  • @pippinhill, is there any pronunciation of Deserie '57/Desiree '67 by the Charts that wasn't Deseree like KEY? In 1971, Laura, Nyro personally attributed the song Désiree pronouncing it, Deseray, like gay. That's what her version was, an open expression of same-sex attraction , on the down low, to her soul mate, Maria Desiderio. Nyro came out from under the covers on Gonna Take A Miracle, an otherwise album of slavish covers. I think the Charts '57 version Deserie is the bomb. props hwaj5300

  • @rabdrake2447 my name is Desiree pronounced Desriray.i prefer to be said the way it looks des ir reeeeeeLOLLL

  • Hey Leroy, is Joe Greer still with us ? You need to tell the folks that Desiree' is french and the american answer is Deserie. Unless of course you like Des-a ray instead of Des-a-ree. Plus its Latin for Most desired one. John Moppsy Davis

  • @pippinhill

  • Hey Leroy of The Charts: One Great Tune, my friend, I was in Oyster Bay Long Island in the summer of 61, The Gents were practicing at one of their houses and the piano player for the Chantel's Jimmy Upchurch was there and just had his baby girl and named her Deserie. I loved the name and song so named my daughter who came along in 68, Deserie Justine Davis . My best friend at the time was Jimmy Roselino who was the italian guitar player for The Gents. • Or-gasma-tron!! The emotional roller coaster we were on in the 50's and 60's was sort of like you see in the movie Grease. Discovering new love, dancing, perfume, hot rods, drive in movies, We had a hard time sleeping at night, thinking about the girl we loved. Hated homework, just wanted to play records, watch Bandstand, etc. Desiree is a lasting trophy to these great artists.

I have a variety of music too, but Doo Wop is my favorite, and your taste is impeccable!!

  • @hwaj5300

My have it, too. With some creative percussion this could have been the best ballad ever. As is there few better anywayz.

  • Have the original 45 on Everlast label...one of my all time favorites. Check out the Charts "greatest hits" on CD.

  • Hold onto the 45 most likely to be worth money if it is the original

    Hwaj5300

  • Walk down 7th ave at this time and you hear this song playing.

  • Timeless Indeed

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • NYC was and always the Capital for Doowop

  • CHARTS WHAT A GREAT OLD DO WOOP

  • Does anybody know the tabs or can work it out, I can not find them anywhere on the net, I think this would be great to sing and play! thanx

  • Standard R&R progression. In key of C = C, Am, F, G7

  • thanks! I've been playing guitar for 17 years and still have trouble with such simple songs like this, lol but can play songs like Paradise City ect.. by ear, I don't get it.....lol

  • Glad it worked for you. I can't play worth s**t. I'm an old guy and this was the first progression I was taught around '63. It is the foundation for hundreds of R&R songs.

  • Incidentally, the uptempo 60s re-recording of this classic for WAND, was a big spin on the UK Northern Soul scene C.1972! - notably at the legendary 'Torch' allnighter, in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.

  • Good but Laura Nyro's version takes this song to an achingly heartbreaking level.

  • Doo-Wop at it's Finest =) Cool Post

  • the most beautiful doo WOP!

eduardo - são paulo - brasil (unfortunately the land of soccer and samba)

  • Another great blast from the past, great vocals! Was always one of my favorites when it aired back then in the 50s!

  • Great song. Let's not forget the lead singer on this song. His name is Joe Greer. Great voice. Hope you are doing well Joe. Good Luck, Ricky

  • rickysrocket JOE "GRIER"

  • This is one of the best of it's time, sexy, captivating, soulful, haunting, this doesn't exist today.

  • WITHIN THE STATE OF MAINE, WE HAVE A CITY NAMED BANGOR....WE ALSO HAVE A GIRL NAMED DESERIE JUSTINE DAVIS WHO IS NAMED AFTER THIS FANTASTIC TUNE. IN 1961 i WAS IN OYSTER BAY L.I WITH A GROUP CALLED THE GENTS WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG. I BELIEVE JIMMY UPCHURCH THE PIANO PLAYER OR DRUMMER FOR THE CHANTELS NAMED HIS DAUGHTER DESERIE ALSO. i KNOW THAT JERRY BLAVAT THE GEATER WITH THE HEATER, PHILLY DJ, NAMED HIS DAUGHTER DESERIE . JUSTINE , THE DON AND DEWEY' HIT DOO WOP FOREVER ,MOPPSY DAVIS

  • I saw the Charts on a Public TV promotion recently. It was the first time they performed together in 40 plus years. They were still GREAT!!!! Love this song and always have.

Sorry for the shameless plug, but check out the g2g love song list #3 Désiree. Laura Nyro beautifully attributes this classic doo-wop, turning into a Sapphic paean.

  • I feel the same way you do fabulous song my favorite oldie of all time.

  • Interesting research information, and a clever slide show! Thanks.

  • I remember calling the radio station when I was 14 years old and asking the DJ, the late great Georgie Woods in Philly, to play this for me. He did and he called my name as well. I was a celeb at school.

  • It's not "doo wop" it's "wah wah" their singing. Written by future hit-maker, Les Cooper (Wiggle Wobble). Danny Robinson's pro-duction is classic Harlem doo wop.

  • God dammed this is MUSIC

  • oooohhhhh... I LOVE THIS OLDIES ONE OF MY #1 FAVORITES

  • Leroy- an ongoing debt of gratitude from a

lifelong group harmony fan who still considers

the originals to be the greatest. Live long and prosper.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you Leroy Binns! This is my favorite all time song. I saw the Doo Wop show on PBS and donated to the station so I could get the CD's with Deserie. That's the song I wanted the most and that's why I donated. Long live Doo Wop!

  • no wonder people are depressed in the end days radio filled with politcal robots. people hiding their feelings. too many mooks with condesending comments people get ready theres a train a comin hop on board! long live the doo-wops john

  • Thanks Harry for this Awesome video. DJ Jerry Blavat played all the songs by the Charts especially "Deserie" in the early 60's in Philly. We white kids were introduced to this rhythm and blues music by Jerry Blavat and now almost 50 years later this music still sounds great.FYI Jerry Blavat named his daughter after this song. Roy(Linda's boyfriend).

  • Hi, My name Is Leroy Binns, orignal member of the Charts, and I just want to take this time to thank all of you nice people for your support and for making me feel good about your comments, God bless you all.

  • Hi Leroy, I just want you to know that Deserie WAS and IS my all-time favorite song. Your voices are so beautiful!!! I used to play this on my little blue record player (lol) over and over and over when I was a kid. Thank you so very very much for the pleasure you've given everyone with your great music.

  • Leroy, thank you for one of the important Doo Wop songs of all time. I hope you know just how incredible a sound like yours, has moved the souls of so many, and still does so many years later. Thank you and God bless you.

  • Hi Leroy. Saw you guys on the T.J. Lubinksy show from Pittsburgh. You guys were great. Is Joe Greer doing well? Who was the 3rd guy in your group that night ? I think your original group had 5 members making up the Charts? Good job all around. I love your music.

  • @treetop721 Leroy, actually it's US who should be thanking you and your buddies for having thought up this beautiful tune and blessed us with a fine, fine performance. I only vaguely remembered it until a friend of mine posted it from an old survey a few months back and I hunted it down on this website. This is a gorgeous tune beautifully performed. Did you guys have to make several cuts before a final version was released or was it perfect on the first try?

  • @MrOcto8

    Amen .....And thanks again Leroy

    Hwaj5300

  • The Charts, how in the name of the Lord could kids, just in the beginning of their teen years sound this good? What are the kids of today doing with themselves other then sounding stupid. They should be out there doing what the Charts did at such a tender age, singing Doo-Wop, the greatest sounding music to one's ear.

  • I named my daughter Deserie after this song. Shes 16 now, not that many girls are named Deserie !!

  • I always wondered who did the original. Now I know! I got introduced to the song through Laura Nyro's version. Thanks!

    Blessings,

    Andrew
