If The DC5 sounded that great "live", (as with your recording of "I LIke It Like That") why on earth did they always hide behind a recording and lip sync on tv? I hope Dave Clark has a REAL live recording of a DC5 concert stashed somewhere that he may yet release on iTunes!! I am a life-long keyboardist & songwriter thanks to The Lord blessing me as a kid though Mike Smith and the DC5! Theyu meant the world to me. Thanks for this great post! DC5 Forever!
Dave Clark 5 will live for ever!! along with Brian Jones ,Freddy Mercury,John Lennon,Mama Cass,Bon scott,Jimmy Hendrix,Jim Morrison,John Bonham,Janis Joplin!!!!Rock n' Roll Will never Die!!
My favorite group of the British invasion. Mike Smith had a great rock and roll voice. A great era in rock. I'm glad to have grown up during those exciting times!
I've always considered Mike Smith to have been the definitive rock voice of the British Invasion. From ballads like 'Because', to all out rockers like 'Anyway You Want It', (my two favorites of the period) in my opinion, Mike surpassed them all. Thanks Mike!
This is the closest Ive ever heard the band singing live!!! No band could rock tike the Dave Clark Five plus producing the best ballad to come out of the entire British Invasion, "Because"
Thanks so much for posting this so we can hear how the live shows sounded. These guys were such showmen. RIP Mike and Denis. I'm still glad all over when I hear Mike shout it out.
Mike`s passing so close to their induction to the RnR Hall of Fame was one of the saddest moments of this rock fan`s life. Having followed him and the DC5 for 40+ years and knowing that he wanted to be there in New York and was planning to attend, its just so sad...
Micheal meeting you in 1964 was one of high;ights of my life. Your untimely passing left a huge hole in my heart~~because because i love you my dear friend!
In 1965 when I was 9 years old, 4 friends and I lip synched "Glad All Over" at our school's talent show. I was Dave Clark and thought that was so cool. As I realized Mike Smith was really the star of the group, Mike was my hero. So likeable and talented.
the next do you love me is from their third sullivan show I think and that is a live vocal to another lip sync footage of it is all over youtube and the last "I like it like that" is from the sullivan show in 1965 the footage was released in 1993 on the official dave clark five video collection but the video was overdubbed with the original studio recordin with fake screams almost every dave clark song on that video compilation has the studio recording dubbed over the original broadcast audio
the first song glad all over is definitely pre-recorded backing track the footage is on youtube if you type in dave clark five first visit newsreel or something like that in that vid you can clearly see dave not hitting the cymbals proving they are playing to backing the drums on it were probably done by dave the next bits and pieces is from their second sullivan show and features live vocals with the studio recording allthough dave does hits some drums on it
The great things about these live performances are 1) It proves that Dave Clark did indeed play the drums on his records 2) It proves that they didn't need studio musicians to make their records for them 3) It proves that they were a great LIVE band even before they became famous.
WOW!!! LIVE DC5 ! VERY cool. One of my all time favorite bands. Had the pleasure of seeing Mike on his last tour as well as the DC 5 live back when they released Over and Over. One of Mike's greatest vocals is on a non hit: Don't You Realize? The man had some of the best pipes in the business! Does anyone know what song they did with the extra floor toms on the stage (as pictured here and on the American Tour LP)? THANKS for posting this!!
This was 1 hell of a Band live.Hit after Hit after Hit.They should put a Vox Organ by his grave. Can we just go back to 1964 and freeze time.RIP MIKE,The music will live forever and so will your contributions to the DC-5.
Mike had a fantastic voice, I am very sad that Mike and Denny are no longer with us. DC5 is my favorite group since I was 8 years old, and I am now 52! I love you all guys!
Thanks Boomer 647. Agree with zobajoe-nice pics-esp from the first Sullivan appearance and the concert shots. These live vocals are VERY tight- Most difficult thing to get right on live TV. Mike Smith could sing rock and roll with the best of them. Thanks again...
The Ed Sullivan Show engineers really had noo idea how to properly mic. one of these acts. CBS also used some really archaic limiting and compression equipment that made the sound pump and sound muddy-making Dave's drums sound dead and dry.. If you see some Brit TV at about the same time you'll notice the sound mixing is much better.
Summer 1969, I'm in Harwich, Cape Cod Massachusetts. Local kid, Dave Lewis, told me Mike Smith of the DC5 was staying at a yellow cottage on the river. Dave was prone to telling tales and I was skeptical. Calling his bluff, we hopped in his little boat and approached the cottage. Mike!! I screamed from the bow. Mike!!! A few minutes later, out walks Mike himself looking as he did at 3:30 on your video. "somebody spoke and I went into a dream"...he was utterly charming..MS, thanx 4 the memory.
Very nice tribute! It was nice to hear what sounded like live vocals rather than the usual lip-sync! The concert photos were great to see as well. It was nice to see something that I hadn't already seen dozens of times over.
Bravo! Very, very nice video, boomer647. I'm guessing those first few pix are from their first Ed Sullivan appearance of Glad All Over? The pix certainly appear to display that their music instrument wires are apparently plugged in. Does this mean that particular GAO appearance was indeed truly 100% live? I ask because I previously had that particular video of GAO uploaded and their were agreements/disagreements from various commenters as to whether their first ES was truly live. Thanks.
RIP Mike......you were absolutely Yummy !!!!!!
DC5 THE BEST OF THE BRIT INVASION !!!!!

This is a live recording of Bits and Pieces and Do You Love Me? As you can tell, they are kicking butt.
The drum rolls sound just like they do on recordings. The background singing is dead on key too.

Let's hear it for live vox. These guys were insanely good.

These guys were a massive hit at the time of the Beatles and knocked them out of the number one song, a few times. They were high energy, esp. live.

Yes. Mike was the lead singer, and he had a FANTASTIC voice with this great bluesy growl only he could do-a true virtuoso
