Seriously?! You do not shove the horse's face away from you with your hand, number one. This could make the horse head shy or angry and cause injury to the horse or person trying to halter the horse. Second, You do not sling the rope around the horse's neck and slap it on the side of the neck with the rope. This could spook the horse and cause injury to the horse or person trying to halter the horse.
Thank you. I'm writing a book about a horse trainer on an Indonesian island, and this video helped. Little Girl, you have a way with horses. (LOVE the older sister's reaction to little sister at 2:12, ha!)
This is an adorable video!! I was working with some children who were in the 5 year old range and taught them how to bring the horses head down so they could reach to halter the horse. Using the lead rope around the neck.. create a tension ( slight tension) on the lead rope in the downward position.. when the horse gives any amount of try.. stop the pressure at that moment and rub them.. keep doing this asking for a bit more at a time remember to always release the pressure and rub them :)
How do you get ahold of the horse before? I have a mare that her hatler is rubbing off the hair on her face and I want to start taking her halter off. But she's always had an halter on and never gone without one. So how would i start off training her for this
you walk towards their shoulder, not looking directly at them. Stand next to them, and then put the end of the halter rope around their neck and hold it by both ends. Then put the halter on them. You don't look directly at them, because it makes them most often move off, because when a horse wants another horse to move, it looks directly at the other horse. But if you just kind of go up there unthreatening, almost like your just going somewhere else, they will usually stand there.
Thank you Lea this was an excellent video.
