  • Hey, First off I would like to say your videos are very helpful and awesome. But i have a question. I heard Maaco doesnt do a good job painting cars, the paint job always ends up peeling and cracking. I was wondering what i would have to do prep it myself so all they have to do is paint. Do i have to sand the car to bare metal and primer it. Or just do as you said and just 400 grit it. And if i have to sand it to bare metal what do i need.

  • or you could just use mr blow dryer to remove the pinstriping you just warm it up and peel it off. way easier.

  • Hey, I have a 1970 Chevelle and am aiming to repaint sections of it, but the biggest problem that I am running into is rust. Do you have any recommendations for dealing with rust?

  • @walkdn2opensewer hey I would google about that question I'm not the best expert with rust but i do know its really tough to get it all out so it doesnt come back...

  • just use a heat gun and a plastic scraper for the pin stripe and any stickers if you dont want to wreck your paint. Then paint thinner and a rag gets the glue off, (just dont rub too hard or the paint will blemish and look like crap)

  • @Tobine22 Good tip- thanks for that

  • Hi I have a vintage car it's british racing green i want to paint the centre of the car from side of bonnet to back door Beige will i have to sand all the paint off or just take the shine off it.

  • @Farmer2492 That's a great question. I'd actually recommend going with vinyl if i understand correctly- You're doing a racing stripe down the middle? I'd go with vinyl. If you're going to paint though I'd mask it off and sand it carefully and then when you'e done you'll use 2000 grit sandpaper to even the ridge where green/beige meet then buff the heck out of it!

  • a belt sander! For christ sake your not finishing a deck!,,use a da or even a palm sander.

  • @jayd1563 Hey at least I didn't pull out the brush roller.....

  • never thought to save time and buy a sander?

  • @billyrk17 I bought a belt sander and ruined my fender. Gave up. Hands hurt now. Pain.

  • @pumthuggee Use a DA sander not a belt sander

  • @pumthuggee If I send you a pic of a car, could you tell me if it's possible to save it? xD

  • @DonaldHellsing Sure email me a few at a time- just check my website for my email addy

  • This is the bozo way to paint your car. The "ridiculous molding" plastic strip serves the very useful purpose of preventing dings and nicks when you park in a public parking lot. Most people don't notice or give a damn when they open their door slamming it into your brand new paint job. It's not very bright to not realize this and since you couldn't fathom the purpose of the molding then how can you be trusted to know what your doing when you paint the car?

  • but i wanted in DARK BLUE. so i should use black primer then blue paint?

  • @064644164 Probably black yes. If you have a chance you can try two areas- do one with white primer, the other with black and see if there's a big difference-

  • @pumthuggee I was always known that you use a light primer usually for dark colors. under my paint is white n my car is black under red is white etc.

  • i got a honda CRX 89, its metallic black i think or satin black. i want to paint into dark blue, do i sand it down to BARE metal then put clear coat then paint it? let me know asap thanks :)

  • @064644164 You don't need to take it to bare metal. Follow the sanding steps and then you could use a light grey or white primer to get a lighter starting place since you want to make it dark but a little lighter than black. If you still want it really dark then use black primer then your black.

  • what did you wipe it with after sanding?

    thanks

  • @juanjo12el Just a paper towel with water. Actually, many paper towels. Also after sanding I used an air hose to blast out dust from all the nooks and crannies. Do that first then wipe it down

  • When do you know that you're done sanding?

  • @MechaBrittany Smooth surface, old junk is off, irregularities even. There's a couple times you'll be done- they're stages. First to rough up surface and get top coat off, second after you've filled holes and pock marks, third after you've touched up any areas after priming. So there's really 3 times when you could be done sanding for a particular point in the project

  • That stupid plastic thing that ford motor company thinks "looks cool" is actually used to prevent your doors from becoming dented when parking in a shopping center parking lot

  • Dam this guy must work at earl scheib lol

  • Goes back to the saying do it right or don't do it at all. But if your car is already a junker might as well have some fun if your bored.

  • Your gonna dent your car if you take off moldings with a screwdriver. Use floss.

  • HELLA GAY

  • @sissillian1 Cool

  • I love the crickets

  • haha u crack me up bro

  • My shop instructor told me almost exactly how you did yours.. the only difference is when i took the "sticky tape" left overs off i used a power tool with an eraser like tip and it worked like a charm.

  • Man you are funny as hell.'sticky tape from 1995'lol

  • need help on prepping my car for a $50 rustoleum paint job. see video response

    thanks!

  • is this shilabuf

  • This should be titled, "How not to paint your car"

  • @ecoli2345 could you show me links to prep and repaint a car. Well i just need my hood repainted.

  • @ecoli2345 its showing how to sand down your car dip shit watch the second one for the paint

  • Would you need to sand and prime a car that is going to be painted the same color? For example I have a black civic, and I wanted to repaint it black gloss, would I still have to sand it down?

  • @trinidadnic yes. just sand it down a little bit then spray right over it. but if you want it to look really good i would recommend to buff the whole front bumper and hood down to bare material, those are the places that get alot of abuse

  • @trinidadnic You would need to sand it but not to bare metal. With 400 grit just get it roughed up a little. Also this is a good chance to take care of any dings or dents

  • what year and what car?

  • @nig227 96 Cougar. And it's for sale $1999 OBO-

  • bro couln't you use an electric sander?

  • God that sound is horrible.

  • Once you said spray paint, I was like AWWWW CRAAAPPP!!!

  • Done the razer thing what a mess and it took forever and took paint right off the car never again. Manual sanding is gay, orbital are the way to go. Spray paint on the car is never a great thing expect when you don't have the money to buy real paint.

  • They make a tool specifically for removing vinyl, glue and other things stuck to your car...Its a rubber wheel that goes in a cordless drill and rubs it out.I'd never let this dude near my car with a razor blade

  • @MrBonesy84 hahah nice! I definitely recommend everyone getting that and not using my razor method

  • @MrBonesy84 Well if you're going to sand and paint your car scratching it with a razor blade wouldn't matter lol

  • @MrBonesy84 yeah i work at an autobody shop we have that we also use dx330 grece and wax remover

  • you should use a heat gun to remove vinyl decals and glue ;)

  • @IvelandNO Right! Good call. I've used a hairdryer which was better than nothing but yes, heat gun definitely good

  • when you took that straight razor to the sticky tape the noise it made sent a shiver down my spine lol I hate it when that happens

  • @CorderoIvan HAhahah I know I hate that sound too

  • nice garage band loop : ) great videos you got by the way keep it up please!! it also helps if you use windex with the razor bade :) smooths it out and gets rid of those scratching sounds

  • nice garage band loop : ) great videos you got by the way keep it up please!!

  • @hubaluba u got it- thanks

  • Galvanized steel razor scraper would work well with that razor. look it up on google or ebay.

  • you remind me of shila bouff or w/e :)

  • Just a little bit of sticky tape from 1995! lol

  • the funny part was when you threw the mold. ahah nice

  • Thank you.your video was the best so far

  • @froddoyo Thanks, glad it was helpful

  • What would I use to remove surface rust? Can I use a circular sander? And how do I remove the logo on the side of the car? (In my case its a Mercury Cougar logo)

  • @ferrari5o9o dont listen to this guy look up better videos he knows nothing. it depends how deep the rust is you can sand it with 80 grit sand paper or cut it out try poking the rust area with a screw driver a couple times if it breaks you have to cut it out but if its surface rust just sand it until the metal until all the rust is gone and for the logo there should be some clips or screws holding it on on the opposite (or inside) side of the panel

  • @ferrari5o9o For rust sand it all off down to bare metal then use a rust stopper gel or spray then prime over that. Circular sander might work - depends how big of an area. I like doing it manually if it's small enough. For logos it depends on the year. On a hot day get some dental floss and work behind the logo separating the adhesive from the car. There might be holes though so be ready you might have to fill them. Newer cars just have the logos stuck on though with adhesive foam tape

  • @pumthuggee Ok, its a 1994 Mercury Cougar, so it might have screws, Is right on the side by the back seat window, so I'll try taking off the interior panel first, I'm painting the whole car, and the rust on the top is just surface, it looks like the idiot who owned the car before me started sanding it down to re-paint it but then just left it

  • @ferrari5o9o Hey sorry for the late reply. For those side emblems I think there are holes. I painted mine so long ago I honestly can't remember. You could take off the interior panel and look in from the inside and see if you can tell. If you're going to repaint then just yank them off otherwise yes, investigate that! For rust repair I do recommend looking at some other videos- my stuff is more artistic and you really want to do the right bodywork before you start painting

  • @pumthuggee k im working on my 1994 Chevy Cargo Van and the exterior is a white with rust from the bottom of the vehicles doors to on the sides of the body to get rid of it would i have to completely sand down the whole exterior ( im painting it black after) im 15 so i dont have alot of experience so im just learning as it is

  • @FootBall4236 Hey- you would need to get the rusty parts down to bare metal and then spray with a rust-stop spray or gel. Once you get half an inch out from the rust spot and it's looking good then you can stop sanding. For paint with no rust you don't have to sand to bare metal- Just rough it up with 400 grit. Also- make sure you prime! Plan on a couple coats since you're de-rusting. Practice on 1 area first- you'll get the hang of it

  • 0:40 You just lost that tool you will need later. :P

  • to risky lol

  • get a sticker remover spray.

  • fuck are you dumb, that is body molding to protect the door from being dinged

  • @racersedge17 Ya but it gets in the way of putting decals on, I had the one on my 2004 Monte Carlo SS removed for that reason.

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot No need to wet sand the primer. Don't need water till the end after your clear coat has cured for getting it super shiny. For sanding on the paint and primer no water needed

  • @pumthuggee ok thanks I'll try that, I wiped it once the other day and it just smeared everything, I noticed u just used spraypaint after its done can u tell that's what u used?

  • @zmetalmanbass If you do the process right, practice, clear and wet sand then it will look amazing. But you've got to try it out and practice first- there's a lot of technique you'll need to garner.

  • hey what should you use for a cleaner after sanding? iv been told windex, any glass cleaver, varsol, and painthinner... im painting my truck and cant figure out what to use to clean att he stuff off with, i tried water and it almost made it worse lol

  • @zmetalmanbass Usually I just use a damp towel and water....If you have an air compressor hit it with the air gun to blast all the dust out then just wipe with a damp cloth. I wouldnt recommend doing any hardcore cleaners or chemicals.

  • @pumthuggee YOU ARE THE WORLDS BIGGEST DUMASS AS SOON AS YOU USED YOUR HAND TO SAND YOU FUCKED UP THE BODY IF YOU WERE TO GO DOWN DEEPER YOU WOULD GET UNEVEN SURFACES AND DUMASS ITS CALLED 1000 GRIT SAND PAPER AND A BLOCK SANDER WHAT A GIANT FUCKING WASTE OF SPOT PUTTY THIS TAKES DAYS TO DO NOT 1 HOUR PLEASE PEOPLE DONT LISTEN TO HIM HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE HELL HES TALKING ABOUT

  • Thanks for having this for idi0t's like me ! I'm tired of high ass quotes =-/

  • @cartoonist1975 hahah no problem

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot Cool. Yes it goes sanding then rust-stopper then spot putty then primer then paint then clear then wet-sand. That rust stopper spray is good stuff make sure you do that- it's a clear gel or spray that kills any tiny rust remnants. Sand out all you can but use the rust stopper fa sho.

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot ok man just practice on a small area first hahah - it's gonna get messy baby! Also I'm going to recommend against going down to bare metal, you really don't need to. For grit make sure you end with 400 before priming. You'll need to get some spot putty filler and glaze for some of the dings and scrapes you're going to find too. STart easy, start small and then see how it goes- good luck

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot you can sand with anything but just make sure you're using the right grade of sandpaper and also keep the RPM's low- too fast of a spinning end and it will burn through paint. I used a belt sander once and it was a horrible mistake. If you're not doing an entire car then just use your hands, if you're doing a whole car then be careful, use right grit and you might need to go manual for edges, curves and bends

  • I hope you don't paint cars for a living,,,,,,,,,,,,,lmao

  • @Harleyman440 hahah no way- although goofing around like this did get me the knowledge I needed for some decent "real" work hahahah

  • i think the rubber thing is for when stupid people in other cars open there car doors and hit yours but they actuly hit the rubber mold lol

  • if you would have heated up the molding with a blow dryer first there would be alot less adhesive residue left.

  • @thedeerman091 Good call- found that out the hard way ahahha-

  • ever heard of a HEAT GUN!

  • thats a 250$ fine for littering! lol however nice video

  • thats a 250$ fine for littering! lol nice video

  • wat 'n sjap jung! hahaa

  • talk about a half-assed way to paint a car

  • what kind of car is dat?????

  • @JohnPinkney123 1996 Mercury Cougar... I'm selling it actually let me know if you're interested!

  • hey i like the ridiculous moulding along the side,,,,, :D

nonetheless good ta see theres still peeps reppin them ol cougars and tbirds! eventually i'll git around ta paintin mine,,,

  • it won't hurt the body, right.

  • @bntocool not the metal no

  • Hey, i have a 59 F100 that im getting ready to paint and im a little short in funds but im kindof woried about spray painting it. Does it have a pretty good finish when your done?

  • @cullet05 Well, definitely practice first. If you're doing the whole car 1 color (not crazy murals like mine) then be prepared to spend a LOT of money on cans of paint. It would probably be more cost effective to buy a sprayer and do it that way. Or maybe about even. It's possible with spray but for an entire truck to look good and not home-made like my crazy car- it's going to be a lot of work. the finish needs clear when you're done with the color- that's another big investment in paint!

  • @cullet05 that depends on how good YOU are with airbrush or spraypaint... duuhhh

  • Oh god...razor blade >_> I have a fear of them after nearly taking my finger off with one.

I WAS BEING STUPID OKAY :C stupid cardboard package....

  • Lol very funny video. I laughed when he talked about cutting off finger. Great I'm getting ready to paint my car thanks helped allot.

  • @demetrikbrown cool- good luck

  • @stevon1979

anythign you scrape off with the razer would just gunk up the sand paper and cause soft spots in it..youll end up going through alot more paper..plus that tape is pretty thick so the easiest way woudl honestly be to razor it

  • @stevon1979

anythign you scrape off with the razer would just gunk up the sand paper and cause soft spots in it..youll end up going through alot more paper..

  • Omgosh thank you so much. This is the first video I found where someone explains what to do. Not a video that has shit music in high speed.

  • wtf .. ur bando is alredy mixed ... in a tube ... where can i get that ..

  • @miguelzepeda20 It's actually called spot filler or spot filler putty. Should come in a red tube

  • @miguelzepeda20 got to your auto parts store and ask for glazing putty

  • @lucasmorter thanks

  • @miguelzepeda20 anytime. it is usually made by bondo and is in a giany toothpaste type tube and should be with all of the painting stuff. remember that that stuff is not just premixed bondo it is a different consistancy its more for smoothing out rough spots in old paint before a paint job and does not dry as fast as regular bondo either. but if you are just looking to skim coat over some rough metqal or rough old paint its the shit.

  • anybody know where can find a step by step for painting a car from bare metal? I will be soda blasting all the paint off my car so the sheet metal is going to be bare. the paint is going to be very basic Matte White so no special undercoats will be needed for candy or metallic colors.

  • @AcomsRazor1776 Not sure sorry- For bare metal there might be another coating or step involved I'm really not sure. Good luck though

  • Thanks. I just finished a video on how to paint my 1999

  • omg

finally i found a full informative video on how to prepare and paint the car

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks !!!!

  • @corvette4554 Welcome! Remember to practice on something first, you'll be glad you did

  • @pumthuggee oh yes im thinking of practicing first on a panel then if it worked ill do it to the car

by the way how many cans do i need to paint 2 bumbers like ( ) primer - ( ) base ( ) clear ??

  • @corvette4554 Great- Well, depends on how many coats. I want to say like 2-3 cans of primer and base and 1 or 2 of clear per bumper. Buy somewhere where you can by extra and return what you don't need. Also best to stay within same paint brand if possible.

  • @pumthuggee

but the only problem is in my country (middle east -bahrain ) there is only cheap spray paints

so my only solution is to buy from the internet maybe plastikote or dubli color or if u know better brands i would be grateful to you

  • @corvette4554 Dupli color is great, they have a lot of special effect products which are really cool too.

  • @pumthuggee great thanks a lot man

    ill stick with dubli color

  • its sanding .... not sandpapering ..... wow and there is a thing called a pin stripe removing tool . work just a tad bit better then a razor blade . wow .... and it looks like u are using sand paper for wood .....

  • this is why we autobody workers have business ..... wow

  • heres a fucking idea dont do back yard hack jobs and just a heads up use a rubber wheel to remove the tape

  • @TheMastermechanic100 hahaha thank u man, i see this is nothing new to u.. i was just going to say the same thing about the wheel hahahahahaha

  • for the side mouldings and pin stripe a good thing to use with the razer blade is a heat gun it will melt the glue and leave hardly and residue

  • @turbocoupe83 Nice! great idea- everyone trade in your razor blades for heat please

  • Is this a joke ?

  • ever heard of a sander?

  • can u even wash it???? by the looks of it it was done half ass. i work in a paint and body shop and wht u are doing in the way of prep work, and the paint. looks like u could never wash that car, cuz all your hard work would run with the water...

  • @fatbeatos Yeah this is definitely the ghetto backyard way but it's held up 2+ years with just a little fading- washing is fine, just the paint pens faded a bit. Overall not bad.

  • @pumthuggee well man if u want and easer way of doing it, let me know and ill tell u

  • OMG i Love you!! how long can you leave your car sanded? days weeks? or is it something you do right before the painting?? the prev owner of my car look like they spray painted the car. it was a teal color and now its black. do i take all of the black off or just sand it down like you did yours??

  • @KianaTheWordsmith Hey haha thanks- You can leave your car sanded for a while the only thing is the risk of moisture permeating into the metal through pocks and dings. Try not to leave it exposed and definitely do NOT sand it down to bare metal. You don't have to take all the previous color off but rough it up enough to get the top surface off, even it out and prime to see if there are any gashes or pits. Good luck!

  • for the molding tape and the pin straps cant you just sand that off when you sand the rest of the car instead of the razer plus in the video you were sanding by hand does it have to be sanded that way or can you use a sand belt?

  • @foursouls1 good question- I like to get the pinstripe off first because sanding it takes forever and tends to be uneven with the other surfaces around it. For sanding you don't have to do it by hand but I used a belt sander and it was actually harder- more cumbersome and clumsy. I think for machine sanding you might want some type of sander but not a belt sander- maybe one of those "mouse" type ones- hope that helps

  • that thing on the side that looks ridiculous is so if someone opens their door next to you it will hit the plastic instead of the car. corvettes have them too i agree they are stupid

  • so u dont have to the paint off just need to have a smooth surface?

  • @25doolan Well you don't have to sand all the paint off, you just need to rough up that top surface to receive the new paint. Actually you don't want it super smooth before you paint, you want it the same feel as unsanded primer. That's why primer is so important. Do your sanding to rough up the old paint then make sure you prime a couple times. no need to sand the primer just go straight to your paint after it dries (and do a couple coats). good luck-

  • lol i hope this is a joke,#1 jam scew driver behind molding anf put a dent in the door,no just use a razer nife and cut it off,# use 400 sand paper to sand car and using you fingers wal sanding,no just us a red scuff pad to sand car,use the 400 to sand the primer that you needed to put over the deep 100 grit scatches you put in the door and if you want to no how to do this the right way just check my page.

  • this guy is a joker ..

  • u r a biginner dude . get bit right

    never sand with bare hands.

  • @rackley35 Hahah yes- please add some helping hints and advice here if you have some extra advice for people

  • @pumthuggee Actually you want to use a DA sander to get all the clear coating off, not the actual color paint. You can sand the primer with DA and finish by hand. After the first coat of color you wet sand by hand before applying the final clear coat.

  • @Gratch2222 Excellent, thanks.

  • @pumthuggee I have even seen people paint cars with paint brushes and rollers and wet sand it down to a smooth finish. It is time consuming but the end result is really nice.

  • @Gratch2222 Hah man that is hardcore. Time to get some interns

  • u r a biginner dude . get bit right

  • put on your e brake

  • There a razor handles out there but most panel shops dont sell em there old

  • I have a question: Some cars' molding underneath has like an indentation for the molding to fit there. You can just fill that with body putty right?? I'm 15 and looking for a junker that needs some body work, I'm trying to get all the help I can. Thanks!

  • @ufosorufhoax13 Hey thanks for the question, that sounds awesome. Unfortunately some cars have that lame indentation for molding- so dumb! It depends how deep the indentation is. I'd recommend going fiberglass if it's more than just a slight ridge. If it's just a few holes where stuff was bolted on then do putty but if it's deeper than a 1/8 inch i think you'll want to go fiberglass.... good luck!

  • Hey- what brand of paint do you suggest? Thanks!

  • @maghaggard Hey- I have used every possible brand and honestly I can't really tell a big difference. I do like the specific automotive paints like Duplicolor the best for some of the cooler colors with sparkles in them.

  • Hey- what brand of paint do you suggest? Thanks!

  • hey pumthuggee, is it alright if instead of sanding it down by hand i use an electric sander? please reply, thanks =)

  • @sicktitz hey- depends on the sander. There's one called the Mouse which is small and worked pretty well for me. I also tried a belt sander which completely ruined an area of the car. Make sure you have a high enough grit, don't grind it real hard and take your time and see what happens- good luck!

  • do you need to sand it all the way back to metal? and if not do you need to prime it after.

  • @tdaniel89 no need to sand to bare metal- just enough to get old junky paint top layer off and rough up the surface moderately. You will definitely need to prime before painting. Do a couple coats, this will really help your paint last long

  • ive primed my car but what grit do i use to sand it?

  • @mctapout187 You don't usually need to sand the primer unless there are areas with damage that you're using body filler on. After priming a few times you should notice if there are any surfaces that need actual body filler or reapir work but if everything looks good then just let it dry and move on to your paint. (For most primers I've used this is how it is...)

  • @pumthuggee so if everything looks good, i could just skip the wet sand and start painting??

  • @mctapout187 yup, you got it.
