Petsmart was always nice about picking out toys, usually I'd bring in my senegal and let him pick out a few things. I would know he would like it because he wouldn't snatch it from my hands and throw it to the ground
@BirdNerdd Perhaps you've just recieved the bird in question (as the comment says that it was posted a week ago, quite apparently). I'm also interested in getting a Senegal parrot. Any advice? I'd like to know where you are buying from and how cheaply you can come by them.
are senegals as easy to tame as cockatiels? I have to get rid of my cockatiel unfortunantely and I'm thinking of buying a senegal sometime in the future
@white0nerdy I got rid of the poor guy(a few days ago) because I moved and my parents can't take care of him and neither can I... I'm thinking of buying a Senegal somewhere in the future, like a couple of years from now... I still miss the little bastard to much
i was wondering what type of items you use and can u get them at just a craft store, i just bought quite few toys from the pet store (some of them 8+$ a piece) and my senegal wants nothing to do with them, so i am thinking making toys myself would be cheaper what items do u reccomend?
@Brynnabee The craft store has lots of inexpensive things! Wooden popsicle sticks, lollipop sticks, plastic beads of all shapes and sizes, unpainted wooden shapes, unfinished wicker baskets, bamboo weaths, jute or hemp twine to tie things together (just make sure the pieces are short and there are no loops to get caught in). Don't buy leather strips at the craft store though - they are treated with a chemical that is toxic to birds (continued...)
@wnibeck At the hardware store, get stainless steel or nickel plated quick links to hang things (don't buy galvanized or zinc plated hardware, again toxic). Other things Kiwi loves are plastic bottle caps, empty pill bottles, empty oatmeal boxes, pen caps, ballpoint pen with the ink and spring taken out. Take a treat and wrap it up in a piece of coffee filter and hide it. Birdy fun doesn't have to be expensive!
ahh i get my baby poicephalus senegalus mesotypus (orange bellied senegal) in 15 days!!! soooooo excited. its gonna be m first ever bird. i hopei goes well. my dad is gonna driv all the way to wales to pick it up!! (we are near london)
I have a senegal as well. A sennie without a swing is a sad sennie indeed. I hope you have one for yours! They will swing fro hours! So nice to see your birdies has each other to play with. People shouldn't have birds unless they have at least two! :) Great job on the toys! I put seed in grocery bag paper, wrap it up and they have a blast!
Senegals are a little bigger than cockatiels. It's deceiving because the cockatiel has a long tail and a senegal has a stubby tail, so they're about the same total length. But the sennie is heavier and stronger. My cockatiel weighs 86g, the senegal weighs 135g.
@ frooto2 - My senegal is usually wary of *anything* new that we bring into the house. When we buy a new toy, we put it first near the cage (but not inside) and let her get used to seeing it without having to be near it. After a few days, we move it closer (or hang it on the outside of the cage). Then we give her the chance to investigate (i.e. bite it) before sticking it in her cage. Sometimes I will even bite the thing (crazy I know, but it seems to convince her that the thing is safe!)
I didn't use glue, the sticks have notches cut into them so they lock together. They're like popsicle sticks that you can build with. I got them at the craft store. Satisfying for him to tear apart without too much effort! I bet your birds would enjoy them too. That said, I have read that you can use plain Elmer's white glue on bird toys and it is safe for them.
Are these two types of parrots able to play and interact nicely together?...i was thinking of getting a senegal parrot and i already have a cockatiel...
Senegals don't really "play well with others" unfortunately. They don't usually get along with other bird species. Cockatiels are very docile and could be easily hurt by a sennie. In this video when I picked up Kiwi, it was because he wanted to go after Chickie. I never leave them together unattended. However, if you're careful you can certainly enjoy owning both kinds of birds. They do call to each other and Kiwi gets upset when I take Chickie out of the room :-)
Your cockatiel looks like mine :)

@filcett If you have to get rid of your cockatiel, isn't it a bit unfair to get a Senegal?

Your birds are adorable!

What are the supplies that you would suggest a homemade toy beginner to start to collect? And where would I find these things? =D

The Senegal is beautiful, I love these birds. I haev a mini macaw, quaker and a goffin.
I am curious about the wood stick toy, what did you use to glue the pieces together?

Oh and one other thing I forgot - don't let the cockatiel land on the sennie's cage or it could lose a toe!

LOL i have a cockatiel and a conure and when the conure picks up stuff with it''s feet my cockatiel tries to copy it and falls over
