It sounds like the cover to the ignition chamber had a little movement in it - so the metal sheet would move a little when the pressure changed as it was ignited. Screwing the cover on a little tighter (which would of been done when it was opened up) would be the likely cure.

Ignition system was replaced. No more metallic clang before re-ignition and near silent operation.
