  • It sound kinda jazzy

  • Your guitar is fucking awesome...!

  • Hey is rolling the 1st finger from the b to the high e string (1:12) realy necessary or is muting the b string with the right hand enough? That way the first finger doesn't have to move which seems easeir to me...

  • Very cool thx !

  • thanks

  • Very cool lick... Thanks..!

  • ERES MUY MUY BUENO , GRACIAS POR COMPARTIR , ERES EL MEJOR.

    SALUDOS FROM MEXICO.

  • great playing good note selection. really helpful...

  • tab please? xD

  • que loucura meu estou aprendendo a tocar com tigo ...... valeu....

  • Very cool lick, and awesome playing.. But should I play it over the I, the IV or the V chord ?

  • @Mr3dsensei his is the blues!!! same lick can be played over the I the IV, and could be played again on the V, but it makes it boring and monotonous, so don't overuse thar trick

  • @swingmanu I meant "This is the blues..."

  • hi

  • fuck playing this with my ibanez!

  • i like this lick. great taste

  • Ebony fingerboard and black pickups is not really the blues

  • @Emil019b Lmao. Since when did you have to have a specific guitar to play the blues?! The blues isn't the guitar, it's the player and the soul!

  • @jsg072 Sorry, ofc feel, and all that kinda things is way more important, it was just a stupid way of saying u could get a better blues tone with different fingerboard. The color of the pickups doesnt change the tone... :)

  • I play blues all the time, and I use .12-.48's, and hearing thin, weak high treble tones and other strings... God, it is terrible haha. But, very well done! I'd say this dude is one of the bests on YouTube as far as teaching and playing goes.

  • Great licks thanks for teaching us!

  • this is most the beautifull guitar i ever seen

  • good

  • recently started learning, and this is my challenge, to be able to play this ;) it sounds awesome.

  • Excellent lesson!!!! when teaching blues to my students I find teaching the notes and bends (etc.) is easy but it is so hard to teach them the feel.

  • wonderful lesson-thank you

  • Is he reading a teleprompter?

  • Beautiful Guitar !!

  • i have a patriot custom

  • Rotren, you. are. awesome

  • cool lessons men! It's so good i can now play this lick with my finger in ass!

  • BB king much?

  • yeah nice guitar men your cool..

  • That's the name of the guitar ? :S

  • What is that guitar?

  • @KPLUGP Michael Kelly Patriot Shadow.

  • @rotren Thats the name of the guitar? o-o

  • No tabs? hehehe

  • Loved the demo, and had fun working it. I'm not a good guitarist in the blues yet so I'm always looking to find someone who I can relate to. So thank you again.

  • very nice lick!

  • Hahaha.. Was that a BB king at the end at the first lick?

  • @josueissa Not everything has to be fast to be good dude

  • Excellent

  • thanks for the lick!

  • Another nice lick, Robert, clearly shown as usual. Alternative is to slide on the b string from 5th to 3rd fret. Seems easier for me! I don't usually bother learning other people's licks, but I took that swing riff too... very nice! (I think it's you demonstrating at watch?v=tgCI7rWmSxY)

  • Man, thanks. This is my favorite youtube lesson so far. You take nothing for granted and just simply show a lick in simple segments (that one can hear on bunch of recordings). Thanks again for posting such an easy-to-follow lesson. I can now play my first blues lick.

  • mrmtm11 very good!! sounds like a Robert Dean style lick...cool

  • Tx fellow musician..I like it:)

    Nice ax too!

  • NICE LICK

  • dude thnx alot i learned it its cool

  • Wow I love that guitar! Cool blues lick, too.

  • thanks for the lick! i liked it very much.

  • this lick doesnt strictly use the notes from the A minor scale, it has some additions, how/ why is this? Im at the stage in playing where i can comfortably jam in the minor scale and am trying to move forward into more advanced techniques. Any advice? Thanks.

  • @dizzinicol Learn modes bro :)

  • @dizzinicol It uses the minor Petatonic Pos.1 + the blue note , and D# but it's the 3th of A.

If you have mastered the pentatonic scale and blues scale in all 5 positions you can start using Dorian and Mixolydian mode. When it gets to the point that scales are not enough anymore start using Arpeggios(Dom7, Maj7, Min7, Min7b5, Dim7).

  • Way to go very informative. Keep up the great posting and once again, THANK YOU!

  • Very cool looking guitar. What is it? Very informative with the theory of the lick, not just frets and fingers...

  • If you are going to give lessons first learn to tune your guitar your E string is flat

  • you ain't looking bout playing a swingin like man

    pleease keep the soul alive

  • Hello Mr. Robert Blues Master guitar teacher. I am so happy right now because I just watched your video just now and completed my first blues lick ever. • excellent, not much more to say. As always.

  • thanks so much :) dolphinStreet rules... :)

  • THanks for the lesson, Robert. To all those wondering, this is a Michael Kelly Patriot guitar.

  • is that a shecter?

  • Cool Lick, it would be better to use a little distorsion :-)

  • Distortion? maybe you mean a blues peddal with a crunchy sound. Ofcourse you could try it with the Maxon D-9, or the TS-808 tube screamer :D

  • if it sounds good then who cares

  • nope

  • great !!!!!!!!

  • What guitar is that?

  • Les Paul Custom???? I'm not sure

  • Sweet. Thanks for the bluesy tidbit.

  • cool

  • what guitar does he playing ?

  • will y'all just shut it?

fast and slow...major or minor...sharp or flat, its all a mater of PREFERENCE and TASTE of which we all have our own.

no two people like exactly the same things. i dnt find fast playing impressive at all, it just shows some people have too much time on their hands to practise it 8 hours a day. although i do still like thrash metal.

  • you dont need 8 hours =/ plus most people that play fast have already been playing for a good ammount of time =/

so 1-2 hours a day for 6 years should do the trick

  • @Maten123 i disagree for 1-2 hours a day

the more hours you practice a day the better

    because technique will be better

  • YES GREAT TEACHER

  • Nice lick, you are a great teacher.

  • good job! nice tone!

  • goddamn. why the hell discusing about styles and saying bad things about each other?

im listening to thrash, heavy, brutal death and other many metal styles, but im learning this damn riff because i like it. it sounds gorgeous!!! awesome!

and i dont care, what style it is. im just listen and play LIVE music, whatever style it is. its all the matter of taste.

    excuse me for bad english:)

  • @apuokiena lying bastard. ur learning it because metal is build upon blues. so if u dont learn blues u cant play metal u lying sonovab1tch. hehe. im here for learning blues cuz i wanna learn metal too :P

  • @apuokiena Dude same hre i fucking love death metal but this blues shit is pretty fucking sweet to learn and jam with friends and good to learn!

  • @apuokiena a lot of posers

  • @apuokiena agreed...very fun to play

  • @apuokiena right on bro

  • @apuokiena ...one might find more blues-stuff in metalriffs than expected :^) ...e.g.: i used to play metal only too ....but as i started to leran blues scales etc... i saw that some metal-solos were played in blues scales ...

  • lol

  • Thanx for the lesson, these are nice things to play!!

please post more of these licks!!

    "Salukes" from belgium.

    ;-)

  • thanks a lot

  • gorgeous guitar, awesome lick

i'll be practicin hard to memorize this one, and build off it

  • Grazie Rotren... beautiful guitar and beautiful lesson... your's style is fantastic... Ciao from Italy...

  • thats a beautiful guitar

  • Blues!

  • You have to LOOK the piece? That's what's wrong with the perception of people today. Apparently you can't play if you don't look right doing it. How Britney Spears sounding that is. Personally I LISTEN to real music, I don't need a monitor screen to tell me if someone is good. Keep rockin' rotren, its the soul and the fingers that make the sound!!!! Just ask Bob Dylan. With his looks he probably wouldn't make it through the front door of a label today..Sad ,sad ,sad.

  • Today people with nothing on their brains think playing fast is all that matters, most people don't know how to hear and how to play, they just bother in playing fast to look good lol..

  • wrong..people play fast because it sounds good to them.and you are saying this because you are jelous you cant play fast..its all about style..

  • I can't play fast? everyone can, it's just a matter of theory and practicing.

I'm not jealous of fast playing people, but i sincerely am jealous of those people that know how to play fast AND good.

My style is more blues and rock, or metal, whatever I find agradable to my ears.

  • dude. you have an official student here man.

  • You guys talk like metal was so different than blues.

Some metal types are clearly influenced by blues, as rock is too.

Off course you won't see BB King playing metal though lol.

  • hahahah. bb king with long hair and screaming. haha! -_-

  • Most metal is Drop D bullshit. over and over again. The blues is also repetitive, but it has emotion and it doesn't sound like running a chainsaw, as opposed to metal.

  • Jazz, blues, rock, heavy metal, trash metal, power metal. Then Yngwie came then: (melodic) death metal, metalcore, deathcore.. All related!

  • I like all these, except those songs where you can only hear the vocalist screaming.

  • yo rotren. i play metal stuff, but i took the time to learn your lick, sounded totally badass, and i learnt a triad :P. thanks for the lessen!

  • so are you using the 1st/5th (depending who you are) position of the minor pentatonic scale?

sweet sounding riff by the way man

  • thanks man. i've been looking for good blues licks and this one rocks.

  • ORGASM!!!!

  • Haha, thanks for clarifying that, I guess I should just sell my guitar gear and take up stamp collecting or something?

  • Hell no. Image is nothing on skill ^_^

  • @rotren Well, I suppose he is right. I mean, music isn't about enjoying and expressing yourself or something idiotic like that, now is it? It's all about the looks.

  • well metal guitarists look like huge motherfucking dorks compared to this guy, and he's pretty amazing,

  • thats cos hes just got outa bed!

  • @tomkellymusic

Its about the music not what brand you wear or your haircut you emo loser.

  • @kuztoml65

suck my japseye you korean bastard

  • @tomkellymusic

Thanks for proving my point, you DEFINITELY are emo.

  • @tomkellymusic- The "look" only matters if you want to be a fucking pop band like Van Halen. If you just love guitar, want to teach guitar, or even want to be a professional guitarist that DOESN'T get judged by highschool kids on what they wear- It really doesn't matter. You do know some people play guitar without the intention of getting famous right?

  • @superlou1s Van Halen=Pop? then your head=dick?

  • @AndreTheGentle- Van Halen was one of the poppiest bands of all times. There's no arguing that. They still are technically rock, but they devolved into pure pop in their later years.

  • Thanks for the lick, man. Very easy to play and sounds very impressive/bluesy and awesome.

  • What strings do you use?

  • 09-42 on this guitar. Any brand will do.

  • You Are Very Nice ^^."...so0o0o good lesson man ^^."

  • haha ty for teachin me that lol

  • Is that a fender tele? It is cool lookin. sounds good too.
