It is haraam to fast on the days of Eid because of the hadeeth of Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade fasting on the day of Fitr and the day of Sacrifice (Adhaa).

(Reported by Muslim, 827)

Note also that the caravan that informed them of the sighting came at the end of the day, so they prayed the day after.

However, we have media these days and we can all communicate (as we are now) to know when the moon has been sighted. It is not about the community but about the sighting. Fasting is prohibited on the day of Eid. If you want to celebrate it with your community InshaAllah, do so, but you cannot fast when the moon has been sighted.

when is Eid? Most of comments say friday. In London they say it is Friday too but in Paris, Sydney, in the US they say it is saturday.... Can anyone help??? Pleeeeeeze.

InshaAllah it is Friday. Our community here in the US and many others, some of the largest population of Muslims in the US, are going with the official date - Friday, October 12. It is forbidden to fast on Eid Al-Fitr when the moon has reportedly been sighted in many countries. ;-)

Your reply leaves me even more puzzled. I have read that in the US it will be celebrated on sat. but now you tell me you are in the US as well... I live in London (UK) but I am actually from France, and all my family will be celebrating it on sat, insha Allah. In OZ as well it will be celebrated on 13, and I am soooo confused and scared and worried, because like you said, it is strictly forbidden to fast on Eid. Is your local mosque having the Eid prayer tmrw?

Where you live does not decide when you start Eid. When the moon is sighted, thats when Eid starts.

It has been sighted by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, Bosnia, and some other countries. :-))

Sorry to be a pain, but where have you read that the moon has been sighted in the countries you mention below? Because I have read the opposite. (And, betwee you and me, the reason I am scared is because of the sate of our Umma. How do we manage to disagree every year on that point? If we are unable to decide when a month starts and ends, then how can we establish the rest of the calendar? why do we disagree only about this month, the most blessed of all? Abu 'Umayr ibn Anas reported from his paternal uncles among the Ansaar who said: "It was cloudy and we could not see the new moon of Shawwaal, so we started the day fasting, then a caravan came at the end of the day and told the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that they had seen the new moon of Shawwaal the day before, so he told the people to stop fasting, and they went out to pray the Eid prayer the next day."

The moon was sighted in another place, and they were not allowed to continue fasting. It is prohibited if someone informs you that they have seen the crescent. Seeing as we have television and these countries have announced they have seen it, we should follow that.

Brother, I agree with you 100% but as you know, not everyone will agree, so I just stated in my opinion the best way to avoid unnecessary disputes everyone should follow the decision of their Imam and Masjid.

There will be no blame on any individual if he/she follows their Imams.
