top of the list. James is a good defender, but he isn't "lock down" like you imply he is. 1st Team All-D is a joke. Kobe made it this year and he definitely shouldn't have.
@JesusInNike23 Iggy is a 2/3 swingman turned PG/SF as he lacked shooting. While he began at the 2, over the last three seasons or so the majority of his time on the floor has been spent at the 3 as a SF, especially on the defensive end. That is unless you consider Jodie Meeks and Willie Green 6'4" SFs dumbass. I also CLEARLY stated that TA was a 2, but the fact that he guards 1-3 puts him in the conversation for best wing defender. The 2 and 3 positions are very interchangeable defensively.
@jswnt Just a wild guess, but I'd be willing to speculate that he either misplaced his jersey or it was stolen, sort of how Michael Jordan once had his jersey stolen and wore #12 for a game. If you'll notice, Byron's last name isn't on the back of his jersey.
@nonplayerzealot4 I'm really glad you decided not to mix any sort of music into this compilation. I much prefer to let the player's play speak for itself and that's certainly the case here. I know it occurred during the twilight of his career during his comeback attempt in '96, but the epic ball fake in Sprewell's face takes the cake for me. That was a true "oh shit he still got game" moment if I've ever seen one.
@JesusInNike23 Andre Iguodala is laughing in your face right now. And even though he plays the 2, Tony Allen did a hell of a job checking 1s and 3s last season as well. The fact that you tried to proclaim James as the #1 perimeter defender last season exposes YOUR lack of credibility.
My comparison of James to Erving is a very basic and simple one, both were/are phenomenal athletes. The buck pretty much stops there when you factor in that James is an inconsistent quitter.
@JesusInNike23 Which is also to say, talking about his defensive or scoring abilities is irrelevant to what I was talking about, which is his style of play, playmaking, dribbling style, sleight of hand, ambidextrous passing. I haven't seen anyone who reminds me of Magic, and that's including Lebron. Some similarities? Sure, but I don't look at Lebron and say 'gee, he reminds me of Magic'. Which is not to say the guys you mentioned aren't great passers, but their games are different.
@JesusInNike23 None of those guys styles are that comparable to Magic. And that's what I'm referring to, if it wasn't clear from my previous posts. I'm talking about his playing style, the way he played the game at his size. I'm not trying to argue about these guys abilities as passers, they're all good passers. Though I still believe Magic is the best passer of the lot, but that's just my opinion. Not sure we need to go round and round the bush debating it, it's just my opinion.
@JesusInNike23 James is much closer to being a Julius Erving 2.0 than he is being an improved Scottie. Scottie's defense was MUCH better than LOLbron's. James is great at the chase down block and he's a good help defender, but his man D is solid at best, he is nowhere near "elite" at that end of the floor. Unless the definition of the word "elite" has changed, I'm pretty sure it doesn't entail a then 33 year old Jason Terry and Shawn Marion taking a crap on you in the Finals.
@JesusInNike23 To varying degrees, Magic had a style that is all his own. I haven't seen one guy come along that makes me think 'he's the next Magic'. And that's because individuality is emphasized more than ever now. The closest I've actually seen to Magic's fastbreak style is probably Kidd, albeit in a much smaller package.
Fantastic job. Truly one of greatest (and more special) basketball players of all-time and a great tribute to the late Chicck Hearn the best in the business.
Wow, NPZ i have to say this is just a great compilation of awesome moves by magic... this wasnt my era, so i wasnt able to see magic live at any time, but i am following ur channel for a long time now. He´s rly a great Player!
Thanks for ur hard work which gives me some lovely minutes here in Germany from time to time ! :)
Quite simply the greatest compilation of highlights of ANY superstar. Rare footage, crisply edited, no bullshit music, and the sweet tones of Chick Hearn's play by play. I pray that the Kobe-loving cunts and teenage Laker fans watch and learn. Magic is the greatest Laker of all time by quite some distance. And NPZ is the greatest NBA uploader by an even larger margin.
@joshd9124 Keep telling yourself that, young'n. I don't care how many off-balance ill-advised 22-footers he hits, Kobe will never be on the level of Magic, Jordan, or Bird. He lacks the brainpower.
@DavoBirmingham2 What a stupid comment, any serious laker fan is appreciative of both Magic and Kobe. Both have brought forth two different eras of great basketball for the franchise. Why even bring Kobe into this? this is a Magic Johnson tribute, who by the way has always shown an appreciation for Kobe's game. These compulsive Kobe haters, just enjoy the damn video...
@DavoBirmingham2 nah man, wrong again, I'm just a regular laker fan and respect anyone who's donned the uniform. Just trynna be objective...btw, why the need for the derrogatories? guess you're even lower than I gave you credit for.
@miafins11 You're not being objective, you're being a slurper. You got respect for Kwame Brown too? You're a birdbrain, getting your panties in a twist cos I said Magic is the GOAT Laker.
@DavoBirmingham2 So we got a mind reader in our hands now, fantastic. Look, I never disagreed that Magic is the greatest Laker, I'll gladly second that. It's just the unwarranted Kobe bashing that is out of place, since I happen to love his game as well. As far as Kwame Brown? he's probably an exception. I always had respect for role players like Cooper, Rambis, McAdoo, Green, Nixon, and some of the less celebrated lakers. Don't paraphrase me bro, I know what I'm saying.
@miafins11 Well then WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?! I didn't bash Kobe, I bashed the Kobe-loving cunts. You know, the fanboys who are Kobe 1st, Lakers 2nd. The ones who think he is the Second Coming and who are more interested in the length of his hair than the team's winning percentage. Come on now, I love Nixon too (Norm and Dick both).
I agree with all of the BSPN analysts who claim that LOLbron is a modern day "Magic"...hahahahaha yeah right.
I agree with that other poster. The closest we've seen to another Magic in terms of court vision and passing is the PHO/NJN era Kidd but he lacked the height and post game of Johnson. In those regards I'd have to say the closest I've ever seen was pre-injury Penny.
Magnificent. I keep waiting for the next phenom that mirrors this kind of passing ability, but he never comes. The closest we ever got was Kidd and he isn't in this stratosphere. At least after Jordan left we got Kobe, who while isn't as good, is maybe 80% the player MJ was. We still haven't got anyone 80% of Magic. When will it happen?!
@antoniorossiz Not anytime soon. For a sport that glorifies high flying scoring, this guy made passing and teamplay into an artform. We've seen a few different 'Jordan clones' in Kobe, Wade, Vince, etc etc but I have yet to see anyone play like Magic, including Lebron who people try to compare him to. Magic WAS and IS totally unique.
Where did he get these ideas to pull passes off like that
It was like playground passes

Magic > Kobe
500ncb 3 months ago 22
@500ncb Nah, you're really pushing it. Two different games. Kobe couldn't pass a ball like Magic, but Magic couldn't do half of what Kobe does either. Magic was an awesome player so let's leave it at that.
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@Lakerbballfan Kobe: 22.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.3 apg.
Magic: 19.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 11.2 apg.
half?
500ncb 2 months ago
@500ncb Watch video. Crossover? Posting up? Splitting defenses? Playing the 3 from time to time? Drawing double teams and sometimes triples? Guarding the best team's player? The problem with stats is that they're superficial. There are too many variables. Kobe is far more athletic than Johnson was, but Johnson's game was facilitating and thensome. Two different players. Jordan is overwhelmingly regarded as the best ever and he never passed the ball. Neither is in the top 30 for assists.
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@Lakerbballfan Hi, i hope this is just a friendly argument? Anyway, Magic's offense seldom require him to do crossovers to "split defense". however, not shown in this video, he once started at centre in place of Kareem, of course doing post-ups. And i'd like to think players got doubled its because of their more solo style of play. Since Magic is a pass-first pg, its a very bad idea to double him. Well when i said magic>kobe, its from my pov. kobe is very close, no disrespect.
500ncb 2 months ago
@500ncb Sure, friendly "argument"...why not? Magic played in a fast break offense, and you're right, it didn't require him to do crossovers. He was probably too tall anyway. He didn't have to split defenses either the way Kobe does. When Magic had the ball, the ball did the work. Magic also did postups, but after watching Kobe videos as well, Kobe's better at it. Double teams are in halfcourt offenses. In a fast break, you don't double. There's no time because the ball is in someone else's hands
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@Lakerbballfan And I concur, it's all opinion. Magic > Kobe is your opinion which is fine. I wouldn't want to commit to who's better because of their respective games. But Kobe dazzles, no question about it. But watch a video like this and Magic dazzles as well. They're both off the charts spectacular.
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@Lakerbballfan There's one intangible that gives the impression that Magic might be better, and that is that fast break basketball is extremely exciting and Magic driving the ball with an array of passes was awesome. Halfcourt basketball isn't quite as exciting. It's like wide open hockey vs grind it out, trap the puck and crush guys against the boards hockey. The former yields more scoring opportunities.
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@Lakerbballfan yea u got valid points about running offense there. I rate magic higher maybe its because he has more individualism, has a very unique moveset and groove. Recently I saw a video here on youtube which compares kobe's and MJ's buzzer beaters, and the video shows kobe has much more spectacular and difficult clutches, therefore kobe > MJ. Maybe I was, in my head, telling that guy, "hey, look at magic's buzzers. Magic > Kobe".
500ncb 2 months ago
@500ncb Magic tends to get higher ratings also because he was a highly rated rookie coming out of Michigan State, and Kobe Bryant all of a sudden came into picture because Jerry West though highly of him. Then Magic excels as a rookie and plays a huge role in game 6 of the 1980 Finals. Kobe Bryant came off the bench for about 3 years before becoming a starter. So Magic barreled in from the get go with spectacular play that got noticed right away.
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@Lakerbballfan ... and i believe that most should agree, that historically, magic's game impacted the basketball world more than kobe did. maybe those are the reasons why, when i still rate kobe very high, i rate magic higher.
500ncb 2 months ago
@500ncb Magic's game was more spectacular. Running, running, and more running. Kobe's game didn't really start until Jackson came to town, and that offense was team oriented and pass, pass, pass. Magic carried the ball downcourt most of the time. And most of THAT time made only one pass...to the guy who was going to score because he already knew who was going where. Then there were the possessions where there were multiple feeds. Magic's game impacted basketball probably as much for his...
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@Lakerbballfan ...personality as his talents. People saw his game, and when people see your game, you're going to stick out. Magic smiled and smiled and smiled. Kobe was a bit snarky, introverted, and "leave me alone" when he first came into the league. So that's what people remember. And he got criticized for it big time. But Kobe has come a LONG way. Scoring a ton, and becoming more personable and winning many many fans. And he's caught Magic with rings and may ultimately pass him.
Lakerbballfan 2 months ago
@500ncb your comparing apples to oranges, the two players played different roles on their respective teams, you cant compare them based solely on stats alone
also, your averages for kobe are wrong, its 25.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 4.8 apg.

Watch the play at 8:35-8:42, Magic driving on a fast break, the ball got poked from behind, Magic tapped with his left hand, it bounced back up and he bounced it again with his right hand, the ball went between the legs of the defender and Magic caught it on the other side and scored. Truly Magic!
mayamaniac 3 months ago
@maya Good eye, br0. That's why I put that in there. There was a close camera angle facing the play that shows he intentionally dribbled it thru the defender's legs (that was Gar Heard, btw, of the famous shot in the 76 Finals at Boston). The recognition level he had in a split second was stunning even beyond the highlight itself. MJ rarely talked about players that he admired, but in old interviews, he would allude to the MINDS of Bird and Mag before anything else. They were players' players..
nonplayerzealot4 3 months ago
@nonplayerzealot4 By the way, on that play, check Heard looking down at the ball as if to say, "Where'd it go?"
nonplayerzealot4 3 months ago
@nonplayerzealot4 A personal fave are also the long drives to the rim vs NJ and LAC in the same segment. Defenders went for the ball thinking they were gonna get it and he left them in the dust with some of his trickery. Look how out of the play the Nets defender was in a half-second.

Kobe made it this year and he definitely shouldn't have.
bruddahmanmatt 3 months ago
@JesusInNike23 Iggy is a 2/3 swingman turned PG/SF as he lacked shooting. While he began at the 2, over the last three seasons or so the majority of his time on the floor has been spent at the 3 as a SF, especially on the defensive end. That is unless you consider Jodie Meeks and Willie Green 6'4" SFs dumbass. I also CLEARLY stated that TA was a 2, but the fact that he guards 1-3 puts him in the conversation for best wing defender. The 2 and 3 positions are very interchangeable defensively.

why was byron wearing 00 at 5:10
jswnt 3 months ago
@jswnt Just a wild guess, but I'd be willing to speculate that he either misplaced his jersey or it was stolen, sort of how Michael Jordan once had his jersey stolen and wore #12 for a game. If you'll notice, Byron's last name isn't on the back of his jersey.
bruddahmanmatt 3 months ago
@nonplayerzealot4 I'm really glad you decided not to mix any sort of music into this compilation. I much prefer to let the player's play speak for itself and that's certainly the case here. I know it occurred during the twilight of his career during his comeback attempt in '96, but the epic ball fake in Sprewell's face takes the cake for me. That was a true "oh shit he still got game" moment if I've ever seen one.
bruddahmanmatt 3 months ago
@JesusInNike23 Andre Iguodala is laughing in your face right now. And even though he plays the 2, Tony Allen did a hell of a job checking 1s and 3s last season as well. The fact that you tried to proclaim James as the #1 perimeter defender last season exposes YOUR lack of credibility.
My comparison of James to Erving is a very basic and simple one, both were/are phenomenal athletes. The buck pretty much stops there when you factor in that James is an inconsistent quitter.
bruddahmanmatt 3 months ago
wow awesome video.. the skill the creativity the talent.
BillGatesMoney1 3 months ago
@JesusInNike23 Which is also to say, talking about his defensive or scoring abilities is irrelevant to what I was talking about, which is his style of play, playmaking, dribbling style, sleight of hand, ambidextrous passing. I haven't seen anyone who reminds me of Magic, and that's including Lebron. Some similarities? Sure, but I don't look at Lebron and say 'gee, he reminds me of Magic'. Which is not to say the guys you mentioned aren't great passers, but their games are different.
dragonyeuw 3 months ago

Unless the definition of the word "elite" has changed, I'm pretty sure it doesn't entail a then 33 year old Jason Terry and Shawn Marion taking a crap on you in the Finals.
bruddahmanmatt 3 months ago
@JesusInNike23 To varying degrees, Magic had a style that is all his own. I haven't seen one guy come along that makes me think 'he's the next Magic'. And that's because individuality is emphasized more than ever now. The closest I've actually seen to Magic's fastbreak style is probably Kidd, albeit in a much smaller package.

Quite simply the greatest compilation of highlights of ANY superstar. Rare footage, crisply edited, no bullshit music, and the sweet tones of Chick Hearn's play by play. joshd9124 3 months ago
@joshd9124 Keep telling yourself that, young'n. I don't care how many off-balance ill-advised 22-footers he hits, Kobe will never be on the level of Magic, Jordan, or Bird. He lacks the brainpower.
DavoBirmingham2 3 months ago
@DavoBirmingham2 What a stupid comment, any serious laker fan is appreciative of both Magic and Kobe. Both have brought forth two different eras of great basketball for the franchise. Why even bring Kobe into this? this is a Magic Johnson tribute, who by the way has always shown an appreciation for Kobe's game. These compulsive Kobe haters, just enjoy the damn video...
miafins11 3 months ago
@miafins11 Why bring Kobe into this? So I can sit back and watch fanboy twats like you take it as a personal affront.

@DavoBirmingham2 nah man, wrong again, I'm just a regular laker fan and respect anyone who's donned the uniform. Just trynna be objective...btw, why the need for the derrogatories? guess you're even lower than I gave you credit for.
miafins11 3 months ago
@miafins11 You're not being objective, you're being a slurper. You got respect for Kwame Brown too? You're a birdbrain, getting your panties in a twist cos I said Magic is the GOAT Laker.
DavoBirmingham2 3 months ago
@DavoBirmingham2 So we got a mind reader in our hands now, fantastic. Look, I never disagreed that Magic is the greatest Laker, I'll gladly second that. It's just the unwarranted Kobe bashing that is out of place, since I happen to love his game as well. As far as Kwame Brown? he's probably an exception. I always had respect for role players like Cooper, Rambis, McAdoo, Green, Nixon, and some of the less celebrated lakers. Don't paraphrase me bro, I know what I'm saying.
miafins11 3 months ago

In those regards I'd have to say the closest I've ever seen was pre-injury Penny.
bruddahmanmatt 3 months ago
Magnificent. I keep waiting for the next phenom that mirrors this kind of passing ability, but he never comes. The closest we ever got was Kidd and he isn't in this stratosphere. At least after Jordan left we got Kobe, who while isn't as good, is maybe 80% the player MJ was. We still haven't got anyone 80% of Magic. When will it happen?!
antoniorossiz 3 months ago
@antoniorossiz Not anytime soon. For a sport that glorifies high flying scoring, this guy made passing and teamplay into an artform. We've seen a few different 'Jordan clones' in Kobe, Wade, Vince, etc etc but I have yet to see anyone play like Magic, including Lebron who people try to compare him to. Magic WAS and IS totally unique.
