Many of these bulls are taunted and teased in order to make them chase the ppl, but when compared to other bullfighting events,they're almost harmless or naive. Nobody stabbs the the animal, set their horns on fire, killed in the arenas (or outside of it), they're not doped to loose (or gain) aggressiveness, beaten, blinded with fat ,etc, etc, etc. These bulls are rented for these particular events and return to the fields in good health.:P

I researched this, and per my best understanding, in recortes (bull leaping -- really amazing), the above "toradas de corda" in the Azores and the "bous a la mar" (bull in the sea -- Denia, Spain), the bulls are not harmed, unlike the Spanish or Portuguese traditional bullfights. Consider, too: most U.S beef cattle: after weaning, cruelly confined to prevent exercise, fattened ASAP, then to slaughterhouses which are BRUTALLY inhumane (visit one sometime). Who are we to cast stones?

The problem in Portugal is not so much about financial interests like in Spain. It's more about the weight of a modern mentality concerning animal welfare vs the cultural weight of what is carried out for centuries by the ppl. When ppl do something for such a long time, it's hard to convince that they're wrong.
