Patricia Collinge is one of the WORST actresses I have ever seen. She extremely overacts and it is completely unnatural. I know they used to intentionally do this to some point, for unknown reasons, but she overdoes it so much more than anyone else. And she acts EXACTLY the same in every performance that I have seen. She is extremely annoying, she complete ruins everything that she has been part of.
Thank you for putting up a tribute to Ms. Collinge. Many people rave about Little Foxes' Regina, some reviews even skip Ms. Collinge's name and minimize the importance of Birdie's character. While Bette Davis and all the others did a wonderful job in the movie, I consider Birdie a pivotal character in the play, and she certainly deserves more attention.
This is one of the greatest scenes ever in the history of movies. It summarizes but then far transcends Hellman's put-down of the South in Little Foxes. It is unforgettable, thanks largely to Patricia Collinge's increditble creation of Aunt Birdie.
What an amazing performance by Ms. Collinge! It reminds me, but still surpasses her beautiful portrayal of the duped sister of Joseph Cotton in "Shadow of A Doubt." Thank you so much for posting; wish you hadn't disabled the ratings! Earns 5 plus with me!

I never knew she wrote for the NYT, but I'm not surprised! Given all her talents, and incredible gifts, I'm thinking she could have written for any of the more elegant publications of the day. Guess I shouldn't be surprised. Thanks for your generous response! In her surprisingly quiet way, she was really like a beneficent force of nature.
@varadero1839 She actually wrote also for the New Yorker, so she definitely did write for an elegant publication! I'd loved Ms. Collinge in "Shadow of a Doubt," but just viewed her on Hitchock's television episode "The Cheney Vase," created 15 years later, and she was absolutely mesmerizing. And now this clip from The Little Foxes, in her earliest days -- what a wonder. As you say, a "Beneficient force of nature."
