I don't know this video is brutally honest, I like that, but it's also a bit pessimistic. I've heard many sides to this argument about moving to LA, not sure which to believe, I know for one you can expect to be broke most likely, which I am willing to put up with, but people make it seem as though is literally impossible beyond a shadow of a doubt to get by there.
But then again I have never been there, plan on moving soon, but never actually been, so who am I to talk.
when i went to the US the locals keep complaining how everything is so damn expensive, I live in Australia and right now petrol costs 5.49$ per gallon, 2.50$ for 1 quart of milk and about 2.20$ for a loaf of bread.
OMG! I think the same thing when I'm in traffic! Yea and if you want to move here, be prepared to fight to the death for a job, and if you don't have experience, be ready to make $8.00 to $10.00 an hour. thats like $15,000 to $30,000 a year.
LA just sprawls and sprawls and if I'm going to show off California i'd take them to a real inspired place like the Bay Area. I'm biased cause I'm raised here, but there are many sights round the bay that can leaving you staring in awe, undoubtably the Creator's work, heck take some herb with you...if it were up to the bay area alone, it'd be legal, unfortunately is's SoCall that's a little behind the curve
hey guys, you think LA is expensive? I live in switzerland zurich. I pay alone for my appartment 2000 € each month. When I visit Los Angeles in the holidays, its like Iam rich :D
I love visiting California. I am planning on moving there in the near future. Where did you record this at? I am looking for some places to take some scenic pictures. Thanks for posting this video. It gave me some kind of idea of how much to save before I move there.
@jamiedaniels666 Well dont know if it helps but ill give my opinion to ya I live about 56 miles from LA and head their very often its a great place if you stay in the right areas but the right areas arn't cheap thats the big problem . The best advice i could give you if your planning on moving to california is to move to the inland empier and get a job in la and work your way their .
@ChymereATL The part about multiple streams of income is true. But don't fool yourself into thinking its easy.
Also, your comments about my friend are off. And completely rude. Unless you can actually walk a mile in anyone else's shoes, you have no business passing judgment.
@TaylorMarie94 I don't know from personal experience, but I'd guess that to be one of the best ways to "try on" this city. You'd likely be living in a dorm or close to school and be involved with campus life. Plus which, both of those colleges are fantastic to have on a resume. If you can make either of those happen, you're smart to go for it!
@TheTopBloke yeah I heard about what is going on the only reason I am considering going to LA because most of my family is there and my mom is going back since her job allows her to live anywhere she wants ( work-at-home)
@jamiedaniels666 It depends on what kind of lifestyle you want or need. If weather is an issue, this can be a decent place to live (or downright fantastic if you're the outdoorsy type). But it's also expensive - not a reason to chuck the idea completely, but definitely something to consider.
There are also other areas in this country where it doesn't get cold in winter. Florida's pretty decent.
I have a job offer, I will make WELL over 60k and still scared as hell to move there. My 1500 sq ft house on a 10k sq ft lot is well over a million there..Im in the northwest. I paid not even 2/10th of that (in 98). I do like the idea of the sun being out..
@bones9965 Uprooting yourself, even when the salary offer is a good one, is a big deal. So I don't blame you. Sounds like you should be okay. Whether or not you actually like it here, that's something you won't know until you give it a shot.
And, yep, not having to deal with harsh winter temperatures is addictive.
LA IS FUCKED. Its getting worse. Its falling apart in sooo many ways. Dont come here. You will NOT find work in the "industry". You will NOT be "famous". You WILL end up trapped here. Ive seen it many times. I love my hometown and it breaks my heart to see it dying.
lol ya'll definitely didn't tell me anything new but i hav my mind set to drive there from Washington in January 2012 so i can get into music and film. i hav hope, i stay positive, i work hard for what i want and i refuse to quit until i get something good. i'm only 22 so i still got time :)
I like the phrase - "LA is seductive, but there is a high price to pay." Thanks for the harsh, but true advice. I wouldn't move unless I had a car and a 50K annual salary job. I have friends in LA who are struggling.
@jan8919 It's a case of urban sprawl; the area just kept growing and they didn't lay it all out so that we could have the kinds of transportation options that San Francisco or NYC have.
my mom wants to move to los angeles ...she is a sales person she sell make up she usually makes 100 or more per person ..basicly you are your own boss all you do is buy more products for the company of mary kay ...basicly how hard you work or how much time you spend for looking for people to sell the make up she can make easily 30 thousand a year at least or 25 thousand is that enough to survive ? because i guess a 1500-800 apartment would just add up to like 14 thousand a year
@OhCurt then insurance ? maybe like some extra cash wasted there idk how much insurance is there but over here she has a hundai she pays like 200 for insurance or a bit more I'm not sure ..but i heard insurance is higher there so i guess it will be about 2 to 3 thousand a year and foods will also be some money there too lol so i think 30 to 35 thousand is enough right ?
@Luvie1980 How are your skills as a waiter/waitress? Can you wear a green apron and work at Starbucks? What about oral sex? Would you allow yourself to be filmed giving it? What about blowing an AD for a part? Does that sound good to you? Does your skillset allow you to have any sort of job OUTSIDE the film industry? Do you have a car in top shape? If you lose your wheels you are essentially DEAD in LA.
@VoodooPolitico Your comments sound very condescending. Are you speaking from experience or just being a smart ass. If you hate LA so much why don't you move!
@Luvie1980 Unfortunately, there's a huge helping of truth to what he's saying. Sorry, but the reality is that Southern California has spiked considerably in the cost of living department. And with the way the city/county of Los Angeles itself is laid out, you truly are screwed without a working set of wheels. It's not impossible to make it work out here, but it's crucial to know exactly what you're getting into before you take the dive.
And not everyone who lives here and hates it can just leave
@Luvie1980 Im being realistic. Dont come to LA. You will regret it. I dont hate LA, its my hometown and I LOVE it. LA has reached a breaking point with 3rd world illegal aliens invading it and people from podunk with stars in their eyes thinking that they will be famous as an actor or in music. It just doesnt happen the way people think it does. There are too many people here and its destroyed the quality of life we used to have. I work in the industry and its not pretty for wannabe actors.
I am only eleven but when i grow after i get my meds degree in college i plan on moving to la from and go for my dream as a singer and from the money i saved up i will pay for a small apart. And pay for studios.
@OhCurt Even Hollywood is tough for minority actors and actresses, not alot of minority movies going on.While living in South Central for those years, not alot of blacks are going to college or working, most stay with there parents forever.I agree with your friend 60 grand is the cut off if you want to live comfortably. But if you can avoid all those things LA has alot to offer.Even on 60 grand salary,u cant raise a family or buy a house tho,but rent would be the best bet for 60 grand
Planning on moving to LA or San Fran area with a BA in computer science, if I can't make at least $60G that would be pretty pathetic in such a large city. All I know is the midwest sucks and LA rocks! Been there, spent time there, fabulous; I honestly can't wait to move away from this festering spot!
@OhCurt hey curt my view on LA having lived hear for 7 years now from Atlanta is LA is a beautiful city with all kinds of opportunities, theres never a dull moment, tons of stuff to do,breathtaking views, great beaches, great weather. But LA is only for certain types of ppl,by that I mean i don't think its for minorities without a Bachelors or Mastors degree(it is tough for them to find work).9%African American in LA,and having lived in Compton and Inglewood, its a tough place for black people.
@alwayson09 LA is a great city,Theres never a dull moment. But its only for certain types of people, not to be racist, but if your a minority without a Bachelors or Masters(they struggle in LA to find a job).LA is not for people with families either unless u make 180 thousand combined household with 2 children. That would provide a comfortable life for your family with good schools in a safe area.If your young, make 30 to 50 thousand, you can live pretty comfortable in 1bd apartment or renting room.
It IS really hard to live in the State of California, but I think it's worth it. I'm only a teenager but I used to live there and I realize how expensive it is! The traffic and smog doesn't help much either, but for some people that's what works for them. Some enjoy the stress of living in a city like L.A.
@banks3208 They've allegedly gotten worse in other areas like San Bernardino County, etc., but I'm no expert in this arena. Your best bet is to research that on your own.
From watching movies and playing video games about L.A., it kinda makes me want to live there but from what everyone says about how expensive everything is, i dont think thats a good idea.
dear OhCurt, I am going to graduate to become an electronic engineer next year is LA a good place for engineers to work in, or the engineering jobs in LA is too competitive?
@ramzi45 Just now seeing this for some reason (?). I don't know enough about that line of work to know where the best jobs are. Best to pick the brains of people who work in that field to see if any of them have given this part of the map a try. But... L.A. is competitive in a lot of ways, not just in the professional realm.
@Kkeenan461 Depends on what you want to do and what salary you're aiming for, but yes it's still a tough job market out here. Better since the last 'crash' but still not terrific.
@BabyGirlGoddess Probably about the same as being broke anywhere else, except there might be more fun things you can't afford to do.
But seriously... it's not completely mandatory that you have cash in order to have a good time out here. It just depends on how creative you're willing to be. It's the cost of basic living that's getting tougher, though.
@BabyGirlGoddess Bad. I've never lived there and even I can tell you that. LOL Rent there is EXPENSIVE, as well as houses. Food and other stuff is probably more expensive as well. You probably would only be able to afford an apartment in South Central or some other low-income, gang-ridden place if that is the case. Unless you want to have a nice apartment with at least 2 other roommates!
"Have a car and a jgood ob lined up" - Well no shit dude! I'm sorry but that advice applies to any city in the United States. You're going to need $60,000 and a car in ANY major metropolitan city that's worth living in in the United States. Not sure what you were expecting. If you don't have a good job your life is probably going to suck just as bad in Billings Montana as it will in Los Angeles.
@investmjr You'd be shocked (or maybe you wouldn't) how many people come to L.A. with nothing but a bizarre sense of entitlement to fame. That's something that probably doesn't happen as often in Billing, Montana.... just a guess.
@OhCurt Ha ha I'm a native Californian, so I wouldn't be too shocked. It always baffles me how people don't research how much an apartment will cost, the state taxes, registration, the local job market, etc. before they move. They just close their eyes and expect everything to work out once they get to wherever they're going, and then they complain that it sucks "there", wherever "there" happens to be. LOL, even Billings Montana.
@investmjr Ah yes, it's clear you understand the 'extra layers' that this side of the map comes with. LOL
It's not a bad place but the cost of living reality can be hella-sobering, even for those who do plan. When I moved back here after 12 years in the Midwest gas was still under a dollar per gallon and shitty apartments weren't a full grand per month. Some things you can't necessarily predict but you're right - taking a good hard look at the current state of affairs should be step one.
@investmjr In all fairness, in a lot of metro areas (particularly in the midwest and the south) you DON'T need to make 60,000 a year or more to live comfortably. Of course, the having a job thing in the first place is common sense.
@ThePumpin1 What cities would those be? Rent in the good part of any major metropolitan city (Minneapolis, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta, take your pick) is going to run you $800 - $1,000) if not more. Of course you can find lower prices in less desireable parts of town, but let's assume you'd like to live in a decent area. Bills, fixed expenses, gas, unplanned events take up another $1,000 at least. If you're making $60K You've got prob $1,300 left over for food entertainment. Just gettin by
@investmjr There are: Indianapolis, Phoenix, Nashville, Kansas City, Charlotte, Austin, Dallas, Houston. Shall I keep going???? There are exciting cities in the United States where you can live in a world-class environment and not have to pay sky-high prices to live there. Oh, AND you CAN live in a nice part of town. I lived in Phoenix, Arizona (going to relocate back soon) and found a nice place for less than 600 a month. Was in a nice neighborhood AND had a view of Camelback Mountain.
@investmjr Also, Phoenix is a big city (sixth-largest) and you don't have to sacrifice your first-born to survive. Maybe some people need to learn to live within their means. You don't have to have the biggest home, car or fanciest neighborhood to survive. Living somewhere that is clean, affordable, with good neighbors and services is good enough for me.
@parrojado The link is in the description box, but his user name on here is Audionautix. He has an entire library of creative commons music available to be used. If you go to his YT page, it should have a link to his site where you can find the music files.
@OhCurt First of all thanks! But in audionautix(dot)com there's over 200 songs. Do you know the name of this one so I don't have to listen to all of then...
@parrojado Unfortunately no. But you can sample them at a few seconds each. Shouldn't take long to find it that way plus you'll probably discover other tracks to use as well.
Is that the Mulholland Drive Overlook? I was on vacation in LA last year and I went to that overlook at night to take some nighttime pictures of downtown, but it was closed. Thankfully there was a very nice homeless guy living there and he showed me how to get in. I took some of the most beautiful pictures of a clear, lightup downtown LA that I've ever seen.
YEARS ago, (20's - 30's-ish) there was an LAPD "outpost" set up at major entry points into California. YES...LAPD...California/AZ border...they used to try to "weed out" the "undesirerables" that were headed towards LA and convince them to go elswhere..or just tell them to get the fuck out...THEY NEED THAT AGAIN, to warn people that they are wasting their time coming to LA. LA is done...its over...its circling the bowl.
@StilezC Other than some time in the military and roughly four years elsewhere, Ive lived in LA my whole life. Almost 50 years. The place sucks now. Its getting IMPOSSIBLE to live here. Its HOME for me and it breaks my heart but Im getting the hell out.
@staciemb2009 There's a link in the description of this video where you can go compare cost of living between various cities. Compare L.A. to where you are now, take a good hard look at what you're earning (or going to be earning when/if you get here), and then determine the answer to that yourself.
@staciemb2009 POSITIVES? Great views. Good taco's. NEGATIVES? The city is falling apart. Illegal aliens are invading, AGAIN, in huge numbers. Traffic is worse every year.
Go somewhere else. San Diego maybe?
"Harsh Mistress"? Maybe more of a MEAN NASTY BITCH that just keeps getting meaner.
L.A. is not soooo bad, really it isn't. It looks bad on paper but like any other city,it has its problems, the job market has its "you gotta know somebody, its my skin color" politics. Before any recession it was already an expensive place to live so don't be so shocked mid western folk who's gas is 2.50 gl. Like ny city it's an advanced fast paced melting pot where there is lots of competition. Don't move here just to do it.
You know, I hate to be one of those people, but I'm another one of those kids who dreams of getting in the Film Industry. After many years of thought, I need to decide to move to either NYC or LA. My dad tells me to go to LA because it is slightly safer and a bit more spread out. And my mother wants me to go to NYC because it's closer to home. I dont think Ill be happy with any other job thats not associated with film. Even if I'm someone who brings the director coffe, you know? What do u think?
@Resorcery LA being safer than NY certainly hasn't been my experience. I attended college in Brooklyn for four years w/o a single incident. I've lived in LA now for seven years. My first friend here was murdered for the hell of it (they didn't even take his money). Car chases and police helicopters over my house are a weekly occurrence. Lots of aggressive people - I could go on and on with this.... I'm not sorry I came, but I can't wait to move back to NY (if that makes sense). :-/
@WEBUILTTHISHOUSE Splitting the rent is always helpful. Not killing each other as you share space under the same roof is even more helpful.
Seriously, though, if you can commute in and out of the parts of L.A. where you'll need to be, and you can find housing that's less expensive, it's a smart way to go.
@WEBUILTTHISHOUSE West LA is expensive. The Valley is more reasonable but with gas prices so high now you have to think twice. LA is a rough town to make it. In NY it is expensive but you earn more money. Not so in LA. You will earn maybe 25% more than in Indianapolis but the cost of living is double. I lived there from 2000-2001 when it was booming. Those days are gone, the city is plagued by high unemployment and depressed economy. Sad when you think about what once was.
@jvarela965 Thanks. I really appreciate the advice. At this point in my life im deciding to just visit LA for vacation. I just got a good job here in cold ass ohio, so Im gonna stay. Trying to make it way out there would be almost impossible even with two other guys unless we all had good jobs lined up! So im just gonna stay here!
@WEBUILTTHISHOUSE It's really a shame. 30 yrs ago it was the promised land. no longer. The city resembles a large South American city with rich and prosperous white people and poor black and brown people. I tried it for a year then pressed the eject button during the 2001 recession. I still get emails from people I knew out there and they ask how things are in Florida because the economy is so bad. Stay where you are. Columbus is a nice town.
I'm being offered relocation for my job. But I will be living in the suburbs... Way out there. I did that here in Chicago. While the traffic is horrible I think it's worth it for a little bit of sanity. I moved to Chicago almost 3 years ago from Florida and hate the people and crappy upkeep of the state for the cost of living. Plus my only remaining family is in the area. Sorry but you may have another transplant. Thanks for the honesty!
@teburgess Chicago burbs life can be a doozy, especially if you came from some place like Florida. I did the Midwestern lifestyle for 12 years so I can somewhat relate to what you're describing. Shoveling snow definitely wasn't for me.
You're coming here with a job - that's a huge advantage, one that it doesn't sound like you're taking for granted. Good luck with the move and the upcoming adjustment!
I live in Chicago, It's a great and all, but when winter comes along it's a hell hole. We usually get 2-3 inches of snow which isn't that bad. I do enjoy the winter season though because it gives a break off of summer and I just like cold weather better. It would be nice to live in LA for a year. 37 million people live in California and everyone i talk to over the interwebs lol seems to be from there.
If that truly is the case, then you're either way too thin skinned (in which case, how you survive in L.A. is a total mystery and maybe YOU need to get the hell out), or you're in complete denial about the realities of this area.
I live in oakville close to Toronto ( about 30 min). I am portuguese and i hate this weather here. It s horible!!! I just wish i lived in Portugal with my hubby ( he s portuguese too)where my family my second home is. We were in LA and we loved it( specialy me):) I was always facinated by LA. I loved my visit!!! i do background acting now and i love it but i know here i have no chance of making it in that industry. If i was younger i would try LA
I don't live in L.A. But I live in orange county about 45 mins from L.A. Give or take a few mins depending on traffic. I lived here all my life and I'm so tired of this place it's just too stressful the weather is nice but I just don't like this place but then again I'm only 17 that's just my opinion.
Anyone thinking of moving to my city stay the fu&k where you came from. All you do is cause traffic jams, take all the apartments and over crowd what was once a great city. People come here trying to break into show business when none of you have a shred of talent. Stay in your piss ant little city's and keep out!! We don't want you here.
For what it's worth, you're not alone in this sentiment. The caveat is that there are a lot of cool people who have moved into the area who I'm glad to know. Hopefully this is true for you as well.
How u doin my man, i might be moving out there soon, how much for a decent 2 br apt would u say, are jobs hard 2 come by, and how bad would the air/smog be for a brother with asthma?
Los angeles is so diverse compared to any other city, its crazy but in a good way hah. I live in san diego and when i go out to LA every couple months everything just seems different, such as the lifestyle and all. LA is an amazing city, i just think you have to plan a lot before considering moving there.
I would love to live there but my boyfriend worked there on the railroad for about a month and he said he hated it there. He said too much bumper to bumper traffic too crowded too expensive. He also said guys out there said you have to watch where you go there and you have to work two jobs to survive and houses are very expensive even in bad areas.
@GeorgeVreelandHill I miss the East Coast for that same reason, EVERYTHING was in NY.... (Well, besides the warm weather....) People love to say LA is great b/c you can surf and ski in the same day. Do those people work? Between work, traffic, and parking, I get to do cool stuff a handful of times a year. In NY I could get on the subway and go anywhere and it was easy. I would have to take three buses to get to the LA subway (which is clean but inefficient).
@blackisrealites85 Impossible for me to give you a fitting answer in just a text comment. A lot of the homeless out here are veterans and mentally ill people who used to receive more government support but who were left hanging during Reagan's presidency. Also, a lot of homeless people migrate toward this coast because of the warmer climate.
@BigHeadsHooKah Still trying to pump coffee through my system to wake up, and unfortunately there are no plans for a follow up video right now. But off the top of my head, I can tell you that the closer you live to your job the better. And if you do have to take any of the freeways in your daily commute, I-405 is the one to avoid (it's basically a parking lot during rush hour).
@keepitcoolx LA and all of Southern California is a beautiful and diverse place, but the video is right that it is also crowded and expensive. And there are hundreds of colleges and universities to attend for study. But it's not easy to live here and to get around. You must own a car.
i'm moving to los angeles. i lived there until i was 5 but moved to other parts of the country. i thought about moving to nyc but i always viewed los angeles as my home town. i hope people don't treat me as a transplant. i am not an aspiring actor or anything annoying like that. i just love l.a. i'm 22 and feel like i'm wasting my youth in shitty smaller cities. so my question is, am i a transplant? i lived in l.a from 6 months old to 5 years old
@sexlessparents Mine's a similar story, actually. I was born here but spent 12 years of my life in Illinois. I've always referred to myself as a "Native Transplant" - it occasionally confuses people, which adds to the fun.
Damn, at least in LA you have a beautiful beach and Californian landscapes are great. But everywhere I search I read that living in LA is not easy. I wish I'll move there for a short time just to try it.
@OhCurt Well first off, I agree whole-heartedly with just about everything you've said in this video. Los Angeles is an expensive, dynamic, cold hearted bitch.
Which is why people stay.
I'm not too sure about what I'd like to see.
I lived in L.A for about 8 years of my life. So I know exactly what you're talk about.
Maybe you could do street interviews with people that you've touched basis with. Have them give their honest opinion (like this guy) about what they think this city is about.
@dodoheard 8 years is a long stretch - or can be, depending on the shape of those years.
This really is something I'd like to revisit at some point, so thank you for the suggestion. Until the various reactions began piling up here, I really had no idea this was any kind of hot button topic at all.
60 thousand a year huh. i'm already in my thirthies and i'm at a point where i'm considering working at a coffee shop while i try acting full time. L.A. has always been the ultimate place id want to live but uh.. when i can afford it. which by the looks of how my life is going --that will probably be never. but just for the weather..i rather be poor in california than poor in the cold winters of montreal.
I agree with you guys. LA is a hell of a town. I don't live there but I have been there 30plus times. Im a actor, I have had auditions out there, filmed a few things out there. I also have alot of friends that live there that are actors and work in other parts of film. I live in Phoenix and just drive back and fourth cause I get a audition every other month and its cheaper to live here and drive back and fourth. To me LA seems like this if you have money its fantasic. If you don't it sucks!
@smiley0407 It's cheaper for you to commute like that? Amazing (but I shouldn't be surprised).
Yeah, it most definitely can suck if you're not in a high income bracket. I think for myself, the closest thing to a right answer (perhaps THE right answer) is to just stick around in the Long Beach area. It's part of L.A. county but without a lot of the hassels and expenses.
Good luck with your career! (or "break a leg" if that's still preferred)
@cantfuckwithmeprods Hard to say with absolute certainty, but Long Beach is a little less expensive than Hollywood or Los Angeles - and it's still IN Los Angeles county. Gas prices are about 3.20-ish per gallon right now (if you have your own wheels), but I don't know how much bus passes, etc., currently run. That, along with info on motel rates, etc., is all online though and SHOULD be fairly easy to research.
The least expensive option would probably be to stay with friends if possible.
@smiley0407 Smart man. Phoenix is the place to be. Nice weather most of the year, reasonable cost of living, Palm Trees and it is a world-class city. I call it L.A. without the attitude and the ocean!!!
Im really thinking of moving to California from Finland so its a long way from here. Im still a college student tough so i have few years to think about it. But thanks for this video anyways, gives me new perspective to this whole thing and to living in LA in general.
@wezos Advice - that's dangerous stuff, but since you asked...
Follow your gut instinct. If you're in an unsafe situation and have the means and opportunity to improve/change that, why not go for it. As for the musician thing, hell yeah it's tough to make a career of that, but there are also several directions you can take that if you have the talent, skill, determination, and - most importantly - the connections.
Los Angeles is a wonderful place to visit but I lived there for a year from 2000-2001 and the high cost of low living wears on you after a while. The illegal alien sunami has made matters worse.
@Pent5HT It's not that California, or L.A is a shit hole. It's just that it's not for everyone. Just like how New York isn't for everyone. You have to be the right type of person for L.A.
My advice: Move to Los Angeles and try living here for 2 years. If nothing big has really happened for you during that time, then it's best to leave. I've been here for 6 years now and it's easy to get stuck here (drained finances, complacency, laziness, etc.)
@trisharose87 Sounds like you two will be just fine, yeah.
And there's no such thing as "right" or "wrong" in terms of reasons for moving to SoCal, just practical versus ill-advised... and it's all subjective, even with the harsh realities taken into consideration.
@OhCurt Okay Thank You so much! & this video is so helpful because I know A LOT of my friends want to make their to "Make It' and I will be passing this along to them. Thanks Again.
Hey Curt My boyfriend and I are planning to move to LA this October He will be making around 60,000+ a year and Since I'm still a student who also wants to work I'm thinking we will be fine. I want to move to LA because ever since I was young I just felt a connection with it. I am not moving for stardom nothing in that nature so In your opinion am I moving for the right reasons. Which are better weather, school, just a nice living basically. I have struggled all over the east coast & now Life

TaylorMarie94 2 months ago
@TaylorMarie94 I don't know from personal experience, but I'd guess that to be one of the best ways to "try on" this city. You'd likely be living in a dorm or close to school and be involved with campus life. Plus which, both of those colleges are fantastic to have on a resume. If you can make either of those happen, you're smart to go for it!

@TheTopBloke yeah I heard about what is going on the only reason I am considering going to LA because most of my family is there and my mom is going back since her job allows her to live anywhere she wants ( work-at-home)
TaylorMarie94 1 month ago

If you lose your wheels you are essentially DEAD in LA.

Luvie1980 3 months ago
@Luvie1980 Unfortunately, there's a huge helping of truth to what he's saying. Sorry, but the reality is that Southern California has spiked considerably in the cost of living department. And with the way the city/county of Los Angeles itself is laid out, you truly are screwed without a working set of wheels. It's not impossible to make it work out here, but it's crucial to know exactly what you're getting into before you take the dive.
And not everyone who lives here and hates it can just leave

@alwayson09 LA is a great city,Theres never a dull moment. But its only for certain types of people, not to be racist, but if your a minority without a Bachelors or Masters(they struggle in LA to find a job).LA is not for people with families either unless u make 180 thousand combined household with 2 children. That would provide a comfortable life for your family with good schools in a safe area.If your young, make 30 to 50 thousand, you can live pretty comfortable in 1bd apartment or renting room.

dear OhCurt, I am going to graduate to become an electronic engineer next year is LA a good place for engineers to work in, or the engineering jobs in LA is too competitive?
ramzi45 8 months ago
@ramzi45 Just now seeing this for some reason (?). I don't know enough about that line of work to know where the best jobs are. Best to pick the brains of people who work in that field to see if any of them have given this part of the map a try. But... L.A. is competitive in a lot of ways, not just in the professional realm.
OhCurt 7 months ago
Is that accurate? I'm from Ireland and want to move to LA. Is it hard to find work?
Kkeenan461 8 months ago
@Kkeenan461 Depends on what you want to do and what salary you're aiming for, but yes it's still a tough job market out here. Better since the last 'crash' but still not terrific.
OhCurt 8 months ago
well i'm use to being broke.
if you are broke in L.A., how bad is it?
BabyGirlGoddess 9 months ago
@BabyGirlGoddess Probably about the same as being broke anywhere else, except there might be more fun things you can't afford to do.
But seriously... it's not completely mandatory that you have cash in order to have a good time out here. It just depends on how creative you're willing to be. It's the cost of basic living that's getting tougher, though.
OhCurt 9 months ago
@BabyGirlGoddess Bad. I've never lived there and even I can tell you that. LOL Rent there is EXPENSIVE, as well as houses. Food and other stuff is probably more expensive as well. You probably would only be able to afford an apartment in South Central or some other low-income, gang-ridden place if that is the case. Unless you want to have a nice apartment with at least 2 other roommates!
tall32guy 6 months ago
"Have a car and a jgood ob lined up" - Well no shit dude! I'm sorry but that advice applies to any city in the United States. You're going to need $60,000 and a car in ANY major metropolitan city that's worth living in in the United States. Not sure what you were expecting. If you don't have a good job your life is probably going to suck just as bad in Billings Montana as it will in Los Angeles.
investmjr 10 months ago
@investmjr You'd be shocked (or maybe you wouldn't) how many people come to L.A. with nothing but a bizarre sense of entitlement to fame. That's something that probably doesn't happen as often in Billing, Montana.... just a guess.
o__O
OhCurt 10 months ago
@OhCurt Ha ha I'm a native Californian, so I wouldn't be too shocked. It always baffles me how people don't research how much an apartment will cost, the state taxes, registration, the local job market, etc. before they move. They just close their eyes and expect everything to work out once they get to wherever they're going, and then they complain that it sucks "there", wherever "there" happens to be. LOL, even Billings Montana.
investmjr 10 months ago
@investmjr Ah yes, it's clear you understand the 'extra layers' that this side of the map comes with. LOL
It's not a bad place but the cost of living reality can be hella-sobering, even for those who do plan. When I moved back here after 12 years in the Midwest gas was still under a dollar per gallon and shitty apartments weren't a full grand per month. Some things you can't necessarily predict but you're right - taking a good hard look at the current state of affairs should be step one.
OhCurt 10 months ago
@investmjr In all fairness, in a lot of metro areas (particularly in the midwest and the south) you DON'T need to make 60,000 a year or more to live comfortably. Of course, the having a job thing in the first place is common sense.
ThePumpin1 9 months ago
@ThePumpin1 What cities would those be? Rent in the good part of any major metropolitan city (Minneapolis, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta, take your pick) is going to run you $800 - $1,000) if not more. Of course you can find lower prices in less desireable parts of town, but let's assume you'd like to live in a decent area. Bills, fixed expenses, gas, unplanned events take up another $1,000 at least. If you're making $60K You've got prob $1,300 left over for food entertainment. Just gettin by
investmjr 9 months ago
@investmjr There are: Indianapolis, Phoenix, Nashville, Kansas City, Charlotte, Austin, Dallas, Houston. Shall I keep going???? There are exciting cities in the United States where you can live in a world-class environment and not have to pay sky-high prices to live there. Oh, AND you CAN live in a nice part of town. I lived in Phoenix, Arizona (going to relocate back soon) and found a nice place for less than 600 a month. Was in a nice neighborhood AND had a view of Camelback Mountain.
ThePumpin1 9 months ago
@investmjr Also, Phoenix is a big city (sixth-largest) and you don't have to sacrifice your first-born to survive. Maybe some people need to learn to live within their means. You don't have to have the biggest home, car or fanciest neighborhood to survive. Living somewhere that is clean, affordable, with good neighbors and services is good enough for me.

L.A. is not soooo bad, really it isn't. Don't move here just to do it.
sadetwizelve 1 year ago

Is living outside of L.A more affordable and realistic for two or three young guys?
WEBUILTTHISHOUSE 1 year ago
@WEBUILTTHISHOUSE Splitting the rent is always helpful. Not killing each other as you share space under the same roof is even more helpful.
Seriously, though, if you can commute in and out of the parts of L.A. where you'll need to be, and you can find housing that's less expensive, it's a smart way to go.
OhCurt 1 year ago
@WEBUILTTHISHOUSE West LA is expensive. The Valley is more reasonable but with gas prices so high now you have to think twice. LA is a rough town to make it. In NY it is expensive but you earn more money. Not so in LA. You will earn maybe 25% more than in Indianapolis but the cost of living is double. I lived there from 2000-2001 when it was booming. Those days are gone, the city is plagued by high unemployment and depressed economy. Sad when you think about what once was.

@WEBUILTTHISHOUSE It's really a shame. 30 yrs ago it was the promised land. no longer.

For what it's worth, you're not alone in this sentiment. The caveat is that there are a lot of cool people who have moved into the area who I'm glad to know. Hopefully this is true for you as well.

How u doin my man, i might be moving out there soon, how much for a decent 2 br apt would u say, are jobs hard 2 come by, and how bad would the air/smog be for a brother with asthma?
ipunchniggasntheface 1 year ago
Los angeles is so diverse compared to any other city, its crazy but in a good way hah. I live in san diego and when i go out to LA every couple months everything just seems different, such as the lifestyle and all. LA is an amazing city, i just think you have to plan a lot before considering moving there.
randomism 1 year ago
I would love to live there but my boyfriend worked there on the railroad for about a month and he said he hated it there. He said too much bumper to bumper traffic too crowded too expensive. He also said guys out there said you have to watch where you go there and you have to work two jobs to survive and houses are very expensive even in bad areas.

I love L.A.
To me, it is the best place because EVERYTHING is here including warm weather.
I am a native New Yorker by the way.

I would have to take three buses to get to the LA subway (which is clean but inefficient).

why do los angeles ca have so many homeless people
blackisrealites85 1 year ago
@blackisrealites85 Impossible for me to give you a fitting answer in just a text comment. A lot of the homeless out here are veterans and mentally ill people who used to receive more government support but who were left hanging during Reagan's presidency. Also, a lot of homeless people migrate toward this coast because of the warmer climate.

Can't wait to leave Texas and make LA my home =)

Hey like others have said MAKE ANOTHER VIDEO LIKE THIS!!!!
me and some friends are moving down next one maybe show us things to expect when we get there.
BigHeadsHooKah 1 year ago
@BigHeadsHooKah Still trying to pump coffee through my system to wake up, and unfortunately there are no plans for a follow up video right now. But off the top of my head, I can tell you that the closer you live to your job the better. And if you do have to take any of the freeways in your daily commute, I-405 is the one to avoid (it's basically a parking lot during rush hour).
Good luck with your move!

I really want to go and study in LA :( I'm just bored of England and I feel like I need a change.
keepitcoolx 1 year ago
@keepitcoolx LA and all of Southern California is a beautiful and diverse place, but the video is right that it is also crowded and expensive. And there are hundreds of colleges and universities to attend for study. But it's not easy to live here and to get around. You must own a car.

i'm moving to los angeles. i lived there until i was 5 but moved to other parts of the country. i thought about moving to nyc but i always viewed los angeles as my home town. i hope people don't treat me as a transplant. i am not an aspiring actor or anything annoying like that. i just love l.a. i'm 22 and feel like i'm wasting my youth in shitty smaller cities. so my question is, am i a transplant? i lived in l.a from 6 months old to 5 years old
sexlessparents 1 year ago
@sexlessparents Mine's a similar story, actually. I was born here but spent 12 years of my life in Illinois. I've always referred to myself as a "Native Transplant" - it occasionally confuses people, which adds to the fun.
;-)
Good luck with your move!
OhCurt 1 year ago
Damn, at least in LA you have a beautiful beach and Californian landscapes are great. But everywhere I search I read that living in LA is not easy. I wish I'll move there for a short time just to try it.

Dude, please make another video about this!
dodoheard 1 year ago
@dodoheard You're the first person to ask this. Most people tell me to go fuck myself because they can't handle any of what we said here. LOL
Anyway, that might be doable. What else specifically are you curious about?
OhCurt 1 year ago
@OhCurt Well first off, I agree whole-heartedly with just about everything you've said in this video. Los Angeles is an expensive, dynamic, cold hearted bitch.
Which is why people stay.
I'm not too sure about what I'd like to see.
I lived in L.A for about 8 years of my life. So I know exactly what you're talk about.
Maybe you could do street interviews with people that you've touched basis with. Have them give their honest opinion (like this guy) about what they think this city is about.
dodoheard 1 year ago
@dodoheard 8 years is a long stretch - or can be, depending on the shape of those years.
This really is something I'd like to revisit at some point, so thank you for the suggestion. Until the various reactions began piling up here, I really had no idea this was any kind of hot button topic at all.

60 thousand a year huh. i'm already in my thirthies and i'm at a point where i'm considering working at a coffee shop while i try acting full time. L.A. has always been the ultimate place id want to live but uh.. when i can afford it. which by the looks of how my life is going --that will probably be never. but just for the weather..i rather be poor in california than poor in the cold winters of montreal.
foxpawz 1 year ago
I agree with you guys. LA is a hell of a town. I don't live there but I have been there 30plus times. Im a actor, I have had auditions out there, filmed a few things out there. I also have alot of friends that live there that are actors and work in other parts of film. I live in Phoenix and just drive back and fourth cause I get a audition every other month and its cheaper to live here and drive back and fourth. To me LA seems like this if you have money its fantasic. If you don't it sucks!
smiley0407 1 year ago
@smiley0407 It's cheaper for you to commute like that? Amazing (but I shouldn't be surprised).
Yeah, it most definitely can suck if you're not in a high income bracket. I think for myself, the closest thing to a right answer (perhaps THE right answer) is to just stick around in the Long Beach area. It's part of L.A. county but without a lot of the hassels and expenses.
Good luck with your career! (or "break a leg" if that's still preferred)
:-)
OhCurt 1 year ago
im an aspring rapper/ producer but im broke as hell, wish i could move out there, how much money u need a month to stay in long beach would u say?
cantfuckwithmeprods 1 year ago

But thanks for this video anyways, gives me new perspective to this whole thing and to living in LA in general.

hey gtta question
im mexican, wich u may hate or not
i do have a visa and stuff, tho i live in mexico
im currently a college student, so im not a lack of society
anyway, i live in monterrey, one of the main cities in my country
right now the situation sucks, thers a drug war going on covered by media and i wanna move asap
LA is my main option
im a musician, i know its hard to make it in la, but i live in mexico, here is not even an option, so that makes no diference
what do u think i should do?
wezos 1 year ago
@wezos Advice - that's dangerous stuff, but since you asked...
Follow your gut instinct. If you're in an unsafe situation and have the means and opportunity to improve/change that, why not go for it. As for the musician thing, hell yeah it's tough to make a career of that, but there are also several directions you can take that if you have the talent, skill, determination, and - most importantly - the connections.
Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

Los Angeles is a wonderful place to visit but I lived there for a year from 2000-2001 and the high cost of low living wears on you after a while. The illegal alien sunami has made matters worse.

California is a shit hole.
Pent5HT 1 year ago
@Pent5HT Actually, it's not.
OhCurt 1 year ago
@Pent5HT It's not that California, or L.A is a shit hole. It's just that it's not for everyone. Just like how New York isn't for everyone. You have to be the right type of person for L.A.
CoutureBabeh 1 year ago
My advice: Move to Los Angeles and try living here for 2 years. If nothing big has really happened for you during that time, then it's best to leave. I've been here for 6 years now and it's easy to get stuck here (drained finances, complacency, laziness, etc.)

@trisharose87 Sounds like you two will be just fine, yeah.
And there's no such thing as "right" or "wrong" in terms of reasons for moving to SoCal, just practical versus ill-advised... and it's all subjective, even with the harsh realities taken into consideration.
Good luck with your move! :-)
