I found the attempts at humor off-putting, toilet jokes and shallow homophobia; the kinds of fare you'd expect on a schoolyard. On that thread, yeah, like many truly repellant films released lately, it managed to be simultaneously homoerotic and homophobic. And as for incoherent: it repeatedly introduced irrelevant plot elements, the plot itself was incredibly thin, and the characters were wooden and nonsensical.

Also incredibly melodramatic. The only laughs I was able to get from the film were unintentional, like William Defoe's idiotic ejaculation, "There was a GUN FIGHT!!!" half-way through the picture. Given the incredible reverence paid to the violence in the film, (prayers, symphonic mock-conducting, 6th grade pseudo-philosophical rambling) it seems like the humor is horribly, horribly out of place, and in rather incredibly poor taste.

And finally, given your misreading of the word 'ethically,' it's understandable how you might fail to understand how morally hateful this picture is. The impulse to vigilantism may be endemic to the human condition, but its roots are in simple blood-lust. This film does little to complicate legitimate questions regarding the limitations of the justice system, instead merely fetishizing violence, endorsing brutality for a generation that already sees too much of the stuff. The scene in the confessional marks one. Willem DaFoe's conflict between man's law and the laws of God is one such example. You'll probably be sure to point out that Willem eventually winds up on the side of the 'Saints'. It doesn't change the fact that this argument is represented.

What you ignore almost completely is the fact that aside from little boy giddiness, the 'Saints' themselves never raise themselves above anyone else (most of that is done by Rocco and the people that support their actions). They're given 'Super Man' status by various elements of society.
