As a standalone statement, it can be taken a variety of ways. If you understand most of Edwards' positions about Africa and how he'd handle trade agreements, then it doesn't appear as ominus. Ralph Nader talks about "trade up" versus "trade down" agreements. If Edwards takes a raising others up to our trade standards position, then Africa could benefit. I don't think he's talking about pillaging Africa.
i think the key here is IF edwards takes a "trade up" position, which i seriously doubt. how can one support trading up and at the same time be excited about getting "cheap land and cheap labor" from africa? it doesn't add up.
i still find his position covertly racist, whether he intends it to be or realizes that it is. racism isn't overt any more. it comes in seemingly benign and well-intentioned statements about trying to help others, yet in helping we create a system oppression.
