Yes, you can just use the wifi, but you won't have net access unless you're in a hotspot. You can actually use wifi and use safari and the app store and all that without even having a sim card in the phone.

looks like the speed of the internet is worse than dial up. I was considering an iphone for T-Mobile because I have an unbeatable plan (Unlimited everything for 44.99) and I don't want to trade services to ATT for over $100 for the iPhone plus limited minutes. The iPhones work amazing on ATT but not as amazing on T-Mobile from what I can see and what people are saying.
I went into a TMobile store just over a month ago to shut one of 2 phones off. When I called customer service at the store the guy on the phone told me I qualified for a "Loyalty" program. I have been with TMobile for 8 years. When I first got their service I noticed yearly discounts on my bills. But the new service is by far the best plan. $44.99 for unlimited everything except texts. The slow TZones is one of the biggest reasons for needing to switch, but I will not enjoy the cost increase.
Oh, I don't know if it requires 8 years or not for the plan, it may require less. I would call customer service to see what they can do. Just mention the LOYALTY program and see how long it takes. If all else fails, I have been hearing a lot of people getting discounts on their service if you mention wanting to switch services for the iPhone at AT&T. Take care and hope that helps!

it's cellular data, it's supposed to be slow... You're connecting to something multiple miles away, what do you expect? Plus you're limited to GSM EDGE data (2G), so it'll be slower.

You know Tmobile has a plan now to offer internet for the iPhone. Its the Smart Phone Unlimited Web, 24.99 per month, same as the blackberry data plan, also 24.99, but trust me, MUCH FASTER !!!

You're stuck with $10/$20 plans that are capped to 50 or 100mb, or if you want unlimited data you need to get $25 (400 text) or $35 (unlimited text) plans. If you don't mind paying an extra $25 for EDGE speeds then go for it.
If you want to watch youtube with edge, try downloading mxtube in cydia and you will be able to stream videos with edge. For those of you folks who can't watch youtube from the actual application, this could be your work around. Youtube doesn't work for me but mxtube does. Good luck guys

yes you need to jailbreak, no tzones hack actually prohibits the apn from working in 2.1. and about itunes i use itunes 8 and turbosim on tmobile and it hasnt done anything to mine

Jailbreaking and Turbo Sim do not violate your iphone 3G warranty. Only hardware unlocks void the warranty, which no one knows how to do anyways, yet.

That sounds great. The biggest advantages to jailbreaking your iphone 3G, is being able to utelize Cydia, which then allows you to customize your iphone to ones personality. Another great thing about Cydia, is that it also offers games such as an NES Emulator, which is free and is a really good time killer for someone in between classes or on road trips. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
I used all the steps you mention and it did work for one hour or so then the edge logo disappear, I troubleshoot it using your other video and it did work again for few hours than same thing. No edge logo and not internet connection. I am using iPhone 3g 2.1 with Gevey-3g. Also I cut my sim card because I previously have 1st Gen iPhone. Please help.
Another tip that worked for me, is to make sure you delete apn and then delete your usage, then restart the phone, re enter the apn and then toggle data roaming on. It should come right back on.

When you use an non-native carrier service with your iPhone, it the edge will not work with the iTunes store or the App Store, everything else, including Maps and YouTube should work, well at least mine does.
So today I looked at my iPhone, and instead of saying "T-Mobile" in the top left corner, it said AT&T again, BUT, strangely, with my T-Mobile card inserted. I thought this was great help to hear that the Gevey 3G card has been working for other people as well so I know what to expect ;-) However, my Gevey 3G card kinda stopped working for me today. I have the iPhone 3G, 2.1 FW, and a T-Mobile Sim Card from Germany, but I am in the U.S. and bought the iPhone in the U.S. with an AT&T Contract.
It means that the edge network is not available in your area, but GPRS is, which means you can still access the internet, but it will be a tad bit slower than the edge network.
the vpn is virtual private networks to use it like cisco and stuff like that. in other words business' wifi networks that are secure. APN is different you are in the wrong section.
I set my ANP to what you said and it worked great for about 16 hours. Then also like you said it stopped working...... so I cleared all my data and reset my phone but it didn't work!!! :( Can you please see if there is a fix to this?
your video was a great help. it work 100%. i cant get my edge network back on. it was working for a day or 2, with tzone. i also tryed easering my usage data, nothing happed.youtube works fine on wifi
The edge network is somewhat tricky. If you went ahead and reset usage and restarted the phone and it still hasnt regained connection, I would say its probably your area, because I was in out of town the other day and it only worked in different locations.
When you get the new sim, just call T-Mobile and give them the serial number of the new sim card, then they will assign that number to your account, which will then authorize to work under your phone number.
It will work, but I do not recommend it. To save yourself the problem of the sim card getting stuck inside the phone, just purchase one for about five bucks.
Besides that, every time I get the "could not connect to the internet" msg and go back to cellular data network the APN is blank again. Do you know what could be causing it?
Enter the correct APN and then turn off the phone, it should then be saved in your network settings. Let me know if this is a verified solution or not.
Well, I tried... first of all, is it EPC or ECP on the APN?
Second: is it t-mobile or tmobile?
Third: I tried several different combos and the same msg came up: Safari cannot open the page... could not activate cellular data network: you are not subscribed to a cellular data plan. (* I activatd T-zones saturday, it's working and the Tzones hack is installed)
The APN is in the more info section. In order for this to work you must not have the T-Zones Hack installed. For some reason, the hack conflicts with the new APN, so if you installed it, remove it via Cydia.

T-Zones is a 5.99 internet package available through tmobile, the steps to get it to work are in the video, and MyFaves works just fine with it, but you can only change your myfaves through the tmobile website instead of using the iphone.

if you're unlocked on t-mobile you can't get 3g. The radio that is required for at&t 3g and t-mobile 3g is different. You'll only be getting edge.

No, you won't be charged for using the phone for data over wifi. Your phone will be sending and receiving data over a router, not a satellite.

Yeah, in referance to SisowatVanivan question, what do you mean it does not reconnect after airplane mode? Does that means it is broken, or can I simply remove it and reinstall for reconnection?

settings> general> reset> reset network settings.....you will have to re-enter your apn though or u can just turn your phone off then on

hi, in addition to installing the TurboSim and setting APN to epc tmobile com, do I need to jailbreak my iPhone 3G and install tzones hack before be able to use tmobile tzones?
Also, will iTunes 8 or later damage TurboSim like the previous guys posted?

yes you need to jailbreak, no tzones hack actually prohibits the apn from working in 2.1. and about itunes i use itunes 8 and turbosim on tmobile and it hasnt done anything to mine

The only difference is that one is cheaper than the other. The both use the edge network, so the transfer rate is the same.

You wouldn't need it for the 2g iphone, because the guys at the iPhone dev team can successfully software unlock the phone, no turbo sim required.

Jailbreaking and Turbo Sim do not violate your iphone 3G warranty. Only hardware unlocks void the warranty, which no one knows how to do anyways, yet.

That sounds great. The biggest advantages to jailbreaking your iphone 3G, is being able to utelize Cydia, which then allows you to customize your iphone to ones personality. Another great thing about Cydia, is that it also offers games such as an NES Emulator, which is free and is a really good time killer for someone in between classes or on road trips. I used all the steps you mention and it did work for one hour or so then the edge logo disappear, I troubleshoot it using your other video and it did work again for few hours than same thing. No edge logo and not internet connection. I am using iPhone 3g 2.1 with Gevey-3g. Also I cut my sim card because I previously have 1st Gen iPhone. Please help.

Another tip that worked for me, is to make sure you delete apn and then delete your usage, then restart the phone, re enter the apn and then toggle data roaming on. It should come right back on.

Hi, i have this other unlock sim and it works ok with tmobile but when i went to download music from itunes it said the carrier was not known so i cant download music to the phone.. Do you know if this same problem happens with that sim card that you bought???

When you use an non-native carrier service with your iPhone, it the edge will not work with the iTunes store or the App Store, everything else, including Maps and YouTube should work, well at least mine does.

So today I looked at my iPhone, and instead of saying "T-Mobile" in the top left corner, it said AT&T again, BUT, strangely, with my T-Mobile card inserted. I can still make/receive phone calls as well as SMS, the only difference is that it says AT&T now. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? I am going to Germany in 4 days, hope it'll say T-Mobile there...

Hey, thanks for the video. I thought this was great help to hear that the Gevey 3G card has been working for other people as well so I know what to expect ;-) However, my Gevey 3G card kinda stopped working for me today. I have the iPhone 3G, 2.1 FW, and a T-Mobile Sim Card from Germany, but I am in the U.S. and bought the iPhone in the U.S. with an AT&T Contract.

It means that the edge network is not available in your area, but GPRS is, which means you can still access the internet, but it will be a tad bit slower than the edge network.

the vpn is virtual private networks to use it like cisco and stuff like that. in other words business' wifi networks that are secure. APN is different you are in the wrong section.

The edge network is somewhat tricky. If you went ahead and reset usage and restarted the phone and it still hasnt regained connection, I would say its probably your area, because I was in out of town the other day and it only worked in different locations.

When you get the new sim, just call T-Mobile and give them the serial number of the new sim card, then they will assign that number to your account, which will then authorize to work under your phone number.

It will work, but I do not recommend it. To save yourself the problem of the sim card getting stuck inside the phone, just purchase one for about five bucks.

Enter the correct APN and then turn off the phone, it should then be saved in your network settings. Let me know if this is a verified solution or not.

Well, I tried... first of all, is it EPC or ECP on the APN?
Second: is it t-mobile or tmobile?
Third: I tried several different combos and the same msg came up: Safari cannot open the page... could not activate cellular data network: you are not subscribed to a cellular data plan. (* I activatd T-zones saturday, it's working and the Tzones hack is installed)

The APN is in the more info section. In order for this to work you must not have the T-Zones Hack installed. For some reason, the hack conflicts with the new APN, so if you installed it, remove it via Cydia.

T-Zones is a 5.99 internet package available through tmobile, the steps to get it to work are in the video, and MyFaves works just fine with it, but you can only change your myfaves through the tmobile website instead of using the iphone.
