YES he did get shot down! read the books that have lucases emblem on it. General greivous got shot down 10 years befor anikans birth. he was a warroir among his people. but when he was going to a battle hisshuttle crashed. sidous had taken a good interst in him at that time (or dooku i dont remember wich had taken the interest) and came to heal him and turn him into a droid but it took several yrs to recover and make up his reputation again and that was when anikan was a padawan.
