Played this track on Black sea tour in 1980, saw it in Southampton, at the end of the track they flashed strobes in time to the sound of a helicoptor blade, gave me head spin and I nearly fell off the balcony! Bloody Brilliant tho.
Saw them in March 1980, Kitchener, Ontario and took a bunch of photos. If I could only find them now. A few years have gone by since then but yes, what a great live performance.
Hi guys, aqualash go2 was xtc's second album white music was the first, i reckon still around '77 though(it has a cover of 'all along the watchtower' on). Both had barry andrews on keyboards. Drums and wires was the first with dave gregory on 2nd guitar.I saw first line up once around 78/79 then around 6/7 times with gregory. Great gigs fantastic pop songs but also very clever music and lyrics, maybe too clever for the music press??
listen, talking heads were great. a really fantastic outfit, but i truly truly believe that XTC were the most underrated and truly way ahead of their time bands ever
english settlement, their album from 1982 is both a masterpiece and utterly timeless
Just a flaming ball of punk pop energy...My God! GODDAMN...I FRICKIN' LOVE ANDY! This is a whacked out, partridge vocal tour de force. Listen to those guitars, it's just nuts!
XTC...They're all mine...ALL MINE!!! Ya can't have 'em!
I don't want to rain on your parade batgurrl but the origins XTC start around 1974 and their first album GO 2 was released in 1977 so both bands were around the same time.
When XTC toured the US with Talking Heads,David Byrne would introduce them at every show out of respect.
I've seen both bands live and XTC are still a force to be reckoned with.
Both bands were talented and original but i believe XTC picked up the gauntlet that Lennon and McCartney threw down.
true that Go 2 was early, but I dont' think xtc was playing in the states that early. I will not make comparisions - both did fantastic live shows, but only got to see XTC once, Talking Heads many times. They toured together? where the fuck was I - lol - I don't think that was in the US. I will agree with you on the Beatles thing too. XTC is performing live these days? Andy got over his fears?
don't know WHAT u Talking Heads haters are talking about. They predate this by YEARS - formed in 74 and started performing in 75. I love both bands, but XTC comes after Talking Heads in a time line. Drums and Wires 79 therabouts Talking Heads 77 speaks for itself
me too... was seriously considering going from Hobart- Good Quadruple bill too.. Who would've thought that 27 years later you can see it on YouTube!!! Thanks for posting.
Andrea -- I was thinking of that very band before I read your comment. David Byrne has a tailored, concocted "zaniness" compared to this. Go for the original!

I must say Dave Gregory is a mighty fine guitar player.

One of the best and most energetic pop-punk-ska songs ever written, if not THEE best.

I really have to learn how to play this song for both guitar parts, the bass and the vocals.

@NRVERTAKEMEALIVE
.
Well I am supremely jealous. I could not see them in 1980 due to finances. My buddy met the band and got his copy of BS autographed.
.
At least I can watch on YT and remember all the great times listening to all of their music.

@NRVERTAKEMEALIVE didn't the music press love them?

@lennymullett That's a huge call. I love the Talking Heads sooooo much.

I think they together toured in the late 70's.
They haven't performed since doing an unplugged tour
for radio and MTV in the US for oranges and lemons.
The last CD was wasp star but Andy is churning out
music...I agree its no point in making comparisons
as its all subjective.
