  • Can I ask where the comments on this video come from? I feel they not quite fair to Harrwitz.

  • @chris69666 Hi Chris- the comments on Harrwitz come from "The Pride and Sorrow", Dominic Lawson's biography of Morphy.

  • Look at Harrwitz' estimated ELO rating. That man would have wiped Bobby Fischer off the board (as would most of todays chess masters by the way). The reason why that's incredible, is because he lived 100 years before Bobby Fischer, but I'm convinced Harrwitz would beat Fischer if they could have played 6 games, or 3 for that matter. Kasparov however, would beat any of them, Morphy included, because Kasparov would never fall for Morphy's neverending sacrifices and he would counter attack!

  • @SuperSmilingSmiley You cannot really compare players throughout such ages. Bobby Fisher was a nightmare for any grandmaster in his time, wiping everyone of the board. You cannot really say that he was no genius because of the estimated ELO or FIDE ratings.

  • @iodon i agree,

  • What is the name of the song at the beginning?

  • @pagpmike I'm so retarded- I'm pretty sure it's Michael Nyman, but I can't find it on my hard drive now.

  • @jessicafischerqueen Yep, it's Michael Nyman - a track from The Draughtsman's Contract called "Chasing Pawns is Best Left to Endgames". ;-)

  • oh god damn ... the Morphy could actually come to Wroclaw (Breslau) my home city ?!? but he got ill ? ...

    god damnit !

  • thanks for making these

  • Thanks to Bill Wall and Batgirl (Sarah Beth) for their excellent Morphy biographies- the links to their web biographies are supplied in the "more info" box to your right.

Thanks also to KalkiAwaits and Vonzi0000 for their wonderful chess videos, and for helping me with this chess history series. The links to their chess channels is to the right.

  • @jessicafischerqueen as far as I know, batgirl knows paul morphy than paul morphy knew himself

  • I'm very curious why nobody has mentioned the idea that Morphy might have been gay? He loved to be around the pretty French girls like it shows here, but he never married or had a girlfriend? Does anyone have information about this?

  • ls that the best you can come up with on this gtreat vid? He was as straight and swift with the girls as he was with his chess skills!

  • @zialasker Hey, now there's a idea. It ranks up with there with theory I heard about Giacomo Casanova being gay since, well he never married either, right?

Ok, sarcasm aside, I don't think there was any record or indication of this. Him being unbalanced later in life more or less account for his lack of social interaction. And while tabloid sensation make for interesting fiction, a story with chess themes isn't exactly going to capture the imagination of "most" people so what's the point?

  • BRAVO!!!! I Like iT reaLLy ***** suCCes amsterdaMcuLture THANKs
